The Ascension of Balthazar

I just got the Ascension of Balthazar CD from BL ;) (still waiting for Dark Vendeance boxed set and book to arrive :( )

Have not listened to it yet - will do later tonight - but there is a thing that interested me and would like to share:

There was a small pin in the wrap with the stylised Eye of Horus as made for the FW HH series and is depicted in FW fron page in red (see here). Now why would they put this in a DA product, UNLESS the first book of the series covers the First Legion? :D

More later...

(still waiting for Dark Vendeance boxed set ... to arrive :( )

Me too. I'm starting to get worried considering it was dispatched a week ago (29th Aug). I'm really hoping it arrives tomorrow or Fri - i don't want to have to contact customer services to say it hasn't come and be informed that they're out of the Limited Edition sets :s.

On a lighter note, i'm looking forward to this audio drama - mroe stuff to listen to while i paint. I'd like to be painting Dark Angels, but until that set arrives i'll be working on my Ultras.

Or they just wanted to promo it?

Yeah, they're in every Black Library and Forge World order, recently.

I guess I'm just seeing what I'm hoping to be true... :D

A few things about Balthazar's acension - MASSIVE SPOILERS:

The story is about the DAs receiving a phychic signal that lures them to an Ecclesiachy planet in search for a notorious Fallen (is there any other kind?). Once there the DAs realise the planet is deserted but soon discover that the population is mass slaughtered and the bodies gathered in the several Cathedrals of the planet. The DAs find the Fallen that is already captured in a warp-prison suspended above tons of corpses. Once the Fallen is released from his prison and is escorted to the DA Thunderhawk to be transferred to the Rock, a massive attack of Chaos cultists attempt to prevent them. This attack is orchistrated by the Crimson Slaughter warband from which we do not get much info other than they know of the DA secret. In the end, and after a costly encounter with a Helbrute the DAs make it off the planet with the captured Fallen but leave a lot of bad blood - obviously to carry on in the Dark Vengeance book...

- I still did not find the time to listen to it but read the script. It is included in a second CD that contains some wallpaper versions of the cover art (pretty cool btw). It also contains some artwork that apart from the cover art is pretty basic (think Kadillus basic). I think it looked out of place in what is supposed to be a premium product...

- The story is solid - it has to do with the first encounter between the DAs and the Crimson Slaughter. It precedes the Dark Vengeance, it's a prelude to it.

- Balthazar is the Sergeant of a DW squad and earmarked for Captaincy when a position becomes available. In battle he carries twin Lightning Claws and Cyclone Missile Launcher.

- The commanding officer of the DAs is Master Zadakiel - Master of 5th Company.

- The astropath that receives the psychic message that kicks off the story is promptly executed by Zadakiel in a cold and emotionless manner since she was exposed to knowledge she shouldn't have!

- There is a new Fallen - Attias the Untamed that was apparently by the side of Luther when fighting the loyal DAs.

- The new Fallen appears to be a decent chap and although he had escaped the DAs three times before - two of which it was a close call... there is no description of any atrocities or other actions that will give us more reason to like or hate him... In fact he wants to fight alongside the DAs against the Crimson Slaughter but he's not allowed by the DAs (rightly so ;)). He does however score a shot on the Helbrute at a crucial point.

- The Crimson Slaughter appears to know about the DA secret although how they got to learn about it is not mentioned.

- We are shown the Helbrute in action. It's very well done showing its raw strength, singlemindedness but also clumsiness of the thing.

- It mentions a Heavenfall Blade called Fellbane carried by Zadakiel, the Fifth Company Master.

Overall the story is fine - I bet when I listen to it I'll like it even better.

It should serve it's purpose at least - with the Dark Vengeance novella, you are just plopped right down into the thick of it. Good to know that this will give you some information to why the DA are after the Crimson Slaughter in the first place.

I don't recall mention of the Slaughter knowing about the Fallen in Dark Vengeance - perhaps I missed it. Given they know, it makes sense why the DA would see to their eradication. I was starting to wonder why they would have a starter set and supporting materials that pits DA vs. Chaos Marines AND not have the Fallen involved. Though while reading DV, the other side of me was happy that the DA might just be doing this for simpler reasons - like protecting the Imperium and avenging the deaths of their comrades... but of course there is always another reason too.
