Spray Sealer question

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this has been asked before, but my search didn't turn up any results that answered my question. I just finished spray sealing one of my Thunderwolf Calvary, and for some reason the spray didn't dry clear. I'm wondering, is there's some way I can strip off that sealant and respray it?

Thank you in advance.

We just talked about this not more than two weeks ago and now I can't find the thread. Some one posted a link to a very helpful article about this. Let me see if I can remember the high points.

First, dip the model in water. Does the cloudiness go away when it is wet? (and it probably will since this is the most common problem) If so then you can fix it by giving it a coat of a clear varnish sealer to smooth the surface and then reapply the matte sealer the next day.

If it is still cloudy even when wet there is no cure. You could try using a little alcohol and rubbing at the bad spots but the only real solution is to strip and repaint.

Some of the causes of this are:

Not shaking the paint enough

Holding the can too far away

Holding the can too close

Heavy coats when spraying

Thanks for the tips and the link, I'll give it a go with the water tonight when I get home from work.

@Jacinda - If I need to strip the model, would I use Simple Green like I see some people using to remove paint or is there something else I should try for removing the sealer?

Simple Green works and it is the most commonly recommended solution because it is widely available and it will not harm the model. I use a purple degreaser that is sold under a few different names (Purple Power is one of them) but it can be hard to find. It is also costs 80% less than Simple Green so it worth the effort to find if you ever decide to repaint an entire army. For a one time boo-boo fix, just use Simple Green.

On a freshly painted model -- like within the past few weeks -- the paint will soften up after 2 hours of soaking and come right off with a gentle scrubbing with an old toothbrush. Older models may take over night or up to 48 hours of soaking.

Stripping models is a common topic here. You will probably get a ton of advice soon.

:P

I have had mishaps with the spray on sealer before. After trying to salvage it from the cloudy mist look. I stripped all the models. To this day I just use the paint on varnish to models. Saves me the time and worry about the spray on. May take a little more time, but to me well worth it. Just make sure not to allow it to glob in areas, try to get a smooth even coat over your models. Then when it drys you can add a little more to where the model will be commonly picked up during game play to give it a little extra rub off protection.
