Stripping, Dettol versus Fairy power Spray UK

I have put in UK as I am not sure if Fairy power spray is sold in other countries?. This may be of interest to some people, I have been advised to use Dettol and Fairy power spray, some people say one is better then the other so thought I would put it to the test.

I did use dettol the other day, results for metal was brillant, plastic not so good.

Link to blog here, will be updated Friday night with results

I for one will be interested to see the head to head results, I have only used fairy powerspray in the past to avoid stinking out my flat.

One comment about your blog do far, you don't need to use a bath of the powerspray. Just spray the mini so you use less fairy than Dettol. I don't have the link at the moment as I am at work, but there is a video on YouTube showing this. I'll post a link after I get home tonight.

I use a good heavy spraycoating with the mini on a sealed plastic container. I them left it 2 of 3 days, giving it another spray every now and again as I like to fiddle rather than just leave stuff.

This gave decent results on a plastic plague lord and is a lot cheaper than using a full bath of powerspray!

If the paint is really thick you might want a second application after scrubbing off as much paint as you can from the first go

Edit - Added link, and liking your blog

For metal thinners is the best. For plastic SIMPLEGREEN. I can't recommend this product highly enough, it is simply brillient (and green). DO NOT use it on resin models as it will soften the resin. It won't melt it but it softens it substantially.

I have used dettol and not only will it strip paint but does a good job on skin too. (it stains the plastic too) Use dettol for hobby knife cuts, leave the stripping to simple green.

I've always used nail polish remover on metals and neat dettol on plastics. Although I did find that dettol if left for too long softens some of the details on plastics. Nothing major but you lose some of the nicer definition if you let it sit.

I'm currently testing dettol multi surface spray which is working out nicely. It's apple scented so I don't stink out my house and it doesn't harm your skin like neat dettol can. It also strips paint neater. With dettol I found that the paint turned into a gloopy stringy mess. With the spray it seems to just break down into flakes. It means I don't have to spend an hour with a tooth pick cleaning out each model.

I'm currently soaking miniatures in a small cup with just enough spray in to cover the mini. The next day I give it a scrub with a toothbrush and it lifts off most of the paint. Rinse and repeat.

I've only tested it on metals though. I haven't had cause to test it on a plastic or resin yet. One thing I will note though is that it does discolour metal. Initially it makes lead very shiny then the spray evaporates off and exposes the metal to air it goes a dark metal grey. White metal seemed to just go dark grey straight away. It's nothing bad, it actually looks pretty cool, but it's worth mentioning in case any one tries this stuff.
