6th ed Wolf Lord

Recommended Posts

In 5th ed I ran a GK terminator list, a BA Nipplewing and a SW drop pod loganwing. The GK's remain unchanged and the BA need a major overhaul so my eye has turned to my wolves. I've decided that I won't use special characters in my 6th ed wolves and instead create my own company. I'm at a loss for the Wolf Lord.

looking at the rules for THs it now seems you can match them with a wolf claw and get an additional attack. So you have a hammer for the tough stuff and a wolf claw for eberything else, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this set-up?

Depends what you want him to do really, whether its combat monster, damage boost in a squad or mobile terror. Personally, my wolf lord are seeing some shelf life this edition with RPs and WPs being superior choices. But assuming you really want him, lets go through some options.

Overall I like the TH storm sheild combo. Youre a literal tank but you lose out on that I5. Otherwise, frost blades. Storm sheilds are good, with that 3+ invul.

Mobile terror: Thunderwolf, and your prefferred weapon setup. Runs around the board destroying things and not dying.

Support: Go cheap and cheerful on foot or in a transport. Backs up your squads with shedloads of attacks.

Combat monster: got the full hog, pay the points for him and stick him on a bike in a bloodclaws squad. Frost blade or thunder hammer and your LC or a pistol.

Remember you can allocate your wounds when you hit on a 6. And you have Look Out Sir saves.

I would consider giving him a Lightning Claw and Powerfist, but Im really just not sure Id ever want to give him a thunderhammer- the extra points arent as worthwhile in my opinion, since hell be striking last in that case.... but the extra attack, AP options and Str vs Rerolls gives good tactical options and you give up little when coupled with the belt of russ, poiunts aside.

On the other hand... a Powermace coupled with a Frostblade could be alot of fun. The mace to drop problem targets to I1 and the Frostblade to eat through MEQ like the tasty candy they are.

I like the Wolf Claw/Chainfist. Mount the dude on a wolf, give him two wolf buddies and some TWC, then laugh your ass off. Saga of the wolf or whatever makes wolves I5 as an option.

Chainfist is for TDA only, so you cannot "mount the dude on a wolf."

I hated TWC with a passon in 5th, felt they where not really fluffy enough. Lately I've been changing my mind and am veering slightly towards a TWC pack in my army.

If I ever get my conversions, of what I feel TWC should be, done, then I will run some. But from what I am hearing, I might go with a few more then I thought....

Hey, do you guys have any tips or advice for fielding a Runic Armored, footslogging Wolf Lord?

Or at least, one not mounted on Thunderwolf, Bike, and without Terminator Armor?

Keep it secret. Keep it safe.

Nothing says free VP like a 120+ pt melee-oriented HQ unit that can't reach melee until atleast turn two.

^ this! Or if you can put him in a transport that "might" stay alive to get him to combat.

And I would say BoR or storm shield. I have thought about a massive point sink before in: Wolf Lord (RA, BoR, WTN, SotWB, PP or BP, and FW), Wolf Priest (BP or PP, RA, WTN), Rune Priest(BP, RW, RA, WTN) Wolf Guard Battle Leader (RA, PP, FW, WTN) with 10 wolf guard with a bunch of storm shields and a Land Raider Crusader. Over 1250 points in all, but with the new rules I don't think it would ever work except in Apoc, which is what I was planning it for.

yeah I'm thinking a Rhino or a Razorback.

Probably a Rhino hah

Having yet to read the new rules 100%, I still think that rhinos and other light transports will still have a place. I know that GDUBs is pushing fliers as the new big thing, but I plan to fight as Russ intended, with both feet on the ground. I mean, I am sure their greedy little minds wont let the transport be forgotten. So I plan to use transports still. It will come down to my opponent having to choose the "bigger" Target, and hoping it wasn't my distraction target.

Last edition, I tended to go one of two ways:

A) Put him with TDA WG in a LR

or

:) Put him with the GH in a Rhino.

I have been thinking about doing the Rhino thing again, but having a Razorback or two to have my opponent "guess" the bigger threat. Well them or my longfangs.

Wouldn't that be predictable, tho? :P

The one hugging the edge of the board is the Long Fang, the one spearheading into the enemy like a kamikaze is the Wolf Lord?

Unless you mixed them up and the Wolf Lord is angrily jogging back to the melee frontline from where the Razorback dropped him off haha

I always keep my opponent guessing.

I used to do two rhinos and a LR. Sometimes he was in the LR some times in a Rhino. Now with the Razorbacks, might have a Assault Cannon Razorback and a rhino in a list and maybe switch back and forth from time to time.

Has anyone tried a "cheap" Thunderlord in running a TWM, 2xPP, and MAYBE RA or BoR?

Because of the change in rules for movement it seems much more likely that a Thunderlord can actually shoot now, and with the sniper rules and the fact that he'll still have rending in CC seems very diverse and cheaper than your standard monster TWL. Maybe a budget hitter that might surprise some people...

The new rules for special ccw aside, I absolutely refuse to give my wolf lord anything that reduces his initiative. As one of two non-special characters in the whole codex with I5, I feel it is a waste.

I used to feel the same way, but 6th ed has been changing my mind. It's very common to have your super-killing IC have to accept a challenge from some gimpy dude, so they only end up killing one guy. With the change to Power Weapons 2+ armor is the way to go, especially on heavy-hitter units and killy Characters, so even if you do have your Lord duke it out with another IC, the opponent will be rolling the 2+ save since all the AP2 weapons are also Unwieldly.

After my Thunderlord with FB got tied up with St. Celestine for 3 Turns going *tink tink* against her 2+ armor, I switched to giving him a Thunder Hammer.

Still cracks the 200 pt margin...

I just love thunderwolf lord, 2x claws, runic and belt.

Chuck fist on a thunder wolf regular and it's a solid unit. Let the lord rip up regulars at normal int.

You should swap the second claw for hammer or fist as you will get the extra attack and choice of weapon.
