While the initial excitement of seeing this counteracts the disappointment of having Dark Vengeance on indefinite hold I read along and what did my sad eyes behold

"This pack contains Space Marine Sternguard Veteran Weapons - a finely detailed resin cast kit that comes in eight components. "

Upon further viewing all the little flaws in the resin start sticking out, weird angles on barrels, the bending and air pockets. I hate to say this but another GW product with potential that has failed.

Well, I'd only be interested in the heavy weapons anyway (which hardly makes it a purchase worthwhile) - the combi-weapons look a bit... pants (looking at you combi-plasma and combi-flamer) and the lightning claws are a mere recast (I already have the metal versions).

Why on earth would you stick your combi weapon on top of your main barrel? That will seriously mess with your aim. Those sculpts look ugly and impractical.

And would you look at those claws? Could they not straighten them out for their promotional photo which is meant to be there to sell this product to us?

Those look like garbage.

There are 2 things that have my attention, the Heavy Flamer and the Combi-Flamer, other than that yes I must agree with the assessment of PANTS!!

a power armor heavy flamer can be easily made from the teriminator heavy flamer bit. seriously.

i havent tried a combi flamer, but will poke around.

and this release looks like garbage

At first I was like "OOH! they said combi, maybe I will get some".... then I saw it and was like "EPIC GW FAIL!!!' Which seems to be their current trend.

EDIT: As a fantasy player, I took a look there too. I have to say that GW did just kill the Bretonnians too. $41 for one Lord???? $124 for the Grail Knights????? Yup GW needs to stop.

EDIT 2: I just noticed that my GW page was set to New Zealand, so the prices aren't Americana, but seeing as the prices did go up it is still crazy for a little played army.

What the hell kinda product is that?

I know I have a blood feud against finecast, but that aside, even if this was metal, look at those claws and the sculpt.

That's pretty half-assed for Citadel Miniatures.

Don't buy it.

I wouldn't use those if they were given to me free of charge...

Those look like some of the crap we see from independent, out of the garage, internet, fly by night, modeling "companies".....geez GW what an epic fail....

Hah! And even some of those are better, I reckon. Just look at Chapterhouse and Puppetwars.

Wonder who's gonna be the dumb sucker that buys that Sterngard weapons pack! :P

Wonder who the dumb sucker that is gonna lose his job for even approving them to paint and post pics of those "train wrecks" up on the GW website in the firstplace. LOL

~BtW

and yeah you're right about CH and PW being way better than that crap...

Seriously bad press to paint up DEFECTIVE product GW.

The HF looks warped and those LC blades are soooo bent they could've taken 2 minutes to straighten them.

To go from the awesomeness of the DV sculpts to this pile of plague bearers leavings is just... I'm lost for words.

Indeed. The contrast makes this so... unbelievable. Or shocking. The Chaos models in the DV box are hands down the best snap-fit models I have ever had the pleasure to lay eyes on. This Sternguard kit is 'meh' at best. Such a pity.

Wow lots of resin here and I just don't get it. Frankly the Lightning Claws are simply recast pewter sculpts, I doubt the ones in the pictures are actually finecast, they look like pictures of the original claws sold as part of the MK 1 Veterans. As for the weapons, they're ok. Not the best but interesting enough, I particularly like the Heavy Bolter and if your not good at conversion the Heavy Flamer could be particularly useful. All told it is a nice little kit for customizing Sternguard and adding some different models of combi-weapons for a little difference here and there.

Sure the prices have gone up but... so what? They have always done that, the pewter isn't and wasn't a whole lot cheaper and some products have actually gone down in Finecast, such as the Wraithguard. Not to mention I've found Finecast to be far more durable than traditional plastic, easy to work with and extremely light. It doesn't chip as much as pewter, weigh as much and it is far easier to cut, sculpt, drill and convert. When given the choice of more options for conversions or less you guys really want less? It is particularly disappointing to see so many negative comments thrown around.

I first saw this kit detailed in this month's White Dwarf and frankly the pieces look fine. If you don't like them, don't buy them.

As for Fantasy yes some of the kits like Grail Knights, Blood Knights and certain characters have gotten shockingly expensive, Azhag the Slaughterer tops out at a whopping $90. However Fantasy has also seen a ton of great plastic character kits such as the Savage Orc Big Boss, the Wight King, Captain of the Empire and so forth that are extremely detailed and fantastic kits, and to top it off are cheaper than traditional pewter or finecast character models. I was very happy to see these models come along and I've been looking forward to seeing 40k get similar models and at last we have, Interrogator-Chaplain Seraphicus is of the same design and is hopefully just the first of many such character models to come.

All told I really see no reason for such negativity and pessimism. :(

Rabble Rabble Rabble anger. Screw it, I wouldn't go out and buy them, but I could make use of them, they'd just take a little cleaning up.

Back to the OP though, to clarify, Dark Vengeance wasn't totally delayed, just the standard edition box, since GW hasn't gone through all the limited editions.

The negativity and pessimism is because they honestly look like crap. I would hope it's just the ones they happened to have on hand and it was to late too get another set before they needed to be posted up. Although that doesn't explain the poor designs. They very well could be some old pewter ones recast, but they could have done resculpts and it would have been better to be honest. I would have loved to have an alternative to the FW combi weps as they are pricey but there is just no comparison between the two. So yeah, unless I see a better set then I certainly will not be buying these.

GW has done many awesome models and new sculpts lately, including the models in the DV set, nobody is really disputing that. I am hoping that the new chaos goodies that are rumoured are going to be just as good, but if they post pics of the product that look as poor as the sterngaurd weps look.....smh

Just not a smart move on GW's part. It's like advertising "Hey! Come check out our brand new car!" with a picture of a rusty dented jalopy....

@Nrthstar I went to order a Limited edition last weekend and couldn't because it said they WERE sold out and no longer available....... Odd... and to be honest, if they weren't sold out I'll be quite pissed off!

All told I really see no reason for such negativity and pessimism. -_-

Oy, neither pessimism or negativity from me, my friend!

I just say it as I see it. If it looks like crap, I say it looks like crap. If the price looks expensive, I say it's expensive.

You like flaccid weapons for your marines, you go buy the flaccid weapons for your marines. If you paint it and post it asking for C&C and it still looks like that, I say you f***ed up!

I am as my Space Wolves are: no bulls**t. :P

Such a weird thing. Well the official statement put out to stores only affects the standard edition, and my friends were able to get their limited edition boxes. What does it mean?? If GW doesn't have any limiteds left, than why aren't they selling the standard??

Either way, my buddy brought his Chosen test model into work today. For a snapfit, it's pretty sick, and I got a little excited to get to see my wolves DECIMATE chaos once again!

On a tangent's tangent,

Hey ever thinking they're gonna make us Wolves the poster boy for a starter set in the future?

Kinda hope not, but I wouldn't mind having some limited Space Wolves plastics before they go OOP when another starter set comes out haha

But anyways, excuse the OT

One of my ideas for a combi-flamer. Guy on the far right. (Sorry I don't have better pictures but I saw your comment and decided to give you ideas)

That was online, as there are no FLGS nearer than 2 hours away and no GW stores nearer than 4.....

So.....

I just can't trust that small little pieces like these will be straight and not riddled with holes and major imperfections. I would love to use most of these bits, but wont strictly based on horrible previous experiences with 'Fine'cast.
