Returning to 40k, Vs Necrons

Hi all.

The last game of 40k I played was 2nd edition so it has been some time. A friend at work has decided (for the second time) that he wants to play which got me started again. We will be playing at first 500 points then moving up. At first I had assumed we would be playing purely for the fun of it, even when he said he was going to play necrons, but then he asked me what army I was going to play and I asked why he said so he could build his army to beat mine. This obviously changed the focus very quickly.

I know so far he has bought a lord, a box of warriors, immortals, praetorians and wraiths but do not know what he will actually field in the 500 points.

I have been looking at a 500 point list I saw on here I think it was actually made of rune priest, 2x5 grey hunters with plasma, then either 2x 5 longfangs with missile launchers or 1x5 missile long fangs and 1x6 heavy bolter longfangs.

Any help by anyone with more experience (so anyone then) on what sort of tricks I might see in such a low point necron force would be appreciated and even more so any ideas on beating them to show how the idea of mine of just fun lists and games was so much better than his must win plan.

Well, the general guideline is atleast 1 (mostly) full pack of Hunters for every 500 pts, so you're at a good start. Also, RPs are great for small points games as they're great for laying down lots of aoe type dmg which can devastate small armies.

 

Without knowing your playstyle, can't truly recommend what purchases to make.

 

My practical knowledge of Necrons is limited. Avoid melee with wraiths and the army in general has a short range of fire, right? So keeping them at a distance and using your RP's living lightning and a retinue of missile launchers will rain havoc.

Thanks for the reply already! :) In truth i don't have a playstyle as such, having not played in so very long. The last games i have been playing have been malifaux and i pretty much like trying everything, movement, ranged, melee, doesn't matter i like to try it all.

Model wise for me what to get if anything was better choice than those I posted, really it is open to any choices whatsoever. Though i haven't played in a long time when apocalypse came out i bought the marine battle company, have bought two space wolf battleforces, numerous different terminator boxes, another about 250 marines worth of assault marine boxes, tactical marine boxes, space wolf boxes plus various dreadnoughts and tanks, all of which are unmade and ready for any combination required.
