GabrielTolken
BEFORE YOU READ ON- THE PLANET'S NAME IS PRONOUNCED AV-ON not A-VON (A-VON being the makeup brand/company) (not meant to be a fluff legion, just something for my amusement. Love it or Hate it) Yes, I am aware that custom legions are bad in fluff, but the point of those is to create them. So i created one. Sons of Avon Primarch When Chaos sent the young primarchs across the galaxy, Carmine came to rest on the planet Avon. Avon was a planet much like Terra, with a huge mountainous region to the Far East, while the rest of Avon was a deep valley, which had once been covered by an ocean. The terrible warp storms of the Age of Strife and the emergence of the Eye of Terror, warped the surface of Avon. Carmine came to rest only a few miles from the capital of The Kingdom of Avon. A young trader found carmine. The trader took him as a son. The trader named him Carmine. Carmine grew quickly, and the trader called it a blessing from the heavens. Carmine was happy. He traveled with the trader to places all across the tiny Empire. (Tiny compared to the Imperium) The king of the sole empire on Avon was a cruel person. He drove most people to killing themselves or fleeing into the far regions of Avon. This king routinely raided small villages as a show of power. One day, one of these raids came to the small village where carmine and the trader lived. The king’s troops slaughtered the town’s people and the trader, then left. Carmine could not believe what had happened. He fled the reach of the Kingdom, to the far reaches of the black mountains. Meeting Titus Avon had a custom. This custom dictated that when a child was born, a certain constellation could be seen. The most common was that of a rabbit or other small animal. Some children were born under the sign on the stag, which was an honor on Avon. Titus Varius was born under the sign of the stag, and thus was treated as though he were a god. He was brought before the king and quickly inducted into his ranks of soldiers. His armor was silver, with a white and gold cape sporting the sign of the stag. When he came to be 24 years of age, he was ordered to put down a riot by killing the entire crowd with burning oil. Titus refused, so he was imprisoned. He managed to escape, due to the high honor with witch he was held amongst the soldiers. He traveled to the Black Mountains, where he became lost. As he came upon the border between the Kingdom and Naderine, one of the remaining factions, a band of raiders ambushed him. They carried ancient guns and swords with teeth. They killed his steed, then the leader put a gun to his head. But before he pulled the trigger, the man’s arm was lopped off. Titus looked up to see a tall and powerful man slaughtered the bandits, and then turned to Titus. Instead of killing him, the man let him go free. Titus and the stranger talked for a short while, and then went on, together. Carmine and Titus became brothers that day. Uniting the Splinter Factions Many nations still held ground, but the kingdom was pressing harder than ever. Carmine, wanting revenge for the death of his “father”, united the splintered factions into a huge army. He did this buy preaching of unity, of doing away with the ancient custom of birth signs dividing the people of Avon. With Titus’ help, he achieved this. Carmine’s forces were outnumbered almost 10 to 1, but he was confident. He and his army engaged the Kings troops several times, winning most battles. He would have heavily armored foot solders charge into the enemy forces while archers picked them off from high ground. Then heavy Calvary would ride down the mountain into the enemy forces, causing them to scatter. The mountain regions of the rebel stronghold were impenetrable. As his fame grew, so did his recruits. He soon had enough soldiers to fight the Kingdom of Avon in a full battle, with no ambushes or trickery. His army marched north, capturing towns and forts, on the way to victory. Coming Of the Emperor While Carmine lead half of his army across the massive peninsula separating the Black Mountains from the low lands of the Kingdom, Titus lead the other half across the frozen north of the planet. The quick advance was halted at the city of Gorbane. A massive trench line was made outside the city. Inside the trench, were troops carrying powder firearms. Due to this, Titus’ advance was halted. Carmine realized it would take the entire army to finish the job. He abandoned the peninsula, leaving a few regiments, and marched north. When he arrived, Titus told him of the situation. Quickly put his units into position, then told Titus to do as he did. At midnight, Carmine called his forces to war. Thousands of soldiers in full green and white paint charged into the sleeping Kingsmen. The trench was quickly overrun, leaving most units scattering into the night or retreating into the city. Without any proper defense now, Carmine and his army easily defeated the remaining Kingsmen. In honor of Carmine’s glorious victory, a massive feast was held. Carmine and his forces gathered outside the city at massive tables with lavish foods and drinks. As they all sat, a stranger approached Carmine. He wore tattered robes, but towered above the other men. Carmine stood, as did Titus. Carmine asked who the stranger was, but he did not answer. Titus began to draw his sword, but Carmine stopped him. Carmine stood into the hooded man’s eyes. After several moments, Carmine bent down on his knee and pledge his loyalty to this stranger. The man removed his hood, and revealed himself as the Emperor of mankind. The Emperor then Explained to everyone at the feast that Carmine was a Primarch, a super human general and genetic father to a legion of soldiers like him, the Xl legion. Legion Xl Many of Carmine’s soldiers feared what might happen if he left with his legion. But he assured them that he would see this war to the end. So he took control of the 11th legion, at the time named the warlords for their superb battle tactics. He and the warlords deployed to take Avon for the Imperium of Man alongside Carmine’s army of knights. Backed by the Carmine’s army (often joked to be Knights of Carmine) The Astartes marched forward. Within a matter of days, the warlords and Carmine’s knights stood on the outskirts of Al’ruk, capital of the Kingdom. Carmine devised a plan to take the city with as little losses as possible. The astartes would move forward, taking the walls. Then, Carmine’s knights would move in and clear the city. While his knights did this, Carmine, Titus, and a few astartes would assault the main keep. After only a few minutes after the battle began, the Warlords had captured the walls. Carmine and Titus lead the knights into the city, where they met the senior Astartes of the warlords. Together, they fought their way to the throne room of the keep. There, Carmine found a horrid and foul scene. The king, a shriveled man sitting in a gold throne, surrounded by bodies, each placed purposely in a scene that looked somewhat like a court. Each body had their jaws pushed up in a never ending smile, while their eyelids where sewn open in a never ending stare. The king was partially consumed by a pink vapor surrounding his body. His body was covered in cuts and scars, with a strange symbol carved into his exposed chest. Carmine grabbed the king, and brought his sword up. The king laughed, and said that he would enjoy his death. Carmine indulged him by sliding his sword into the king’s gut, then throwing his body through a nearby window. With that, Avon was free. Sons of Avon/Crusade During the great crusade Carmine commanded his legion, and the 9th expeditionary fleet. Being united with his father and 2 of his known brothers, Carmine’s legion gained many honors on its own. By the end of the great crusade, a good many star systems had been brought to compliance by the Sons of Avon. Heresy Upon Horus’ corruption by Chaos, he sent Carmine to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, but tremors in the warp slowed him down, allowing him to easily turn back to pursue his brother. On his way, he was harassed by countless attacks on his fleet by traitors within the Imperial Navy. Despite all the troubles, the Sons of Avon where able to reach Isstvan. They arrived too late to support his brothers, so he and his legion made their way to Terra. Only hours away from Terra, the Sons of Avon flag ship, Pride of Terra, came under attack. Warp beasts raided the ship, killing many astartes. Thousands of chaos demons swarmed the bridge, where Carmine and Titus held them off, along with a handful of Astartes. After a few moments of fighting, a large demon rammed through the bridge defenses and challenged Carmine. Carmine fought with the beast, eventually taking off the creature’s legs. Before he brought his sword down to behead the thing, Carmine head it speak. It told him that he hoped this death would be better than the last. Carmine’s eyes widened, then his sword came down. The creature’s head rolled across the floor. Within minutes, the attack was repelled. The Sons of Avon where back on course, but they could only hope they weren’t too late. When they arrived, Carmine found the attackers scattering, but he refused to chase them. Carmine traveled to the palace to meet with his brothers. He met with his brothers and learned of the battle. He was horrified at the thought of his brother Sanguinius dead and the Emperor mortally wounded. He left for Avon, realizing that the Imperium needed to keep the traitor legions bottled up in the Eye of Terror. But across a span of 10 years, Avon was cut off from the rest of the Imperium by an attack made by one of the many splintered traitor warbands. Orks were attracted by the conflict in the weakened Imperium, which put an even larger drain on the Sons of Avon. During the final battle against both forces outside the Black Mountains region on Avon, Carmine discovered the he had inherited some of his father’s psyker powers. He used these to his advantage by unleashing massive psychic attacks on the warband, eventually driving them back. By the end of this 10 year period of pain and suffering, this once grand legion was reduced to just about 5,000 marines. Carmine then received word of the Codex Astartes. He called Titus and his 2nd captain Avitus to him. He told Titus to take 2,000 marines under his command. He told Titus to place them on Lune (Avon’s orbiting moon.) He then told Avitus to send 1,000 marines to the Black Mountains on Avon, and establish a fortress Monastery there. He would be given 1,000 marines to be called the Avonian Crusaders. Titus’ chapter would become the Lost Sons, and Carmine would retain command of the Sons of Avon. New Age Carmine gave his sons explicit orders. Titus was to use his chapter for defense of major worlds, while the Avonian Crusaders would guard the space around the Eye of Terror. The Sons of Avon began to operate within the Segmentum Obscurus, working as a general space marine chapter. He looked head to the future, but it was dark, and grim. Caging a Demon Sometime in the 34th millennium, Avon was attacked by several war bands, with traitors wearing the colors of the Emperors Children leading them. They made a quick drop to the surface, then left. All of them. What they left was a horror that would decimate the Sons of Avon and their successors if left unchecked. The demon Carmine encountered on his way to Terra was unleashed upon Avon. It took the combined efforts of all three of Carmine’s chapters to stop the best, but it was too powerful to be killed outright, it would just return again. The Sons of Avon tricked the powerful demon into attacking the Black Mountains, which had a natural psychic buffer so powerful, that it had almost completely hidden Carmine from the Emperor. With the beast cornered in the mountains, they trapped it in a massive cage, which was lowered deep into the many thousands of underground catacombs created by Carmine’s chapters. At the center, Carmine ordered that a large vault be built. Inside was a chair, connected by cables, tubes, and wires to the demons cage. Carmine used all his psychic might to close the cage. He then ordered the massive vault doors be closed, so that the demon would remain caged as long as he could hold it. To this day, Carmine’s sons have no idea whether he is alive or dead, but they pray that he is. Heresy Over the course of 5 millennia after Carmine was locked away to protect his home, Avon would remain in its state of disrepair. Before the attack on Avon, massive hive cities spread across the land. After the demon’s attack, Avon was left much the way it was before the Emperor arrived, Feudal tribes which look to the superior godlike Astartes for their protection, ever year sending their greatest warriors to withstand the rigorous tests to become an Astartes. The only sign of technology on the planet are the Astartes, and their massive fortress spreading across the black mountains and on the surface of Lune. Hexullus Dynamicus had grown through the ranks after leaving his tribe’s village to become an Astartes. After becoming Chapter Master of the Sons of Avon, Hexullus went through trial after trial in his service to the Emperor, which began to wear his mind down. During a deployment against the forces of Chaos (Thousand Son’s to be exact), he finally met his limits. He succumbed to chaos, and turned half of his own chapter, and a third of his 2 successor chapters to chaos. On the final evening of the fight, the Thousand Son’s attacked the chapel which had served as the command post for the Son of Avon. During the attack, Hexullus and his traitors charged forth into the loyalist line which he had strategically placed in between the two traitor forces. Loyalist forces held out, despite being outnumbered 10 to 1. The lead Thousand Sons sorcerer was killed, and the traitors retreated, allowing the loyalists to flee to orbit. Hexullus and his traitors had brought most of the Avon PDF into their circle of traitors as well, so upon their return, the Sons of Avon and their loyalist brothers had to continue the fight which further ravaged Avon. After a few weeks, the traitor forces escaped to join Hexullus as they fled to the Eye of Terror. After seeing the Astartes failure to control the local PDF, and their own Astartes, the citizens of Avon rose up against the weakened chapters. For more than 2 years, the planet suffered a constant campaign of genocide. At the end of the 2 year period, the population was reduced to barely 86,000 people, most of which were women or elder men. With only 200 Sons of Avon, 323 Lost Sons, and only 78 Avonian Crusaders, and a very small recruiting pool, the future of the chapters looked bleak. Despite this, they survived. They rebuilt Avon and their chapters. After 3 centuries, all 3 chapters, their fleets, and Avon itself were restored. 41st Millennium The Sons of Avon and their successors still fight on, along with the rest of the Imperium, against the enemies of man despite every obstacle in their path. As Titus Varius first called out before he died defending his ship in the Warp against a raid by chaos demons-for Avon! For Carmine! For the Emperor of Man! Dominicus
I can see that you've worked extremely hard on this, but I have to say that this IA cannot really ever be. The reason is that the Second and Eleventh Legions are left out as removed from Imperial Records, even BEFORE the Horus Heresy. They did not participate in the Great Crusade (to our knowledge). However, the premise of the IA is good, if you take Carmine and turn him into an Astartes that is part of a delegation from a Chapter that has been sent to raise a new Chapter, as per orders from the High Lords of Terra. That's just my suggestion. However, no matter what, using the Eleventh Legion is out of the question; it's a big no-no in 40K fluff, and you might bring about the ire of many board members, so I suggest that you change this. - Dom Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260894-sons-of-avon/#findComment-3176041 Share on other sites
Olis
Did anyone else think of Blake's Seven when they saw the titile? :P I would have to agree with Dominicus, for much the same reasons. Might I suggest perusing the IA guide I've got linked in my sig, for some pointers? :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260894-sons-of-avon/#findComment-3176048 Share on other sites

First started out as a blood angels successor chapter. Obviously its changed a lot. I decided to make it my own legion, mainly because I can decide on chapter rules, history, and customs. Not meant as a fluff chapter, but rather just for my own amusement. I decided to put it up on the B&A just for others to read and to love/hate. Again, thanks. Stigus Adeptus
I thought the whole reason those legions were left blank was for this exact thing. And canon in 40k is a tenuous thing, so I see no reason this couldn't be within his own canon. Hell, I have less problems with this than some things GW has written. What kind of tactics do they follow? Also, is the breakdown after the heresy just for show, do the Sons of Avon basically have control or sway over their successors? Thanks, The Sons of Avon and their successor, the Lost Sons, are primarily codex compliant. As for the crusaders, you could say they work like the Black Crusaders, since that's where i got my inspiration for that chapter. I'm still working on them though, so i don't have much about them. The Sons of Avon, in secret, are considered to be the living image of Carmine, and therefore have the ability to command their successors as they please.
