How common are human Pariahs?

Recommended Posts

So heres a question then,

- rogue psykers, the ~10%, are taken on the Black Ship....most of the psykers on the black ship say 9.9% are fed to the emperor right?

- the remaining .1% become Inquisitors, etc......right?

- so if the Imperium can obviously spot psykers, and we know at least Eisenhorn can spot "nulls" and used the extensively. Is he the only one that uses them? Im sure that hes not the only one to figure out the advantage of using a "distaff."

- I wonder if "nulls/pariahs" are collected just like psykers? although Eisenhorn does mention when he first meets Bequin that they exist in the galaxy as untouchables that simply live pretty miserable lives.

Iirc, it might have been stated somewhere (or it might not and I'm making this up), that the pariah gene appears every one in a billion humans. That might sound tiny but considering how many psychics are in 40k (and how many billions of humans are in each sector, let alone the Imperium), I'd wager it easier than many people think to find one...

This was similar to what I was thinking. The big issue is the ability to identify nulls. There is a bunch of stuff out there about how pariahs are hated by those around them, but no clear way of identifying them. I would say that there has to be some collecting of nulls due to the Culexus? assassins the question is how.

Pariahs are extremely rare and hard to find. Theres no real number on them, but if you knew where to look, and how to find them, then you would be able to do so.

That said, if they make up even less than 1% of the entire human population, that is still a considerable number of them, possibly even millions.

Its the needle in the haystack problem.

Pyskers kick off energy. Measurable, detectable and testable.

Nulls are nothing. Literally without a soul. The Empire cares nothing for a individual- how can that find the odd person, the hated?

Eisenhorn literally stumbled over his first; and she, working for hundreds of years in sector barely found 100. With the cooperation of the =I=

Figure out how many subsectors there are in the Imperium. Figure 1 null per three years at best per subsector. That should give you an idea of the results of a sustained recruiting drive.

In that case, 1 Null in 1 subsector every 3 years is still ~33 Pariahs in a century. That is both a lot and only a few at once. I would estimate that only about 50% (max) of that number, extrapolated over the entire Imperium, is alive at once.

And some food for thought.

"...perhaps one per planet per generation have this gene. They don't tend to live long as the feelings of hatred and distaste they generate means they have few friends and many enemies. They are often used, if they can be found, by the Inquisition and the Ordo Hereticus in the fight against the witch and psyker."

According to www.lexicanum.com:

They are often used, if they can be found, by the Inquisition and the Ordo Hereticus in the fight against the witch and psyker. Also, due to their soullessness, they are completely fearless.

Basically, very rare, and it sounds like they typically die young.
