.Torch.
Like many of the members on the board I've been hard at work painting up the figures in the new 6th Edition starter box. However, not being too familiar with the new washes I was a tad overzealous and now have a thin sheen that makes the armour a bit glossy for my liking. Is there an effective way to matt the armour again? Or will I have to strip the paint and start again? Thanks, Torch Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260921-fixing-glossy-armour/ Share on other sites

.Torch.
Thanks for the fast replies, will the matt varnish dry clear? Or do I need to mix it with anything? I also can't find it on the GW site. :S EDIT: Found it! S.k.i.t.t.l.e
I've got the Vallejo Matt Varnish, haven't tried it yet, but heard good things about it. I got a big bottle for about the same price as GW regular sized paints... (If you're in the UK, Maelstrom Games are good to buy from) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260921-fixing-glossy-armour/#findComment-3174713 Share on other sites
Jacinda
Some of the hardware store spray matt coatings will yellow with time so try to avoid those. Purity Seal from GW will not yellow but it is a bugger to work with and it will ruin a few models until you get the hang of using it. Brush on matt varnish can be found anywhere that sells artist paints; I like Windsor & Newton's Galeria Matt Varnish. 75mm cost about a dollar more GW's 12mm pot paint and will easily cover an entire army, vehicles and all. [ETA] And yes, the matt varnishes will dry clear. Nothing to add but a little water if it gets too thick. .Torch.
And yes, the matt varnishes will dry clear. Nothing to add but a little water if it gets too thick. I was just wondering whether or not the clarity was dependent on the quality. I'll mess around with a few, if I muck it up its just a good excuse to buy another DV box right? :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260921-fixing-glossy-armour/#findComment-3175184 Share on other sites
Azatoth
If you use spray varnish, make sure to give the bottle a good and extended shaking. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260921-fixing-glossy-armour/#findComment-3175361 Share on other sites
Red Fury
I would suggest finishing all your models with a matte spray varnish to help protect them. It makes the paint jobs a lot tougher and will keep your hard work looking good. The best Matte spray out there is probably Testors Dull Coat: http://www.thewarstore.com/product33266.html Another good one is Armory, it's cheaper for a large can so if you have a lot to spray (like vehicles and terrain) you may want to save the testors for your minis : http://www.thewarstore.com/product33266.html Once you are done with the matte spray, go back and use a gloss varnish on things like weapon optics, jewels, or whatever else you want really shiny and not dulled down : http://www.thewarstore.com/product43297.html Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260921-fixing-glossy-armour/#findComment-3180234 Share on other sites
