Hannibal.Lictor
Last night I fielded these guys for the first time. I was loling the whole time. After a long time of 2 up armies, having a horde of pissed off canines was kind of liberating. I ran them with Canis, and they ate 2 units of screamers and the last of the flamers (knew I was going to loose some pups on that charge). They finally met their doom to the hands, or should I say claws, of the fiends. Not sure what to do with those things; way better than our TWC. On a side note CD is one hell of an army. Those new flamers are ridiculous. Anhow, not sure if I'll run Canis again. His lack of inv save really hurt. I think a thunderlord with SotW would be better. Just wanted to say I had great success with these guys last night even though I lost. I couldnt killthe fate weaver, got him to one wound, same on the thirster and plague DP (flying). Prob would have pulled off a win if the fiends had shown up a round later. Those things are the suck. RipherChost
I have yet to face Demons but I can imagine there are plenty of players taking advantage of having several flyers. I can't imagine using Canis in a game smaller than apocolypse the points feel better spent on a GH pack. I am glad to hear your success with Fen Wolves I started re-basing mine from rectangles to the circle bases the new ones come with in anticipation of using a pack of them in the near future. Do you think the Fen Wolves would be as effective on their own? Perhaps on their own Fen Wolves would need to be used differently, like a mobile screen/sheild then counter attack? Hannibal.Lictor
Ya Canis was a one time eal to see how he would do. If you are going to run wolves, it really helps to have them at I5. I think my unit is 120 points and they ate almost 400 points of demons. Had to dump the screamers, I run a Loganwing and that ap2 stuff is lame. I used them as a screen/distraction for my Lone wolves and WG to take up position. Worked really well. I could also see just charging that IG blob and hoping for the best. Tekik
I love my Fenrisian wolf packs. I usualy run two units of 10. They have two main functions as far as I have found. The first one is they make a really good support charge backing up a unit of Grey Hunters my opponents will either throw their attacks into the wolves hoping for kills to win the combat, which then leaves the Grey Hunters untouched; or they attack the Grey Hunters and I just got a free 30 attacks. Its a win win. (the thing is charge with grey hunters first since they have a save) Option two is providing cover for units marching across the battle field. Each turn they are shooting my wolves my Grey Hunters arent getting shot, and if they choose to just ignore the wolves they they take a pack of angry doggies to the face. :P That is just how I have found they work for me though. Hannibal.Lictor
I lik,e mine with Saga of the Wolfkin. Makes them I5 and thats usually enough to bury most units befoer I need to worry about hits. They, as you stated, make a great screening force. People jhave a real hard time not popping some fire power into the 6 up saves. If you are running 2 units, spend the extra 15 points on SotW. Good for laughs. Brom MKIV
I'm considering trying a unit or 2 but I'm wondering how long they survive for you guys? 30 wolves is a hefty cash and modeling investment which is the main reason I wanna be sure ill be satisfied. Also have you found any cheaper alternative models? Edit- also any downsides youve noticed to joining a TWC lord or similar to the unit? Hannibal.Lictor
Hopefully your local area will let you "counts as" a few games to play test them. Dont expect to have alot of dogs at the end of the game. They are a first 3 turns kinda unit, anything past that is a bonus. Brom MKIV
Pretty much what I suspected, still thinking they might perform better than twc though simply due to allied blob units and plasma spam, plus the changes to FC and fleeting. No one likes having a 45 attack strike first squad hauling ass at them even if its only worth peanuts. Funny thing is even elite cc killers like death company must respect their potential especially with an uber thunderlord in tow. Edit- fixed a mistake on HoR (finally got the rulebook in and read it cover to cover..heh) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260938-doggies/#findComment-3175858 Share on other sites
Hannibal.Lictor
I used to ne a BA player, and a ten man DC unit is 200 points just for the dudes. You need either a reclisiarch or chaplin with them to make them uber, so a minimum of 300. Most people are spending close to 400 on that unit. Fen Wolves cost me 120 for my unit of 13, one is a cyberwolf. You can have two of those units, just make sure you have Saga of the WOlf, I would charge a full DC squad with my wolves. The chap/rec is gonna take out a few wolves but they will get their attacks. You will pretty much gut that unit or any other. Plus people love to shoot dogs, dont know why. Give them a shot in a few friendly games, I am still playtesting mine and have a bunch of genestealers posing as wolves. Brom MKIV
Funny you mention stealers because nids is exactly what I picture when I think of this unit. Ive never even seen fen wolves hit the table so far but theyre close enough to nid swarms to tell me they can be a real pain for cheap which is what I want. I think ill order some now, thanks for the info. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260938-doggies/#findComment-3176129 Share on other sites
