Mogsam
So I was gifted some of the new starter set terminators and decidedthat I'd have a crack at them. Naturally i've gone too far and i'm now considering doing an entire small army to go with my guard. After much deliberation I chose the Scythes of the Emperor - The scheme is lovely and I saw someone do a fantastic army that sparked my interest. Plus I have a Tyranid force that I can have them oppose! Anyway, here's the test figure! http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_20120908_153339.jpg http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll277/mogsam_moogle/IMG_20120908_153348.jpg Thoughts? Also, if you can guess what the table is a picture of then you win nerd points! :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260969-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/ Share on other sites
.Torch.
Looks really good, he just needs a few Battle brothers. Not sure about the DA iconography? Who are the Scythes founded from? Also, song fire and ice mat? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260969-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/#findComment-3175195 Share on other sites
tvih
Not sure about the DA iconography? Who are the Scythes founded from? They're an Ultramarines successor... so the DA bits are a bit of an inaccuracy there, to say the least. Paintjob's nice enough though! Brother Cambrius
They're an Ultramarines successor... so the DA bits are a bit of an inaccuracy there, to say the least. They can easily be explain to be honour sigils the terminators hold after battling alongside the Dark Angels Chapter or one of its successors, so it can show a little bit more character and depth in the history of each miniature's battles. Really smooth and clean paint scheme! I imagine you'll be using lots of 'Nid bits you have to help add trophies and base terrain features? Mogsam
They might be a Ultramarines one. It's only suspected though! They could be anyone potentially - part of the reason I chose them. Still, they might have recovered some Dark Angel successor gear on a Tyranid ship? Being so poor and near utter destruction they can't be choosey afterall! I know I can't afford to be picky! It'll only be on the Terminators since they came from the new kit. Most of it's been carved off. Unfortunately he'd need a major resculpt on this particular guy since it's built into his shoulder. Alternatively as Cambrius suggests they could have fought alongside a DA successor and earnt lots of respect! I'll most likely use quite a bit of scaring on the models to represent the claws and put some damage on their bases/tyranid bits. The army is inspired by the story about the Lamenters where they drop pod in and get massacred after a heroic defence. I love that image that they heroically decend and then fight desperately for the guard to move forward. And yes my desk is wrapped in a Song of Fire and Ice/Game of Thrones map vinyl cover. Thank you very much for the nice comments about the painting! Grimm Blade
Great work on this guy! I was just recently inspired to start a Scythes of the Emperor force also. I was reading a lot about them and as stated above the DA are easily explained IMHO. The Scythes are not above scavenging armour from hive ships the board in search of their lost Brothers. Also, DAs are well know for their Space Hulk missions, as such it is not unreasonable to think as others have mentioned that the Scythes have fought alongside the DA in a Hulk mission. A great start, I am looking forward to seeing more! Adeptus-Alaska
that guy is cold blooded cool. also don't forget that DA iconography frequently includes scythes........so yeah, rock on with that. failing that it's your hobby, do what you want. Mogsam
Quick Update! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8309/7988341715_9f7e80b18f.jpg A second terminator to go with Brother yet to be named. I'm going to redo their decals after finding the library with the Scythes decals in! I have printers that can make waterslides anyway. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8446/7988347794_82d48aff7c.jpg The first marine of my combat squad. I bought 5 guys yonks ago so i'll paint all of those up and see where it takes me! At the moment they are going to be allies for my guard army with the idea being that my massed ranks of guardsmen form the bulk then these guys teleport/drop pod down to attack them on their own objectives and such. I'm thinking this. Captain - Terminator Armor, Combi Melta 145 5 Terminators Chainfist, Assault Cannon - 235 10 Marines - Power Fist, Meltagun, Multi Melta Drop Pod 235 I've made two thematic decisions. - No one is going to be unhelmeted. As Caiphus Cain points out about the Sisters of Battle - It makes no sense to wander around without your ludicrously strong helmet in a warzone. Secondly I've shorn off all the Imperial Eagles. I like the idea that they are penitent about being so neglectful that they are in such a poor state as a chapter. To lose so many battle brothers is a crime to the Emperor and they must remove the sign of his affection until they are again worthy. The Yak
Great start mate. I love the Scythes. Such a cool scheme and story to them. I agree that the Scythes will use what ever gear they can get their hands on as needs must. Nice Yellow you got going too. More please :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260969-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/#findComment-3177254 Share on other sites
Colonel_ Logan
Very nice Scythes, I like your background too, so many different ones to interpret one chapter Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260969-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/#findComment-3177468 Share on other sites
Brother Cambrius
Really really nice work thus far Brother! I love the idea of the Aquilas being shorn off of their armour out of shame, really gives them a nice depth of character. The yellow is amazingly smooth too. Can't wait to see the full squad when it is done. Mogsam
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8300/8001297474_56e114b8bc.jpg Sorry for the poor lighting but it's somewhat midnightish so it's a bit dark for photos! I'll do some better ones when I get a chance! Is the orange terribly out of place? Some guys at Warhammer - Empire where I frequent quite frequently were suggesting that it could use some red to break up some of the black on a few models. So I did the sergents helmet orange. Near miss! Keith - I love painting things silly colours. My guard are bright orange. Camoflage are for pansies! It's just the foundation yellow and then washed red, washed grey-phone then put back up to foundation. Finally golden yellow + white for the edges. I've been thinking about the beginnings of fluff and i'm in not careful they'll probably all have backstories. There's only 16! sockwithaticket
Nice! I always feel that swords are fairly generic pieces of heraldry and ones like the little ones left on your guys can be used almost as medals to denote martial prowess and battle honours. Mogsam
Thanks! Here's a better picture of orange helmet himself. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8453/8006347517_a6a4585532.jpg Here are some images of the first finished combat squad. 4 with bolters and one with something I've yet to decide. Is it a melta or a flamer? Looks like a bit of a flamer with the guns end but it's built from a bolter! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8173/8006350438_b588f7ce0e.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8181/8006351272_4986ce5f26.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8036/8006351067_e4f9929355.jpg I think the reason I really like this army so far is the pure speed that they can be made and decently so. There's no skintones and such and with black and yellow it's just a very fast scheme to paint! Mogsam
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8302/8012121794_292e24ab56.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8318/8012114871_3bdb288595.jpg Quick post of my full tactical squad. All they need now is a drop pod and they're done! Thoughts on the orange helmet? http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8461/8012120503_9ca73c9451.jpg 80% of my terminators are now finished too. Will be moving on to a character to lead this allied contingent next. Might buy some terminator bits off ebay to make a unique one! Simiarly I am also looking at getting several large scout units to represent their novice intake that would be particularly high. Does anyone have any good scout replacement heads? I don't think they'd let them wander around unhelmeted after losing 80% of the chapter.. Midnightmare
Cool Chapter, cool scheme. The Orange looks well imo, although I would maybe use a fancier helmet on future Sergeants as its brightness against the rest of the squads immediatly draws the eye, may as well draw it to something fancy! (I know they have limited rescourse, but its just from a purely aesthetic pov) Good work ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/260969-scythes-of-the-emperor-blog/#findComment-3183230 Share on other sites
Mogsam
I really like the look of some of the older helmets but they are harder to get hold of without an expensive kit. If I was doing this with alot of resources then i'd go get pre heresy armour (or their cheaper ebay equivelent for "steam knights") So far this entire army has cost me £8 this year. I had a box of 5 marines from somewhen ago and the terminators were a gift from a friend. Bought a box of 5 combat marines using a trade in system at the local dvd shop to get them down to half price. If you notice the flamer is made from a guard flamer on the end of a bolter and the sergants arm is a converted guard commander arm. That said... I accidently won 10 scouts on ebay for £7 yesterday. So there will be some scouts with weapons I wouldn't have given them in the post. I assume bolt pistols and chainswords are second rate as opposed to more bolters. BoogeyMan^
Very nice army you've got there, Scythe-brother :) Good thing about the chapter as you can easily pull the backstory on the globe (as we say here in Ukraine) and say that they're Angels successors. Not much official info on Scythes anyway. Personally, I'm thinking about that since new codex is on the way and I'm really liking DA, too. Keep it up.
