Horses (useful names for Rhinos and Razorbacks) Alsvider: One of the horses that pulled the chariot which conveyed the moon Alsvin: One of the horses that pulled the chariot which conveyed the sun Arvakr: One of the horses that pulled the chariot which conveyed the sun Blodughofi: Frey’s horse Greyfell: Sigurd’s Horse Gull-top: Heimdall’s horse Gullfaxi: The giant Hrungnir’s horse, eventually a gift by Thor to his son Magni. Hofvarpnir: The horse of the goddess Gna. Hrimfaxi: The horse of Nott Skinfaxi: The horse pulling the chariot of Dag Sleipnir: The eight legged horse of Odin Svadilfare: The sire of Sleipnir and helped put the walls around Asgard. Items Andvaranaut: the ring of the dwarf Andvari Boden: One of the bowls in which the dwarfs Fialar and Galar drained the blood of the murdered god Kvasir Brisingamen: The necklace forged by the dwarfs Alfrigg, Berling, Dvalin and Grerr. Freya wanted the necklace and agreed to sleep with the dwarfs in return for it. Draupnir: A gold ring which belonged to Odin. Every ninth night it produced eight identical rings. Droma: The second chain fashioned by the gods to bind Fenris Eldhrimnir: The cauldron in Valhalla in which the great boar Saehrimnir was cooked each day. Gambantein: Hermod’s magical wand Gelgia: End of the chain that finaly bound Fenris Giallar-Horn: Heimdall’s horn Gioll: The rock to which the gods bound Fenris Gleipnir: The third chain used to try and bind Fenris Hlidskialf: The high throne from which Odin could see all over the nine worlds Laeding: The first chain used in the attempt to bind Fenris. Megingfiord: The belt of Thor Weapons Angurvadel: The magic sword of Viking Balmung: The sword of Sigmund Gungnir: A magical spear made by the dwarf Dvalin on loki’s request to placate Thor and Sif Miming: A sword made by Volund for his son Heime Svalin: a shield which protected the earth from the worst of the sun’s rays. Tyrfing: A dwarf-forged sword belonging to Angantyr Ships (useful names for starships and thunderhawks) Ellida: The magical dragonship given to Viking by the god Aegir Mannigfual: A ship owned by the giants that was so large that a children sent to climb the mast where old men by the time they returned. Ringhorn; The ship upon which the god Balder and his wife Nanna where cremated. Skidbladnir: A magical ship built for Loki by the dwarfs Dvalin to placate Thor and Sif Beasts Audhumla: The sacred cow that sustained Ymir and revealed Buri Dain: One of the four stags dwelling on Yggdrasil Duneyr: One of the four stags dwelling on Yggdrasil Durathor: One of the four stags dwelling on Yggdrasil Dvalin; One of the four stags dwelling on Yggdrasil (shares the name with a dwarf) Fafnir: A dwarf, cursed by Loki, turned into a Dragon Garm: A dog chained in the cave of Gnipa at the gates of Hel. Gullinbursti: A great boar made by the dwarfs Brock and Sindri, eventually owned by Frey Gullinkambri: A cock living in Valhalla, awakens the Einherjar to battle each day and will herald the dawn of Ragnarok. Hati: One of the wolves that pursued the sun and moon across the sky, just before ragnarok it will catch and consume the moon. Skoll: One of the wolves that pursued the sun and moon across the sky, just before ragnarok it will catch and consume the sun. Heidrun: The goat in Valhalla that produced an endless supply of mead for the Einherjar. Himinbrioter: A huge ox owned by the giant Hymnir. Thor killed it and used it’s head as fishbait. Managarm: A wolfwho was the child of Iarnsaxa, fathered by Fenris. Ratatosk: A squirrel that travelled between the top and bottom of Yggdrasil to convey the insults of the eagle at the top and the dragon at the bottom to each other. Nidhug: A dragon who chewed the corpses of evil-doers and gnawed upon the roots of Yggdrasil Selected Norse heroes (and sometimes villains) Agnar: A norse king who mistreated Odin when he visited the Jarl in disguise. Askr: the first man Belldegg: A son of Odin who became a king of west Saxony. Ermenrich: King of Gothland, married the Vakyrie Swanhild. Frithiof: A Nordic hero, son of Thorsten and Ingeborg Gunnar: Married the Valkyrie Brunhild through his mother’s sorcery Jarl: Progenitor of the race of warriors Karl: Progenitor of the race of peasants Thrall: progenitor of the race of slaves Lif: the man who will survive Ragnarok and with the woman Lifthrasir will recreate the human race. Ottar: A hero who, with the help of Freya, won a legal dispute with Angantyr Randwer: Falsely accused of sleeping with Swanhild and condemned to death Saeming: a son of Odin who became a king.
