Retributis
So , I finally succumbed to getting back into the hobby and split the DV box with a friend. I'm doing a custom chapter (IA is in the Liber) called The Penitent Sons. So, here is my first model in... 14? years! http://imageshack.us/a/img818/7747/img0878ay.jpg The chest eagle is going to be grey, the backpack is currently black and the bolter is red (I'm aiming for a dark red). Any comments are gratefully received - and hopefully there will be a more to follow! Urauloth
That's looking good, but unless you told me different I'd assume it was an Angel of Absolution. Retributis
Aye this has been pointed out to me before :) I'm hoping that by adding a few bits and fluffier pieces I'll be able to differentiate them! The finished model with have a lot more scripture written on it (if I can find a way to do it that I'm happy with) and purity seals etc. One idea I was toying with was perhaps doing a black faceplate for the helm rather than all bone. Do you think this would help? EDIT: In the meantime - here are some more pics: http://imageshack.us/a/img443/4646/img0879jh.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img62/7140/img0880t.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img96/4392/img0881v.jpg I know the chapter symbol looks a bit crappy but it will eventually look like this http://imageshack.us/a/img210/1810/penitentsonschapterstyl.jpg For the rest of the army (beyond the DV box) I think I will look at making a transfer or something with less Dark Angely wings - I'm sure I can think of a fluff excuse as to why theirs is stylised so (I've already had to figure out reasons to explain the prevelence of the swords/winged sword icons, a lot of them I just can't get rid of without having to redo entire pads of details!) Kierdale
Looks good so far. Nice colour! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3176300 Share on other sites
Retributis
So would that feel less AoA? It's an idea I toyed with before but I didn't want to be too heavy handed with the fluff symbolism. Killax
Cool work, I like it like this, only advice I can give is give the skull another colour to make it pop up more. Red would be perfect! CyderPirate
The colour scheme looks great! Nice work on de-dark angeling the shoulder pad. Plans for the bases? Retributis
I bought urban basing kit so I've got a bunch of slate bits and some resin and brass extra, going for a wartorn city theme I think. Might look at trying to simulate concrete dust on their feet/lower legs but not sure how I'd approach it. Urauloth
One idea I was toying with was perhaps doing a black faceplate for the helm rather than all bone. Do you think this would help? Yeah a black faceplate will make a huge difference, imo. Retributis
http://imageshack.us/a/img826/3007/g105243.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img845/8404/g105245.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img15/4655/g105246.jpg Think that's it for the moment. I'm going to do all the basing at once I think. I'm allowing myself one terminator for every 2 marines I do, and every 5 marines I get to do a character (yay!) though I'm waiting on some bits to convert the librarian and chaplain (Chappy is becoming a captain!). As always, crits are welcome! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3177447 Share on other sites
Rider-75
Looking good. For personal taste, I like to do my "soft" armour joint in a dark metallic to provide contrast to the main armour. But wah to their own. I like what you did with the moulded chapter icon o create your own. Clever. Retributis
I might look at doing that, or at least giving them a nice dark wash with some nuln oil, but I didn't want to break the bone up too much and I don't think it's too beyond the imperium to have coloured rubber/plastics :P It's funny because the chapter symbol sort of made itself, when I was scraping off the swords the area where the hilt was ended up forming sort of eye socket shapes with the wings so it was perfect :) I'm not too happy with the coverage I got on the symbol, I did water down the paints but they still seem a bit thick and not very smooth :/ I'm going to try and add some shading/highlights to the symbol to make it a bit better/less simple looking. ToyShip
I really like what you've got going on. The chapter symbol and color scheme really work, and its nice to see some Dark Vengeance Marine conversions. Looking forward to the characters and such. Gonna have a look at your IA and see if i cant give you some advice. Retributis
So... when I said I was done with the above guy... I may have been lying ¬_¬ http://imageshack.us/a/img268/6467/img0885qt.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img4/4527/img0886ic.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img696/8554/img0887pd.jpg Gradually just tweeking bits here and there. It's never going to be golden demon standard but I'm so inspired by all the great stuff I see on this forum that I want to try my best! One thing I'm slightly stumped by is that my paint doesn't seem to go on very smooth... I water it down but I live in quite a heavy water area (lots of limescale, damn bathroom...) so would this effect it? Maybe I should try running the water through the Brita filter first? It's also making small details quite tricky as the paint just doesn't want to come off the brush sometimes. Also how much paint should I load onto my brush each time? Sorry for the amount of questions! :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3178418 Share on other sites

Retributis
Bits have arrived ^_^ Pictures to come after the glue has dried of my awful attempt to make a left-hand grip nemesis halberd :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3179109 Share on other sites
Retributis
Right, first up my newly promoted Chapl- I mean Captain, with his shiny new sword: http://imageshack.us/a/img196/5935/img0893ta.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img837/7382/img0896ze.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img641/6756/img0897p.jpg And the slightly more complicated Librarian arm swap - I had to use a bolt pistol arm, carefully butchered, to create the hand holding the halberd and then lots of filing and chopping to get the angle correct. It's ended up a bit messy but I also got hold of some purity seals with which I hope to mask the worst of it. I may also try and finally use some green stuff! http://imageshack.us/a/img713/4686/img0891cu.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img443/319/img0892x.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img267/904/img0894pa.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img839/8614/img0895a.jpg Both are only blue tacked for the moment for ease of painting :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3179320 Share on other sites

WingsOfTheFalcon
Looking good, will be keeping an eye on this project! Out of interest, what colours are you using for the bone effect? I'd recommend using Lahmian medium instead of water to thin your paints if you're having problems with the water quality in your area. Retributis
I'm using Seraphim Sepia over a white basecoat, then layering on Ushabti bone, then another wash of seraphim, more layering of ushabti and then white highlights with a seraphim "glaze" to finish it off. I'm thinking of skipping the first seraphim wash step on my next one and seeing how it looks. Retributis
So, I've pretty much finished my 2nd tactical marine (who is the clone brother of my first one... yay for variety :P) and so I may have cheated a bit an started on a termi... I had lots of ushabti bone and I didn't want to waste it! :P http://imageshack.us/a/img7/2231/img09011.jpg Unfortunately the light was a bit lower than for the other pictures so it's a bit bleached but you can see what I was going for ^_^ Really happy with how the colour scheme adapts actually. I went for a black chainfist (and powerfists will be too) because I've always liked that look on IF Termies and I consider it a little knod to my chapter's gene sires ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3181612 Share on other sites
Retributis
Update on the termi - Thinking of changing the colour of the scabbard for the waist dagger but not sure what to. My first time doing hazard stripes as well and I think they've come out pretty well :turned: http://imageshack.us/a/img805/2105/img0905mf.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3185627 Share on other sites
WingsOfTheFalcon
Great start! I'd suggest either straight Silver, or a dark grey for the scabbard. Nice work on the hazard stripes, very '90s! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3185757 Share on other sites
Retributis
Small update, Almost finished the termie! (Damn friends inviting me out and using up my painting time!) http://imageshack.us/a/img836/3619/img0913ce.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img834/7234/img0914jl.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img845/6351/img0915b.jpg Still need to do some little details and finish the chapter badge. Once I've got all the models done to a reasonable level I'll back to them and neaten up some areas and do little bits like highlights on the metals and lenses etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261037-the-penitent-sons-infancy/#findComment-3206035 Share on other sites
