The crusade so far

Hey crusaders, it's been a while since I posted any pics so I wanted to put some stuff up. Most of this is oldish as I've been focusing on painting up terrain pieces, though the termies and the vindicators are somewhat new. I've been working on this army since I started 40k so you're going to notice everything from mediocre pieces to things I'm fairly proud of ^_^ . The going's been slow so I'm hoping to get inspired and back into it. These were taken at night so the colors are a little bit off and aren't popping quite as much as they do in person... oh well. Anyways, hope you like them!

Here's the army shot. Still some work to be done, and I have another land speeder and sword brethren waiting to be assembled.

Land Raider Crusader... done except for the weaponry. I took the time on this one and I like the way it turned out.

There does seem to be an odd sheen to the army. At a glance I'd say it's the result of a wash, judging by the color of the parchment/cloth on the models.

Pretty good all around. The highlights are very sharp and crisp (on those pics close enough to see them) and the scripture work in particular is dead on. Little bits like the detailed banners and painted-on candles are a nice touch, too. Though I would recommend an anti-shine sealer, and the mud work on teh Vindi's dozer blades could use a bit of evening out. As is the effect has a very sponge-painted look, but a muted and dull tone of deep brown underneath would probably help. THink of mud on a boot: there won't be much of the shoe's color showing through any of the mud (like the black is on the vindis) but some spots will definitely be clumpier and maybe a different shade than the rest. Weathering powder would work great for this if you have any.

Very nice looking crusade you have there. I am especially enamored with your vindicators. I really like what you did with their siege shields. There are times when I really wish lightning clawed termies were nastier than they are, but then I balance that with being greatful that termies are back to being brutal.

You're doing an excellent job on your crusade.

Cheers,

Indeed this is a fine Crusade, my comments reflect that of Firepower, there does seem to be quite a sheen to them all, and the scripture is great. Like Honda I really like the paint work on the Vindicators, crusade badges, the candle art. Been thinking of doing some art work on my tanks but when painting I never remember.

Thanks for the comments guys. Some good feedback too!

About that sheen: tvih is on the money with that being varnish. I have to pack my whole army and travel to play games, and over the years I've had a few experiences with paint chipping off or just fading over time. that's supposed to be matte varnish, but it does come out looking a bit shiny. Any tips on a good varnish, or just ways to protect your army from wear and tear?

When you're traveling and packing your models, do you use foam? Mine are always in foam and I've not noticed any chipping.
