A new brother joins the fray (Army WIP)

Was unsure where there was a "hey guys, I'm new here" thread should go, and as I'm branded for life with the Dark Angels, I figured this might be a decent place.http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g31/Angel_CMSS/Meh/Picture343.jpg

and, I also have my crux.

as for my army, it currently sits like this...

Yes, my terminator sergeant doesn't have a head currently. I'm not a fan of anyone being helmet-less if i can do something about it. Of course i cut the head out before I realized that the head was part of the front.

As you might be able to tell, the majority of this army is re purposed from the AoBR set, while a few I found stashed away in a closet. Back during 3rd ed, I had encountered a foul beast on Terra known only as a "long term girlfriend" and during one of our more heated and passionate encounters, my original force was traded for a simple ring. a short while ago, the one ring was returned to me, and I began my reclamation and repentance for wavering in the face of the Lion and the Emperor. Having returned after such a long sojourn I find what I used to know to be the gospel and his divine word is now heresy and bile. (most shocking was that you can pre-measure)

Using the 4th ed book my force was initially beat down by craftworld eldar in a quick refresher game a friend and i played, but in the end, as I watched the crumpled mass of the farseer's helmet tumble from the powerfist of Ravenwing sergeant, I stood victorious, although many brethren fell fighting the vile xenos. I was then directed here by a noble tech-seer upon my return from the engagement as my tactics may be a bit rusty and I was informed you lot may very well be capable of turning my mind as sharp as it used to be; so that even more enemies of the Emperor may fall beneath my powered boots.

So anyway, Intro-check

lots of pics-check

conclusion-flaky...

to sum up, I haven't played 40k since the middle of 3rd ed, and I heard that you guys may be able to help guide me in learning the rules of the Dark angels, as even the old 4th ed stuff was a bit out of my way.

any help, tips, or comments are most welcome!

Wow, you got quite an army in the making there...

Welcome to the Rock - I'm sure you'll find a lot of expirienced people here to help you out with rules and paintign tips (should you require the latter - you might be Picasso for all I know...) :D

Cool tatoos too! ;)

Welcome (back) to the Rock! Love the tattoos, now that is commitment

This is my third time in the hobby, its funny how it can take a back seat for years at a time and then just somehow drags you back in. I reckon it gets better every time though, hope you enjoy it even more this time around too.

Any particular area of 6th edition you are struggling with, or looking for pointers on?

welcome, again, to the Rock. For your sins, may I suggest a measure of repentance and meditation? We have some excellent cells that I am sure you will find sufficient for your needs...

Thats a nice collection my friend! Now finish painting and get fighting in the name of the Lion!

To be honest, I'm going into this with mostly fresh eyes, as a full newcomer would do. I have the "new" DA codex, and while its much heavier and involved then my third edition codex, I still find a few things confusing. why are the scouts elites? why did they get rid of the armoury? I'm also trying to work out good tactics for my current force, as in the one game I played so far, I ran my bikes up towards the front line of the Eldar, and then turn two, had both my DW termmies teleport in, only to find out afterwards that they couldn't assault. which basically left me standing there with a big "put it in my butt, don't worry about the lube" sign.

I also wonder, when firing a blast weapon, you place the marker down. is it still 2d6 minus BS if you moved and 1d6 if you didn't move?

welcome to the Rock! that is an amazing force! I'll be following this.

Oh, and kudos on the Lucky strikes, it seems you have great taste in more than just armies!

Thanks man. They are a WIP but so far, I seem to have a pretty decent force. just need to get them painted. and modified. I'm one of those "the model has what the model has" kind of guys. If I'm going to give someone a melta bomb, he's going to have a melta bomb on his belt. I picked up the Luckies shortly after I saw band of brothers as I wanted to try them, and I never went back, they are amazing. I even had my Gunny pick them up for a while.

ok! Finally "finished" one of my Ravenwing sergeant models (need to work on the headlight but I didn't have the paints needed). But I don't know if I am going to leave him as a sergeant. I think he came out pretty decent. might make him a mounted character or something.

I still find a few things confusing. why are the scouts elites?

Even weirder: Why don't our scouts have the special rule "Scout"?

The only thing I can think is that they wanted to push DA players to Ravenwing and Deathwing builds to differentiate from other codex compliant / near-compliant Astartes chapters. Our scouts beat the pants off of almost any other chapter's scouts thanks to that BS and WS4. Of course, then you run into that problem where we have to pay for basic stuff like sniper rifles and cannot take camo cloaks.

The only time I really ever use DA scouts are in small points games where it gets hard to field enough units to get any real guns on the table. Five scouts infiltrating with sniper rifles and a missile launcher costs around 120 and will present enough of a threat that your scoring units will get left alone while they get into position. Other than that, my scouts just sit in a box looking nice.

This is an awesome army there AngelVeto - and a lot of painting to do! Good luck and keep posting pics. ;) It seems like the Path to Redemption was tailor-made for you - with such a huge backlog! hahahaha! :P

@ Brother Immolator: your affection to "beakies" is disturbing and you should visit the psyco-apothecary at first opportunity. Oh, and have a Chaplain present!

Beakies are approved of the Lion, even though their obvious Ravenguard connection. Besides they help to establish the pecking order by their pure awesomeness.

(The clever marines of the Ravenwing wear them also, as they are much more aerodynamic.)

Furioso: I cant tell if that is a good thing or not

Thank you all for the kind words. My Oath will see My Vindicator Painted, as well as 6 more bikes.

Welcome to the board. Also, beakie marines are awesome! I forced myself to play multiplayer in the Space Marine game on my PS3 just so I could have full MK VI armor. I know you don't like the helmets, but I bet you love the studded shoulder pads they come with. :P

To be honest, I'm not a fan of the studded shoulder pad. That I can't explain as easily as the "headbutt can cause puncture wounds" helmet...

if i had to pick a favourite mark, it would either be the mk. VIII Errant armour

or if I could piece meal it on looks alone, it would an Iron armour Helmet, Errant Chest and shoulder pads, crusade armour legs,

functioning armour preference, would be straight up errant armour. its pretty much win

( Of course all the info I'm using to come up with this preference is from the Deathwatch RPG as it gives a pretty awesome breakdown of the different Marks.)

As the resident beakie nerd i find your dislike of them curious. Feel free to mail me the heads anytime XD

unfortunately, my beakie removal tool doesn't leave anything that can be called a functioning helmet... I can still mail you the slag if you really want...
