The Neverborn
Hi, I was gathering some paints together online at the GW store and i was shocked about how much they were going to cost me, almost as much of the models I was going to paint :) I Had a peak round the internet and found 1 alternative, Coat d'arms paints. I was just wondering if there are any other paints available in the UK that are cheaper and, if so, which ones are of the highest quality? cheers, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261417-alternative-paints/ Share on other sites
Razblood
Coat D'Arms paints are in fact the classic Citadel paints under another name and are very nice to use, plus have all the classic colours. They also come in bigger pots. Privateer Press' P3 range are very similar to Coat D'Arms and come in the same pots, but have a wider colour range. Then there is Vallejo who have multiple paint ranges, including the Game Colour line which again has all the classic Citadel colours. These come in dropper bottles. Army Painter have a nice, but small, range. The good thing about them is that the bottled paints colour matches perfectly with their spray primer range. Finally there is the Reaper series of paints, which are apparently very good. Theres probably more, but these are the main 5 alternatives to GW paints and you can get the majority of them from Wayland Games Hope this helps :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261417-alternative-paints/#findComment-3180929 Share on other sites
S.k.i.t.t.l.e
I recently switched most of my paints to Vallejo Game color and I have zero complaints. I got them from Maelstrom Games, and they are much cheaper (especially since they have 5ml more per bottle) than GW paints. Maelstrom are pretty cheap, have a good reward scheme and have great sales on throughout the year. They're a bit slow at sending stuff sometimes, but I can live with that. :) Oh and its free UK delivery if you spend more than £10. Bartali
Seconded for Vallejo The biggest revelation for me was the Vallejo Model Color range. Highly pigmented like the Citadel Foundation/Base range, but come in 220 different shades as opposed to the 34 of Citadel Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261417-alternative-paints/#findComment-3180969 Share on other sites
Warbringer
I would agree with the consensus here and say that the Vallejo and Coat D'Arms paints i've got and used are great, currently re buying all my colours from Vallejo. Bases i've been using GW Colour Vallejo Ink Coat D'Arm GW Washes Not liking the Metallics i've got so am looking into the Liquid Metals from Vallejo Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261417-alternative-paints/#findComment-3180971 Share on other sites
The Neverborn
Ok i'm sold on Vallejo. Do they do Inks? I need to paint some catchans, imperial guard tanks - cammo & black mainly and a Deathwing Land Raider. Where's the best place to buy from, checking out - http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?...cre=hob-val-mcl Most of the stock seems to be "order now", so i'm guessing out of stock. 37cee
I switched to the different Vallejo products, including Aircolor. Most likely because they work better with Airbrush. While the GW Colours worked, but it was much harder, they were much harder to thin (at least i had the feeling that about any colour had its own colour to thinner ratio). Had no problems with the Vallejo Game / Model / Air Colours so far (and my retailer gives a discount on those colours). I still have some GW colours, but most of them are the last batch i bought when i wanted to test the new colour range. I'm still stuck with the GW Washes though, haven't tried the Vallejo ones yet. Razblood
Vallejo Inks are ok, proper ink though not washes and so work a bit differently. I use the Sepia Ink for really deep shading on browns, reds and fleshtones and it works really well. I've heard the Vallejo Lavado washes are a bit crap, even when compared to the new GW washes. Coat D'Arms washes are just great and I definitely need to get some in the near future (I have the old blue lid Citadel washes) Army Painter washes are really good. They only do three flavours though - Soft Tone (Gryphonne Sepia), Strong Tone (Devlan Mud) & Dark Tone (Badab Black). Im using these heavily and find them to be much better than the new GW washes. Best place I know of for Vallejo stuff in the UK online is Wayland Games, which I linked in my earlier post ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261417-alternative-paints/#findComment-3180995 Share on other sites

JohnnyNorway
First time I tried Vallejo paints, I was sold on them. Bought them from creativemodels, and my only regret is not buying the set, as that would have cost me a little less than buying the individual bottles. Dechande
I use a lot of paints from the Foundry Painting system, I got the whole set and the WWII set (great earthy colours) they save time being set out in 3's, I highly recommend these. The bottles are 20ml (GW's are 12ml) and most of them are as strong as GW's foundation colours/base colours (whatever they call them now). PipX
For certain colors I buy the Folk Art acrylic paints for Walmart, for most it's a dollar for 2oz of paint. Some shades don't thin well in water, don't have access to a mixing medium, and the pigment kind of "tears" in it, but quite a lot of the colors thin well. Mazer Rackham
Can't really add much to what has already been said. Vallejo, P3, CDA - they all have some great lines and wonderful rich tones. Plus CDA and P3 are make in the UK and are 18ml. P3 also use a liquid pigment and it takes aaaaages for it to separate. Vallejo is 17ml of awesomesauce. I can however chip in on the Vallejo washes query: Green: Fair Blue: Fair Red: Rubbish Fleshtone: Excellent Umber: Excellent Pale: Genius. It shades white. It does it really well. MR. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261417-alternative-paints/#findComment-3181154 Share on other sites

appiah4
I use FolkArt craft paints (Apple Barrel and Americana are similar quality and range paints) and I think they work just fine. Just be careful with low coverage paints like yellow - I tend to invest in foundation (base colors now I guess) paints for painting these. Paint is kind of overrated in my opinion. A good brush with average paint is always enough for me. Bartali
Does anyone know which Vallejo paint is closest to the old Bleach Bone? Here is a good color comparison for the most common paints including GW's classic and contemporary lines. http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Ra...atibility_Chart I have to look this up all the time, I really should bookmark it :D Bleached Bone: Vallejo Game Color -- Bonewhite (034) Vallejo Model Color -- Buff (976) Bonewhite is probably the closest to the old Bleached Bone, Buff isn't quite there (a little bit more yellowey). Buff is great though, highly pigmented. If I was doing Deathwing now, I'd probably start with a buff basecoast, sepia wash and then layer with bonewhite. If you're in the UK, you might be suprised that the Vallejo range (at least Model Color) is available in quite a few high streets. Look for model shops catering for military modellers. Parabellum in Birmingham for instance carries the full Vallejo Range - Model Color, Model Air, Game Color, Panzer Aces, Washes, Varnishes etc Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261417-alternative-paints/#findComment-3184848 Share on other sites
Jakbal
I know that this discussion is mostly concluded, but I just wanted to state that I got annoyed by how complicated the GW paint line became ... and I went full Army Painter. There aren't that many colors, but the colors they have are all really good. The bottles are nice as well. I find that every color I want is either available or easily mixed. In addition, having a color spray primer with matching paints is pretty nice. That said, I always get upset at the idea of $15 for a can of spray paint, and usually just prime white from a $1.20 can from WalMart. I use the color primer from Army painter only on lager items that would take a lot of effort to base coat. I'm happy with these paints. Rune Priest Ridcully
I am going to be trying either Coat D' Arms or Vallejo paints as well, not sure which to try first, but will do. And to think paints were the one thing I still bought from GW in any kind of amount, and if you had asked me a couple of years ago if I would want to try the othe paint ranges I would have wanted to stick with the GW ones.
