Demus Ragnok
I've just started trying my hand at painting and I have some questions. I have Citadel paints, just a few colors. My question is what do you all use to mix paints from the little pots. I've been using little medicine droppers and haven't been happy with the results. I got some cheap varity packs of brushes from walmart to learn on. My question is, when I get ready to buy more brushes what sizes are better for what processes. I mean is a 0 small enough for details or do I need a 3/0 or what. I find myself starting to really enjoy painting minis, and I'm ready to start improving my skill set. Thanks all. Darklighter
Ok I'll start with saying brush size can vary a huge amount from manufacturer to manufacturer and that size of brush is a very personal thing. Now that's out of the way. Yes I would buy a brush smaller than size 0 a few in fact get a 3/0 and then fine the absolute smallest you can find (I got a 30/0). You'll also need some larger brushes with a different shape. Flat brushes are really good for base coating and over-brushing. With the smaller brushes you'll find as your skill and confidence increase you'll need them less and less as (if like me) you find the point of a larger brush small enough for most jobs. But until you've had the practice you'll find the smaller brush indispensable (mine only gets used now for scroll work). Also a good place to find brushes is an art supplier a good sable brush shouldn't cost you more than £3. As for mixing paint I just take a little paint out of the pot with an old/cheap brush (unless I'm being lazy then it's the brush in my hand) and mix them on a old tea plate with water. Getting the paint the right consistency is very trial and error most will tell you to the consistency of milk, but it's what ever works best for you. The main goal is to make sure you have a thin smooth coverage on your models.
