Does anyone paint their GK grey and not silver?

Actually old school Grey Knights were black with silver helmets. The Grey in there name is because of the meld of the Emperors light and the Darkness they fight, symbolizing them always being on the front...back in the day (4th ED) some of the stories about the Grey Knights is they would arrive and just kill everything (friend and foe alike)...The Inquisition couldn't risk leave someone that came into contact with taint and be turned...now they are more poster boys that can back up the bling.

But to add to this i have half of mine painted Chrome (almost like metal) and the other half like the old color...i call them Black Knights (the name given by a Commisor after witnessing then wipe out a small Daemon army)

I did!

These look fantastic, first off!

But I can't help but keep seeing Space Wolves. Nothing against it, just my eyes trained to that color after so many years reenacting the "Twilight" series of my BA vs many friends' space wolves.

I'm going to go for the old black style armor, whenever I finally get around to buying paint for my guys.

Thanks! I know it's an uncommon scheme for GK... I was inspired by the HH description of "unpainted" plates (in Garro's series, mostly). The grey is a lot darker than SW should be, but I see where it's similar. The foremost reason, though, was that I had an extensive metallic painted metal GK army and I wanted to do something different. Since I'm dabbling in military modeling, that "gunship" grey seemed cool!

My men are silver but my vehicles are grey and "unpainted", as I enjoyed that bit of story too.

That hardly looks like Space Wolves to me. That grey is tinted with black; SW grey is tinted with blue. Big difference, to me :D

Not quite DK1. First, the color in that scan is somewhat darker than the actual photo that was in the White Dwarf; what looks to be black in the picture you provided was more of a charcoal grey in its original format. It looks like it is time for my to port over my Grey Knight history lesson for all of the new folks on the board:

Valerian's History Lesson on Grey Knights.

Oh, and for the record, I had my own Grey Knights army commission-painted in that same charcoal grey:

Those are nice looking dreadnoughts :tu:

Indeed. What mix of paint is that? Nice charcoal grey there.

Gentlemen, as I stated, the army was commission painted, so I have no idea what mix of paint he used. Thanks though, I think they did turn out quite well, too.

As much as I can see (pictures don't always turn out 100% accurate color tones!), looks like a charadon granite base that was drybrushed with codex grey. Charadon granite is dicontinued, though, and the replacements aren't 100% similar :D

Nice work on those dread, was it a friend?

I also play as Black Templars, so I have an abundance of black paints left over to use with them, so I paint mine black with silver and gold shoulder pads and helmets. After I got this paint scheme, I found out about the whole "old armor" fluffy bits, and long story short, I can now explain why I paint these guys the color I do other than to pass it off as a natural disposition to black.

It was Blue Table Painting, and done 7 years ago, or thereabouts. I've moved on to Drew Olds at Garden Ninja Painting, now however. Drew's work is far superior, and still at a very reasonable rate.
