Plasma is the new melta?

Apparently, I've fallen into a bit of luck because I modeled my WG with combi-plasmas (hey, you work with what's in the box).

But it sounds like I'm gonna have to pry those FW meltas out of the hands of my Grey Hunters and replace them with the plasma guns that I was saving to make las/plas Razorbacks.

Why? Why are we suddenly OK with playing Russian Roulette with plasma? Have the stats on these weapons changed that much?

Plasma love is a side effect of changes to melee combat.

Power weapons changed so that AP3 is standard if you strike at initiative.

Plasma is top AP2 option now

It just gets better with shooting rules allowing movement and single shot long range plus wolf priest preferred enemy giving rerolls for shooting.

I second everything that has been said except armour could always be taken against gets hot.

That being said Melta is just as good as ever against armour and if you still play against mech or FNP which seems to be everywhere, at least for me, then melta is great only now plasma is much closer to equal and more fun. Also recall that the onset of 5th edition was heralded as the infantry age and a departure from rhino rush.

At 1500 points, I used to play two squads of meltas and one squad of plasmas, but now I've switched them. Melta still serves it's purpose, it's definitely still the spearhead of my grey hunters, especially since you can charge after firing them, but plasma gets a lot more focus now.

One of my new favorite things is my footslogging wolves, with a 10 man 2x melta, 1x plasma pistol, 1x WG with Multi Melta. The pain this pack can bring, combined with 2x plasma packs sitting back on each side. Vehicles don't stand a chance.

The extra range when using plasma guns has so far been a great advantage from what I've seen so far. That extra 12" allows you to keep your troops in cover, instead of constantly moving to get into range with the melta gun. Try to find some people with extra bits now while you can.

I think the other reason Plasma is better now is because Krak Grenades are much more effective with the new "to hit" rules when assaulting vehicles. Melta is certainly needed for big things like Land Raiders but in general Marines have more ways to kill vehicles now than they did previously. It's not as necessary to specialize certain units for tank hunting. Plasma plays very well into the good at everything great at nothing format.
