Legion Selection

Recommended Posts

Hello heresy Brethren

with the new release of the Horus Heresy book my Forge world i have the urge to start some sort of Pre- heresy, heresy era army.

but im a bit torn between which legion i should do.

my favorite primarch as always been Rogal Dorn, and being a black templars fan for many years it would seem like a natural choice, but something

in the back of my mind is telling me no. i have thought of maybe a Blood angels army, or even a Ultramarines army.

if you could lend some ideas, adivce, or say which legion you play that would be great ;)

p.s

feel free to post pics of your armies if you want, and if your loyal to the Warmaster, try and sway me to Horus' side ;)

regards

This is very much a matter of taste. Every Legion is cool in its own way, but everyone has his favourite. The Imperial Fists would be a good choice. Do you know what it is in particular that makes you refrain from choosing them? But then the Blood Angels or the Ultramarines would be good choices as well. Those three Legions are not so different, at least in attitude and outlook. They are pretty much the three "august" of the loyalist legions (the Blood Angels would fall from grace only after the Heresy). The Imperial Fists and the Blood Angels have bragging rights for having fought in the defense of Terra. The Ultramarines were the most accomplished of all during the Great Crusade, and they rode in and picked up the broken Imperium at the end of the Heresy. They are also all on very good terms with one another (don't let people who misread the Black Templars background tell you otherwise).
The problem with the Ultramarines is they aren't present at the climatic and key event, the Siege of Terra. The problem with the Imperial Fists is that they are only present (so far) at two relatively minor skirmish (Mars and Phall) and the Siege of Terra and the IF will almost certainly will be the last Legion to get covered in a book. That said I'm a Templar player whose already planning his Heresy era Imperial Fists 1st Company led by the Emperors Champion Sigismund himself.

@Legatus: the only hold back with the Imperial fist is how im going to tackle the yellow, and as well i feel that i might be missing out on what

the other legions might have to offer

@Arachnid99: very true when you say that the imperial fist will be last in the horus heresy books by forge world. and as well they have played and small part

in the horus heresy books as well.

i am still researching at the moment. but i have gotten down a shopping list for my army at the moment, which stands at one Crusade armour pack, one iron

armour pack, and phobos pattern bolters. anyways keep up with the ideas for sure :o

Well one good question to ask would be "What do you want out of you Heresy-era army?" in terms of aesthetics and playstyle.

Unless one already has their hands on the upcoming Forgworld HH rule book, it would be prudent to focus on aesthetics for the moment.

It sounds from your original post that although you love the Imperial Fists, you might be looking for something different.

As Legatus pointed out, the Blood Angels and Ultramarines are similar enough to the Imperial Fists to be comfortable. Could still be rocking the proud and resplendent "classic" Legion style.

The Wolves and the Scars are the opposite in aesthetics, being more feral and "barbarian" than classic Imperial.

Any of the three Dropsite Massacare survivors, the Salamanders, Raven Guard, and Iron Hands, offer distinct modeling possibilities. Each Legion is different, with the Raven Guard and Iron Hands gravitating toward the utilitarian and the Salamanders toward an functional artisan aesthetic. All three offer the chance to mix and match earlier mark armor pieces from model to model and unit to unit to create a "dogged and defiant survivor" feel to the army.

Dark Angels maintain their gothic splendor, even in the age of the Heresy. They can be done up in a distinctly Arthurian approach with minor emphasis on resplendent winged helmets and heraldry and reduction on the robes and skulls.

Putting aside the practical concerns of time and money, you have a plethora of options.

I too have been thinking about this - but I would like to concentrate on a pre-fall traitor legion (i.e. during the Great Crusade). Ideally they'd be fast and assault-y (so no Iron Warriors!): I appreciate at least 2 loyal legions (RG and DA, possibly BA and SW) fulfil this remit, but to my mind the HH series should be about the almost-damned and not-quite lost......

hello all

so i have reached a verdict on what "loyal" legion i will be focusing on... drum roll please.... and the winner is!

BLOOD ANGELS!

so i have said yes to the sons of Sanguinius. reason for this change from imperial fist to blood angels is that first off, my favourite colour is Crimson, second i have always liked Sanguinius, dare i say even more than Rogal Dorn. and lastly ever since the blood angels codex came out awhile back, ive kinda fell in love with the whole feel of the army itself.

so thanks again for all your comments! they where very helpful!
