Land Speeder Storms for Space Wolves

Hey brothers! Just wondering, since I know we can't use the Land Speeder storm, but if converted, say, removing all the scouts and putting Grey Hunter marines in the front, can these models be used as normal Land Speeders (or as Typhoon with the missiles)?

I know the vehicle itself looks a little bigger than the normal LS, but will it still be tourney if converted like that?

I was thinking of converting one so the Storm looks it's being used to ferry cargo or wounded marines, while being piloted by Powered Armored marines. Kinda like a Grey Hunter medi-vac or a Huey or Black Hawk chopper status, rather than an Apache.

No idea if it would be tourney legal or not, but as it's a counts-as I wouldn't think it would be an issue otherwise...If I recall correctly the base size for the Storm and the reg Land Speeder are the same size and it's usually only bases and height that are ever an issue (Other than non GW models in a GW tourney and occasional FW but that's a whole different can o worms.)

Personally I think it would be an awesome conversion. If you do one I want to see the pics of the bad boy! Hehe...

To quote someone, somewhere, famous.... "That sounds like a capital idea!"

Yeah, I think I'm gonna go for it.

Speaking of which, another question-

How are Land Speeders with 6th edition for us Wolves? I heard it's now all missiles and the other two variants are crappy in comparison? Is that right?

it's a good idea - i'm using the storm with a few weapons upgrades and conversions to act as speeders. I however am keeping the scouts and using them (fluff wise) as transports for 2 man sniper teams. Just be careful there isn't as much space in the rear compartment as you'd think so you may have to expand it with plasticard if you're wanting power armoured guys in there.

Good luck!!

go for it! you might even want to instal some extra bionic surgery arms that aid the wolf priest as he pulls the wounded marines from the field.

I can see it painted for me. a crisply clean painted landspeederstorm, and the pasager compartment sprayed with blood as the wolf priest takes care of a seriously wounded marine

Yeah, the back compartment looks pretty stuffy, judging from pictures of the Storms without the scouts onboard. I just hope the Grey Hunters can fit correctly in the front seat, or I'm screwed if I buy it and they don't. Has anyone assembled one? Is it the exact same as the front section of normal vanilla landspeeders?

Hopefully it's not like the scout bikes, which seems like it can fit only scout legs and not power armored legs.

I'm running a few fluff ideas through my head right now. One is a medi-vac storm, with empty space in the back to ferry wounded marines out of battle. Probably replicate the geneseed canister on the Macragge lieutenant, and have all kind of jars and vials or IV bags on the walls.

Two, currently what I'm leaning on, is a multi-purpose Cargo Speeder, probably have the back filled with cargo crates, ammo cans and what not. They might use these to quickly ferry a maintenance crew of servitors to a a land raider that broke down, or transport the Wolf Lord from one end of the front to the rear HQ if need be. Kinda like a Land Speeder Jeep, but in this case, more like a hover-halftrack or a hover Deuce truck.

The third option, as part of a pack, I have the vehicles in mind for a pack of Landspeeder Grey Hunters, something along the line of We Were Soldiers or Black Hawk Down. The pack would operate like a unit of 1st Air Cav. Probably a pack of 11 Power Armored Grey Hunters (10 Greys, 1 Wolf Guard), assigned to two modified Land Speeder Storms and a Typhoon acting as a gunship. 3 would be pilots, including the wolf guard, and 3 would be shotgun door gunners, while the other 5 are riding in teams of 2 or 3 with the Storms. Fluff wise, they would fly to an objective, drop down so the five man squad can deploy, storm a bunker, research installation, or a traitor Lord Governor's villa, while the Typhoon lays down heavy ordinance. The three speeders would lift off and provide Heavy bolter suppression, before touching down again to give the pack a getaway vehicle.

I'm also considering converting the Storms into Typhoons, wondering if that's legal. I saw someone mount typhoon rockets under the wing for a normal land speeder. Might be able to do the same with the Storm too?

It could be called the Space Wolf Snow-Storms!

Your completely fine with running the storm as a counts as Typhoon, could be a great conversion. I like the idea of mounting the missile under the wings in fact if you could find the old Whirlwind metal missile bits you could break it in down to mount the pods under the wings or even finding a kids toy with missiles and mount those. Heck even two of the old/current TDA missile pods would look cool.

Good luck and make sure to post progression pics.

Vrox.

**snip**

It's not quite the same, but close enough. The Stormraven pilot's legs fit in there no problem, with normal torsos on top. I don't have pictures of my build, but I'll try and remember to post some up later

As long as the model is not smaller than a land speeder, has the same base and height, you're ok. Generally, it is when you convert for an advantage that people frown on a model.

As to effectiveness, speeders are dead in this edition. Low hull points and the fact that bolters can glance them means good bye.

The only speeder I would take would be a deep striking multi melta, or a naked heavy bolter speeder and have it fly around, hopefully dodging AA and flyers to maybe contest an objective. Not worth it IMHO.
