GW Flickr Attempt

Hey guys I'm trying to attempt a Object Source Light effect on my Emperor's Champion, I am attempting to send this guy to GW's flickr pool for additional

motivation for them not to shelve our codex, and instead update/merge us into a better book than the rumoured C:SM coz frankly I don't like Wards' background settings,

his versions of writing backgrounds for the 41st millenia is as bad as Tw1l1ght, or Hung3r G4m3s. :)

Enough rant, I need help in regards to OSL and need feedback on what I need to do, I've tried the tutorial forum and had mixed results, also tried youtube videos but most of them were using the

old paints, any help would be seriously appreciated. Thanks guys!!! :)

Emperor's Champion: Black Knight... (he has no name for he cannot talk, and can only draw the visions that the Emperor gives him in his dreams...)

Lantern

The Light effect I'm trying to accomplish is at the eyes (glow effect), the sword (glowing letters effect), and the lantern.

And currently I don;t feel like I achieved the proper Glow effect for the Lantern part and need help at that... I feel like I'm missing something

any help would be greatly appreciated and critiques or comments or both are always welcome

I think you need to firstly revist those areas where the red glow is being cast and paint them again, at the minute the effect on his cape is a bit more blood smear than OSL.

Here's a really good but short guide to OSL from Chest of Colours: Link

Loving the paintjob overall though, especially the freehand detail on the scrolls.

The eyes look great. I thought the 'light' from the lantern was blood at firsts. I think 'yellow' lighting would be more appropriate for the lantern.

Sorry I can't help you out with any tutorials for the lantern. I haven't really done much OSL on my minis. I paint my eyes with a slight OSL affect. It's not very ambitious but I like the subtlety of it. Some times less is more :)

Absolutely, to clarify I think the light sources (eyes/lamp) look great, it's just the cast light that doesn't quite match up.

I think you need to glaze those areas rather than use solid colour.

Try painting them as if there was no light being cast, then use a 1:10 mix of your red and Lahmian Medium to glaze the area, should give the cast of colour without a solid block of red.

Thanks guys I'll try that Tutorial and I'll try that mix of a medium... I've only used a heaps amount of water and thinned my paints so I'll try the medium nstead of thinning.

or maybe I'll try glazing I'll post it again here once I've made some progress.

For now enjoy my other WIP the Marshal of the Vengeance Crusade: Marshal Roujakis (figured since he's my warlord, might as well be me on the Table ;) )

Note: Did a little bit of yellowing on the Champions OSL too but that was before I read the posts... a GW staff told me what could be missing, but I still feel something missing. The

Marshal is also equipped with a Terminator Armour... he may not look like it because he's using a GK one w/o the built in Hood. (No psykers in a BT army)

The OSL Looks better now, but it stops to abruptly. As the distance from the source increases the intensity decreases. But it doesn't abruptly stop like it is now. I'd blend out the light more fading naturally into the other colours.

Also remember, because the lantern is your light source, anything not in direct contact with it is in a shadow and should be shaded accordingly. IE the inside of his tabbard and the lower jaw/teeth of the skull. By shading these with the lantern as your light source you will create a more realistic and believable effect.

This tutorial might be helpful. http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.de/2010/01/t...-lightning.html

I think your osl effects, especialy on the tabard, are bit too strong for the relatively weak lightsource.

The relative flatness of the black might be another problem because it contrasts with the illusion of light and shadows you wish to achive.

Oh and btw, while it can be helpful you don't realy need a specific medium to create glazes. Water ( perhaps with a tiny tiny amount of dishwashing liquid ) is, at least in my somewhat limited, experience sufficient.
