Castellan Alaric
so after my game yesterday i got my first strike box and love the models. here is the first coat of leadbelcher: http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x419/warriormid8/photo44-1.jpg followed by a coat of nuln oil: http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x419/warriormid8/photo26-1.jpg hammer pose "i'm gonna run you over" http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x419/warriormid8/photo17-1.jpg halberd justicar: http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x419/warriormid8/photo27-1.jpg group shot: http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x419/warriormid8/photo16-1.jpg batrep vs BT: 1000 points and we played purge the alien (kp's). his list: chappy(arty armor, jump pack, plas pistol), ec, 9 assault marines - 1 fist, all storm shields, crusader squad (9) - melta&fist, crusader squad (5) - missile&plasma, terminators (5) - cyclone, assault cannon. my list: OMI-TDA,PC,psyker1 paladins-2xPC,hammer strikes (10) - 2xPC,hammer,psybolts strikes (10) - 2xPC,hammer,psybolts so this game was a massacre. he went first, moved up first turn, slung some missiles around to no effect. now, on my turn the slaughter began. paladins moved up with the inq casting prescience on them and they killed 4 (!!) terminators in one volley. the last termy with an assault cannon ran 5" back. my deployed strike squad (deep striked the other) killed 7 (!!!!!!!!!!) assault marines in one volley! :woot: so basically half of his army was gone on turn 1. his turn 2 his chappy and last 2 assault marines got into combat with my strikers. justicar and chappy challenge (justicar had a hammer) nothing happened on his assault turn. i killed 1 assault marine and he killed 1 knight in return. my turn 2 saw my 2nd strike squad come down and kill the last termy. the pallies and inq moved out and killed all but 2 crusaders + ec in the foot squad, while the justicar splatted the chappy in the challenge. he called it after i killed his chappy. basically everything i found in gk was wonderful this game. mid-range shooting to decimate all, and resilience once in combat (even vs assault marines) was nice. any comments on my painting or batrep are MUCH appreciated and encouraged! much appreciated~ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/ Share on other sites
Vash
Good game. You played GK as they are meant too, shoot them to soften them up, and then finnish off with close combat. Sure you were a bit lucky with some rolls it seems, but thats how it goes with a game based on dices. :D Painting, well the pictures are really dark mate. Cant make much of them, and doesnt really do justice to your miniatures. Are they finished or is there some more details to be done? For example, the red shoulder pads I do think could use a layer of Agrax Earthshade. Followed by a layer of your red paint. This will give it some depth. The gold areas I would also paint with agrax earthshade, but thats just my personal preference. Gives nice shades to the gold areas. Castellan Alaric
Not near done on my models man. I'm planning on gryphonne sepia for my gold washing. Also, I need to get a newer red that covers better, mine sucks lol at this rate I'll have 4 layers of the stuff pm there. Anywho I'll work on getting some better lit pics here during the week. Thanks for the moment vash! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3186687 Share on other sites
Vash
No worries mate. Looking forward to one model finished. I find gryphon sepia an exelent choice for washing, BUT... its out of print. Meaning once your out of that wash, thats it. The closest one you get now is Seraphim Sepia, and that one isnt really the same. I would still recommend Agrax Earth shade, but thats my personal preference, since I like strong contrast between shaded areas and unshaded areas. Castellan Alaric
I totally understand your preference man, but I don't really have the dough to be buying a bunch 'o paint so I'll stick with gryphonne sephia for the gold stuff right now, I might change and try nuln oil on em and see how they each work. Hopefully I'll get a game bs my ork opponent this Saturday to keep up my gk win streak :P EDIT: corrections Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3187622 Share on other sites
Castellan Alaric
small update for my painting. started the red shoulder pads and storm bolters. does the red break up the dark metal armor and gold trimmings? also, i have no idea what to do with the left chapter pad. any ideas? http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x419/warriormid8/photo3-2.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3188193 Share on other sites
Zeratul29
Well for the book shoulder pads, I've always painted it like a real book and gold lettering. Also, I really like your paint scheme, I always enjoy seeing people's models who varied from the regular paint scheme. Vash
For the shoulder pads I would go for simple heraldry, found in the GK codex. As for the red, it stands out enough and a simple wash over them will give them more depth. Castellan Alaric
@zeratul thanks for the compliment man! I was going for a deep dark metal look and I think my scheme has pulled it off better than I could have hoped! @vash I'll look at the codex tonight and see if there are any decent ideas for heraldry and such. Great idea with the wash on the red, I think once I get the metal painted on the bolters I'll just wash all of it with nuln oil. Now for power weps I was thinking of doing a dark blue to white down the middle of the blades. Kind of a lightning effect I guess lol I'm gonna give it a go tonight after work and see my results. Thanks again for all the comments fellas, keep em comin I love the feedback. Oh, and yes they will be based, but as I'm a total noob at basing my buddy (who's a basing genius) is gonna give me some lessons lol (on my iPhone so sorry for typing errors if there are any) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3188659 Share on other sites
Zeratul29
Vash is right, there are some nice starting points for heraldry in the codex, and for me personally, it helped me come up with my own variants. oh and you might consider drilling in the holes on the bolters to make them more "realistic", personally i haven't done them because I don't have a drill at the moment.. Also, on the swords. Lightning is always a good choice, I know there are several guides to lightning in the painting forums, so check them out to see if you find one you like. Vash
Oh totally missed the drilling of the weapon pipes. :) I my self had a problem with the psycannon... I only have the GW standard drill. And that hole it makes is way to small, so I used the pipes of the psilenser. The pipes of the psilenser are a piece you glue on separately, so cutting them into individual pipes will give you 3 pipes for 3 psycannons. I dont know if you can see it so clearly on my picture I have here, but if you dont, just tell me and I'll take a close up on just the psycannon model. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Grey%20Knights/interceptors1-1.jpg I think it adds more realistic barrel to the psycannon, and of course a larger barrel exit. Zeratul29
Hmm, I do like what you did with the psilencer's barrel, I may have to try it with the next box of pagk's I buy Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3190768 Share on other sites
Castellan Alaric
thanks for the suggestions gents, not a lot of painting time atm with work and my girl, but i'll try to get some more done this week. really if i can get the left book shoulder pads done i'll have some decent table top quality (kinda what i'm going for) minus some detailing. i'm really happy with the armor color i've achieved, just kinda worried how it'll look across the huge frame of the NDK i want. you guys think it could work? just lots of paint and wash? Vash
Hope you find some time mate. At the moment I have decent time for painting. Then again, I am a speed painter so I dont need much time. Finished (or almost) a 10 man unit of "psykers" (IG catachan and IG cadian command models). For the NDK and your paint scheme. It will work out fine. Just make sure to cover the areas with a nice thin layer of metallic. Water it down if needed (preferably mix it with GWs medium instead of water). The smoother the layer you have, the better the washing will be when you apply it. Castellan Alaric
that pyscannon barrel idea is genius! and i do hope i'll get some time too. those models will probably have to wait til christmas, as i'm saving (and paying off) an engagement ring right now, so i don't have a lotta extra dough  i'll have my force though. on ebay there is a store called discount game store (if you want to link i can PM it to you) and they are selling a bundle of exactly what i want: 4xgkpa, 2xgkta, 1xndk (i can exchange 1 pagk box for some cadian stormtroopers to use and inq stormtroops or something) all for right at $250. free shipping. insane deals. thanks again vash for all your help, this saturday morning (seems to be my only free day to game) i will try to fight my ork buddy with my 1250 gk and let you know how it goes. Zeratul29
Nice, i really need to transition over to an all plastic army, as I am still playing with a majority of metal  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3193206 Share on other sites
Circus Nurgling
You say that like it's a bad thing. Mine is 100% metal except for my OM Inquisitor and (more obviously) the vehicles. Hell Draigo and Crowe are worth quite a bit of money in metal. Zeratul29
Well i don't mind, its just a pain when the arms snap off and for gaming since their more likely to fall over :/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3194277 Share on other sites
Circus Nurgling
I pinned all mine. It's a pain, but they've fallen all the way to the floor and nothing broke off. Bent, but nothing I couldn't straighten. I'm really just givin you a hard time, don't mind me. I totally see why people prefer plastic to metal for a variety of reasons. Zeratul29
Thanks, but i do like the metal ones, i would just prefer to play with plastic, plus more models to paint when i do get more plastics Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3194292 Share on other sites
Castellan Alaric
plastic can be easier and more difficult to transport too. lighter, but more likely to snap instead of bend. trade offs i guess. thanks for all the comments guys, i'll probably be going slow as real life's catchin up with me a bit, but if i can get a quick game in this weekend i'll post up a batrep for ya. Castellan Alaric
gk vs orks at 750, i got a quick game in as i was leaving vs orks at 750 and it went pretty well. his list: warboss - bike, klaw, boss pole nob bikerz - 7,painboy,smattering of klaws 'ard boys - 11+nob in a trukk gk list: brotherhood champ strikers - 10 2xPC,hammer,halberd justicar, psybolts strikers - 10 2xPC,hammer,halberd justicar, psybolts dread-2xAC's,psybolts so we rolled up 3 obj's and dawn of war deployment. i knew with all of his speed was gonna get the game down and dirty and in a hurry (no intention for rhyming, i swear). so i got first turn and deployed 1 squad on an obj on the right flank with the dread for company and the other strike squad with the champ in a crater with the other obj. he was in his trukk gonna come towards the dread's obj and bikers were gonna go the other way (i thought before i started my turn). so basically this was gonna be a sit and shoot the piss outa him type game, and that's exactly what i did. the only models that moved was my dread lol turn 1 i blew up the trukk with the autocannons and it kareened to about ~15" away from the dread's obj and blew up, killing 4 orks and pinning them. he moved his bikers across his deployment zone to come at my champ+squad. i moved the dread towards the bikes, shooting at them killing 1 outright. the right flank strikers killed 7 orks, leaving the nob by himself. the other strikers shot to little effect. the bikers moved up again firing and killing 2, they tried to charge and failed a 7" charge haha  this turn it got really nasty. the dread shot the bikers again, this time killing 2. the strikers on the right turned the last nob into little bits of fish food. the strikers on my left flank shoot the bikers, killing another (painboy, YES). now, this turn he shot with the bikers and killed 4 including the justicar...leaving only 2 knights left with the champ to combat 2 bikers and the warboss. so i challenged the warboss, taking the defensive stance, and ended up heroic sacrificing against him successfully. with herald of titan, is it re-rolls to hit in ALL phases of combat, or just when the champ charges? my other two knights wounded once and i force weaponed that nob :tu: then the other nob gibbed both those nobs and got splatted by autocannons and psybolts of the other squad. mid-range was epic, and my saves weren't all that great. in the end, i had a feeling i was gonna blast him off the board, but i was surprised he brought nob bikers to a 750 game. i have played orks more than any other army, but never face nob bikers. thoughts on my 750 list? i had a list that featured a psybolt-razor for one of the strike units and a 63 point power armored psyker inq with prescience, but i wanted to try the brotherhood champ out. Castellan Alaric
So i just aquired 5 GKT, crowe, bro champ, 1 PA incinerator, 3 psycannons, 6 halbers and 2 sword justicars with the codex for the great cheap price of $70. Below is my contruction of a 750 list with the 5 strikes i had before i aquired these models. http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x419/warriormid8/photo4-2.jpg bro champ - 100 GKT 5 - 4 halberds, 1 hammer, 1 PC 225 strikes 10 - 5 halbers (justicar too), 1 hammer, 2 PC, psybolts 265 purifiers 5 - 2 halbers, 2 PC, psybolts 160 total 750 i don't really need a whole lot more to reach my 1250 list which is great. i typically like opening things up from the box myself and frown on buying 2nd hand, but this deal was way too good to pass up. I'm going to use this list in a 750 tourney i'm playing in tomorrow. Pretty excited with the possibilities to grow my force from here! Zeratul29
For the bro champ its only when him and his unit charge that you get rerolls to hit, he's like a chaplain but WAY better for a 100 pts, despite being 1 wound, for 100 pts, he does a great amount, compared to similar models in other codexes mind you. and good luck to you on your tournament, though I would take a dread if i were you Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/261730-castellan-alarics-grey-knights-batreps/#findComment-3256081 Share on other sites
