Rune Priest Ridcully
I'm doing a pre heresy Salamanders army, (see the tale of 20 gamers) And at the moment have a 10 man tactical squad with sergeant, Multie melta and melta gun, a whirlwind and I am working on the captain at the moment, and I have a stripped and un made land speeder. I am thinking of ordering some more stuff, but as the HH book concerning the Salamanders has not been released yet, I only have a vague idea on the legion lists (is they have 20 man tacticals, pure support weapon squads ect). So what would be safe bet to get? I was thinking of ordering a couple more boxes of arstartes, MKIII and MkIV with bolters, and possibly the apothacary set and/or a predator or more marines? TennisBall
I think people make too much use of the MKIII when they should be using MKII. I know the MKIII looks better, but it's not a general issue armour, it's reinforced MKII for special situations like boarding actions. Unless of course that is retconned. Personally I'd keep it for non jetpack assault troops (which I believe are standard troops that have been upgraded with chainswords) and heavy weapons (- they're less mobile so could do with the extra protection). Are whirlwinds Heresy era now? I see that landspeeders are pretty much in now, interesting to see if they update the fluff in the 40K codex. You will need more marines whatever you do. Maybe you should wait until FW releases its new sets as they can't (I hope) be that far away. It all depends on how much you want to rely on their product and how much you want to convert from existing parts. If you have spare heavy weapons for instance you could convert them to be shoulder mounted or simply buy the FW ones, lascanon especially haven't changed much in design. Sallies have to have a predator Infernus though and get some special weapons sets with the old style missile launcher, flamers and melta guns. A pity that set doesn't come with the dedicated backpack for the ML as it means having to cut off at least one vent on whatever backpack you do decide to use. The original RT one had a big hole in it so that the backpack vent would fit. mysteriousmaskedmystery
i think that assault squads are a separate unit from the upgraded tactical squads. the tactical squad can take chainswords in place of bolters, or buy them to get uber-grit, but i think the assault squads can choose to have their jump packs, or be on foot, or take a transport, and they get a "special weapon" which i assume is like a plasma pistol or power sword for every five models in the squad. but both are troop choices, so it will mostly come down to what you want, or if you want to be true to fluff, which legion to pick to represent. but yeah, you can't go wrong with bolter marines, and assault marines, both are troop choices. and i agree, don't get too much mk III. Rune Priest Ridcully
Yeah, I have decided to get more MKII and Mk IV after putting together the first squad, getting the arms on the MKIII is a pain, though the old metal heavy weapons seem to fit easily :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262085-safe-buys-for-hh-armies/#findComment-3192440 Share on other sites
