Alpha Legion post 'Legion'

Recommended Posts

Age of Darkness has an Alpha Legion/World Eaters/Raven Guard story in the aftermath of Isstvan that has interesting implications. I haven't read Deliverance Lost but wouldn't be surprised if it was linked to this.

Indeed, it's linked. Also to the Raven's Flight audio (now in Shadows of Treachery anthology) but that's almost pure Raven Guard stuff.

Well, whilst not being anything too specific. I felt that the Alpha Legion in DL were portrayed a little simplistically when compared with Legion. They have a plan and yes, it's all very sneaky. However, it all feels very by the numbers, as though Gav Thorpe is holding us by the hand as we walk through the plot.

The plot turns of a good espionage tale should fold away like multiple layers as the reader progresses through the plot. The problem with DL is that we are constantly being told what the legion are up to and it rather takes away the mystery of things. It's an issue with third person omniscient narration, in that it's difficult to strike a good balance when telling an espionage story. You can't have your cake and it eat it as it were.

I think one of the main causes of the discontent that people have with the way the Alpha Legion are being portrayed in the heresy, is due to the inconsistencies that come about due to differing levels of ability among the authors. Take Dan Abnett for instance. The man is immensely talented and i would wager that most folks here would trust him with their life when it comes to writing their legion (Don't start with harshing on Prospero Burns, its a fantastic book. I'm sorry if you felt robbed because they didn't rehash the last 150 pages of A thousand sons with more beards). Legion, is a fantastically crafted, well paced novel that doesn't show its hand until well into the last one hundred pages. It's one of those rare works of fiction that actively rewards repeat readings.

Gav Thorpe, whilst not at all being a bad writer, for me tends to be a tad inconsistent with the quality of his writing. He wrote a trilogy of novels for warhammer fantasy based on the sundering of the elven race that were absolutely brilliant. In Deliverance lost, we get the sense that the portrayal of the Alpha legion is very journeyman, all the complexity and slow burning reveals that we see in Legion are gone. We have this shadowy group and they have a sneaky sneaky plan. A plan which is explained to us in detail pretty much from the off. The mystery is killed.

For those who have read 'Legion' you know that Mr A left us thinking; do any of the other HH series novels cover the Alpha Legion post the ending of the 'Legion' novel?
Oh I hope so!

Also,

You guys should read "We are One". Best AL story I've seen so far.

Yes it is, by John French.

Ah thank you, i shall pick that up. I like John French's stuff muchly.

I think BL should hire Karen Traviss for the next AL story. She just has a way with this kind of writing and making it feel suitably sci-fi, mystery and black ops.

Oh dear Lord in Heaven, no. Kol, we agree on a whole lot of things, I've noticed, but this is a horrible idea. See this blog post as to why:
