Color Scheme

I have played around with the idea of starting Space Wolves, but one concern of mine is the color scheme. I have read some of the fluff, and from what I can tell there can't be successor chapters because of the instability of the gene-seed, and they are just broken up into the 12 Companies designated by the shoulder pad. (At this point, feel free to correct me, I have not read the Codex this is just what I understand/have gathered)

I'm wondering what the fluff decrees as far as different armor color overall, are there any conditions where it would be acceptable, and if any how much of a variation?

If a Wolf Lord wanted to change his colors to sea green it's his prerogative and nobody in the Fang would care. (They may make fun tho, which will stop with sagas accumulated or by a severe beat down by the sea green clad wolf lord).

There are many options and reasons that are well addressed by those who posted already. Often times you will see people go with a darker grey colour that harkens back to the reported original colour scheme of the Rout pre-heresy. That's the colour I went with and the fluff reason I use. The practical reason is that I suck at consistently mixing paint colours so they are exact matches, (Not to mention that I have always thought the "powder blue" to be slightly effeminate ) so I went with Adeptus Battlegrey (Now known as Mechanicus Standard Grey, I believe) for simplicity and a more gritty feel.

The thing about this game is that it's your army, if you want to paint them Hot Pink with Lime Green trim, go for it. There are many who have done DIY chapters based of the wolves. Blood Wolves (they use a red and black colour scheme iirc) spring to mind as do the Iron Hounds (who use an orange and black scheme). Just do what ya want and have fun with the hobby =)

Aye, pick any color you want for your army, so long as you like how it looks at the end of the day.

With some sort of fluff, you can justify just about any of your armor color scheme. Except, of course, for bare metal and bare plastic. That's just lazyness and will not earn any sort of toast as the feasting hall.

In general, if you wanna be conservative, cold grays of any tints or shade will work without question. I've never seen reddish-gray or purplish gray on wolves, but I've seen slightly brownish WW2 German Grey, Wermatch mouse grey, Panzer Grey, and blue-grey on wolves.

Here's something that's been missed...

The Thirteenth(Cursed) Founding.

If you want to do your own Chapter then you can. It only states there are no known successors but there are no full records for what happened during the 13th that its basically there to give you artistic license over your army.

But, at the end of the day. It's your army and as you hang around the Fang you'll notice that there's a lot of individuality here and no one will beat you down for doing things your way (but don't quote me on that).

And hot pink with lime trim...gets me thinking...hmmm...oh damn, wrong forum...er...
