Horus Heresy Armies

No Foes Remain

Recommended Posts

Since reading Betrayal and BL's HH series I've been itching to start a HH army. Personally I plan to have a decent sized Ultramarine force with a smaller Sons of Horus force which I'll be able to play the Isstvan III missions and no doubt the future Drop Site Massacre missions.

The Sons of Horus will be first and will be no larger than 1,500pts and built over a while, since FWs prices are steep I plan to do both forces squad by squad and not bulk buy and bulk paint like I usually do. The Ultras I feel will be vastly larger and probably won't stop growing and fast become my primary army.

So I was wondering what everyone wants, has planned or started doing with the new HH rules out and how they will go about doing it.

If the gold guys' do come out, you shouldn't expect them until way later in the series, we're talking years, kind of depressing as they would be a cool force to paint up. I'm stumped on what I want to do still. I'm starting to read more of the HH series to get a glimpse, so far Emperor's Children and Death Guard seem pretty cool. But we'll see in time as I read more books
For me it has to be ultramarines, however I'm waiting for betrayal and I still haven't got it so I can't say how tempted I might be by one of the first four covered legions. I'm a bit hesitant to start my heresy ultras though because I think that there will probably be legion specific shoulders and if I'm going that way it's got to be all or nothing (I'm anal like that), so I may have to go sons of horus in the meantime. Or world eaters........Angron looks so fun to paint!!!
Heres the thing, The art work they are using as the base clearly shows not just the old stuff but the new stuff minus Mk7 armor. So if you didn't mind doing a mid HH force and converting Mk7 plate to Mk5 plate you can build a perfectly serviceable army with only a minimum of FW stuff. You would only need to buy things like Contempters, Primarchs and jetbikes.
I'm building up an Imperial Fists force. Decided to stick reigidly to a boarding action themed list so only infantry, dreadnoughts and Assault Rams allowed (that way I can force myself not to buy any of FW's lovely, but pricey vehicles like the Spartans and LR variants!)

@Febelcrofas: That was how I first started thinking, although it was either IF or Ultras then I saw the book, the models and the scheme and Sons of Horus it was.

Out of only FW models?

Good undertaking, but pricey!

Might as well go all the way, but I will take my time with them. Maybe get a squad or so every half-year. But atm I'm waiting for the Legion Specific squads to come out, then in the new year I'll start... hopefully.

Have been making my Great Crusade-era Thousand Sons for about a year now and will continue to do so! Looking forward to the books (particularly when the cover the XV Legion, of course though no doubt those flea-ridden, wolf-riding barbarians will also be in there :o) and new models though wondering how often I'll get a 30K game in my area.

I would wait for your legion to come out in the FW books before starting en mass

Almost every legion will be getting chapter specific sets, including helmets and torsos in addition to shoulder pads.

They already showed sneak peaks of the EC phonencian helm and DG spiky helm

Fortunately for me my main army happens to be covered in the first book( SoH) my other like said will most likely be last ( IF)

But I do fiend to also do Ultras,to the other guy,I'd make a 10-20 man tactical squad to prepare the forces numbers but I see a lot of cool stuff coming for GWs poster boys ,Ultima pattern helms and super Romanesque torsos.

I personally have only used FW resin figures since they came out for Badab two years ago,the only plastic I use these days are accessories such as grenades, pouches, and topknots.

I do not think I am ever really doing plastic marines for my personal army ever again, the Dark Vengence set I will probally sell once I finish it,to buy more resin

I am building my salamanders up slowly, as they will be entirely FW with a few exceptions. It will be a devestator company, so a couple of large tactical squads backed up by Whirlwinds, tank squadrons, rapier platforms, devastator squads , apothecaries and a couple of land speeders :o
My copy of the book is arriving tomorrow. I've originally planned to do Luna Wolves. I'll have to have a look and decide whether I'm willing to run it without the Legion specific extras. My back-up is World Eaters. It'll depend on how I feel following reading the book. I would like to run a loyalist army of one of the 1st 4 traitor legion (except Emperor's Children, not a fan of Purple).

I've been humming and ahhing for months between Emperors children or sons of horus after being inspired by the models of daemonprincedargor over in the wip forum. I got the book on gamesday and it was settled for me when I saw the justaerin models in the fw cabinet. I'm going for a fairly justaerin and cataphractii heavy list with low vehicle and model count due to expensive justaerin. Possibly 2 contemptors and definitely a couple of 20 man tactical squads

My initial list is roughly 2000pts worth, once I've refined it I'll be posting in the horus heresy forum.

I am wondering about starting a Night Lords army but always liked the look of Heresy era EC. NL will be in book 2 whenever that appears but I'm not sure I can pull off the colour scheme to my own satisfaction without spending hours on each figure, which puts EC back in the frame even if they are a bunch of arrogant big eds ;)

My biggest problem will be a lack of 30K games locally apart from the odd special event, so I'm wondering if I can build some sort of HH army by using the models with the upcoming chaos dex or at least find some way to incorporate them in a chaos army list? :teehee:

I am collecting an Emperor's Children army, going to be playing them with either FW or Codex:space marines.

I will need a lot more models to make my army legal. 5 tacticals and 5 assaults minimum.

That is before legion veterans, Breacher squad, Cataphractii, Destroyers, Fulgrim, possible some jet bikes.

Well, I had plans for a Scars HH army which have now been put on ice because of RL concerns and difficulties; I am unfortunately quite disapointed that recent events have forced me to miss the opportunity to order Brotherhood of the Storm since it apparently won't ever be a possibility according to BL (I'll give eBay a look but I guess I might have to go for 'underhanded' means this time...).

Having had some background planned for my desired force, I'm worried that BL might come up with something completely different that would invalidate it so have put ose ideas on ice. I've had little time available to dedicate to painting recently so am not too concerned with this additional wait anyway.

When me and my gaming group decide to do HH, I already narrowed it done to 3 potential armies: Imperial Fist- for the sheer reason of I play Crimson Fists and want to do the do the founding chapter (but plan onl lots of terminators and assault marines & added bonus my friend is playing IW); Emperor's Children- as a fan of Fulgrim and Slaanesh that is rating pretty high in my book (plus a second army lead by Lucuis); Alpha Legion- just cause they are sneaky and it would be awesome
I'm hoping for some Adeptus Custodes rules, in which case I'll include them as an ally or element of an Imperial Fists army for a Zone Mortalis army representing elements of the party that accompanied the Emperor in the attack on the Warmaster aboard the Vengeful Spirit. [fingers crossed]
