Vash
Hello. I have been thinking for a long time if I should get a Stormraven or not. The biggest issue I have with it is that I think it looks like a flying bus, or a landraider with wings strapped on it. My favorite GW aircraft for now is the Valkyrie and Thunderbolt. So I bought a Valkyrie and did what I could to make it look something like a Thunderbolt. Or course it still needs the transport capability, so the cargo hold is still there and big. The pictures are just from one nights work of building. Tomorrow or when I have time, I'll add some green stuff on minor places to close gaps, and add some details if needed. But for now I am tired and cant really think of more things to add. So any suggestions are welcome. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Grey%20Knights/preshotstorm1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Grey%20Knights/preshotstorm2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Grey%20Knights/preshotstorm3.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262441-converted-stormraven/ Share on other sites
Zeratul29
Thats a nice conversion :P But when I look at the side shot, something feels wrong, like it doesn't look as aero-dynamic(which I know doesnt really matter) But I don't know, thats just my personal $0.02 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262441-converted-stormraven/#findComment-3196887 Share on other sites
Vash
Thanks. Yah the side view isn't the best. I originally had plans for a device to hold a dreadnought. Hence the flat surface at the back. But my bits ran out and I actually forgot the dreadnought transportation device. To be honest. This flyer will have a bigger chance of flying than GWs versions. I am a pilot and from my point of view the Valkyrie and storm raven would never leave the ground. The Valkyrie for instans has its jet engines directed directly on to the tail plane. This will cause the aircraft to stall as soon as the engines ignites. Also both the Valkyrie an storm raven (mine too for that matter) have anhedral wings. These wings are given to aircraft with to much stability. I highly doubt these aircraft have any stability :P The wings should be dihedral (pointing up) instead. Where my version have arearo dynamic faults in the back, causing a lot of drag, the engines are at least in a position that won't stall the aircraft. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262441-converted-stormraven/#findComment-3197405 Share on other sites
nurglez
I love it from the front, but it does seem a bit off from the side. maybe if the wings were at the same angle as the tail booms, might make it look better (if you can decipher what I'm trying to say heh). Vash
Yah it looks a bit odd from the side. But it is not as bad in real life. I'll look into what I can do with it. Problem with adjusting as suggested is that the whole front will change and the surface under the wings will look odd if someone takes a closer look. Creamywynch
Has any one tried the chapterhouse conversion kit for the storm raven? Personally one of my issues with the storm raven is its boxy look which makes it look a bit like a flying cereal box. I think your conversion is cool but would fit more with a henchmen style army possibly (although boxy the sr still fits the space marine aesthetic quite well) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262441-converted-stormraven/#findComment-3198453 Share on other sites
Vash
Yah I do agree, it isnt as bulky as the space marine flyers usually are. And thats what I wanted to avoid really  Henchmen army is a long term project for me. I need to find suitable miniatures for it and probably convert alot. Vash
Painted the Stormraven, and the basic colors are on. I must admit I am not at all satisfied with it at all. I really dont like painting big areas with no real details. What I have left to paint is some more shades on the landing gear, and some minor details. I have no idea what else to do with it. But my painting motivation is pretty low atm. Hence the picture is really bad too. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Grey%20Knights/unfinishedstormraven2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Grey%20Knights/unfinishedstormraven1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262441-converted-stormraven/#findComment-3199842 Share on other sites

Circus Nurgling
Actually, that looks pretty good. Do you use an airbrush? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262441-converted-stormraven/#findComment-3199892 Share on other sites
Vash
Actually, that looks pretty good. Do you use an airbrush? Well sort of... ^_^ GWs skull white spray can :P Then I just added diluted seraphim sepia in all the gaps. Of course the dilitued wash did not perfectly go in the gaps without touching areas next to it, but that doesnt really matter as it gives a more "interesting" look. Now if one doesnt like pure white on the large areas. One could wash the whole surface with a very very diluted wash (seraphim sepia again I guess). I am going to try this out once I have bought my self another pot of GWs medium. If it turns out okey, I'll do it over the whole aircraft. The effect that it will give is that it wont be 100% white. Kierdale
I think it looks very, very good! I applaud your work and creativity. It'll look good in the table top, shouldn't cause any complaints from the opposition after a little explanation, should grab you a bit of attention and will stick in gamer's memories. Kudos! Vash
Thanks. Showed it to a friend of mine, and he said it was better than I gave credit for it. But he did agree that it feels like its missing something. Its really plain as it is now. Comparing to the other GK units where there is alot of minor details all over the place. Zeratul29
It looks really good, and I agree with you on the lack of aerodynamics of GW's models 100% Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262441-converted-stormraven/#findComment-3200422 Share on other sites

playedsincedaemonhunters
That is a really freaking good conversion, i particularly like the cockpit placement, i will say though, it almost looks more like a light strike ship than a gunship, i like the look more than stock raven though.
