Betrayal at Istvaan III (mini project)

Recommended Posts

Hi, thought I'd throw up some pics of something I've been working on this week to see what people think:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8041/8055941433_4d34c14b0b_n.jpg

I'm hoping that the armour looks dirty but looked after. I'm toying with adding some streaks of dirt from some of the rivets to suggest an extended campaign as this is a loyalist fighting on after the betrayal on Istvaan III. I know there's no written account of Death Guard Cataphractii in the HH books remaining loyal to the Emperor at Istvaan but I figured that doesn't mean there weren't any, after all there was a Dreadnought who did ^_^.

This is a one off mini that's part of a small group of Heresy era mini's I'm painting for a small display in my local Waterstones who are going to be doing a feature display on the Horus Heresy books.

anyway, comments and criticism are as always welcome,

thanks

James

Nice model brilliantly painted. I'm hoping to get a squad of these boys as heresy-era word bearers (yer another wordbearer army) - your model is not helping me spending lots of money at FW!

edit: ps - just a thought but I always imagine a chain fist would be pretty battered / paint missing etc due to the nature of it being smashed into tanks / bunker doors, etc.

thanks for all the comments guys,

@ T0MMY: hopefully the chainfist looks better now... As for not spending loads of money on FW stuff, my wish list for their stuff just keeps on growing as they keep releasing such amazing mini's... I curse and love them at the same time :).

@ Kierdale: I'm afraid this is only a one off mini but I am planning on doing a whole squad of Cataphractii in Iron Warriors colours in future.

@ Grotsmasha: thanks mate, I was a little dubious about the white to start with but with enough layers of paint it started to work ;).

@ Legio Draconis: I love the look of the Phobos pattern combi bolter too, looks a little more heavy duty than the current issue storm bolters :).

Update time, the Death Guard is now finished aside from his base:

I decided against adding streaks of dirt from the rivets as I thought that would be more indicative of lack of use rather than extended use of the suit and as I said before this marine has been fighting through the whole of the betrayal on Istvaan III (he managed to find shelter and survive the virus bombs and subsequent firestorm).

Having gotten the Death Guard finished I thought I'd make a start on another Heresy era mini, one of Horus' sons:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8317/8067311233_cdde7b383c_n.jpg

I tried to use a variation of the Sons of Horus scheme from this month's White Dwarf at first but it didn't work (you can still see the green on the backpack just now). Rather than strip the mini and start again I decided to try and fix it. So I'm going back over the armour plates with some Sybarite Green and I'll layer and highlight up from there... I think it's working, it's better than the green underneath it anyway so fingers crossed :D.

thanks

James

Next layer of green is done on the Son of Horus:

I'm starting to think this attempt to correct the previous paintwork might actually work!

@ Lorenzen: looking at the photos again I can see what you mean, the colours are pretty close, to be I would normally paint leather brighter but I wanted to keep it dark to complement the overall tone of the rest of the mini and I thought the darker leather would do this... I'll pay more attention to my colour choices next time ;).

thanks

James

Thanks for all your comments guys; photos of the now completed mini's can be found in my flickr photo stream and here. I've got parts on the way to build an Emperor's Children marine and a World Eater to round out the quartet of Legions Astartes present at Istvaan III. Soon as I get some work done on them I'll post them up.

@ Brother Kovash: The Cataphractii was a one off for just now I'm afraid, I could only afford to buy one from the pre-ordered ones available on eBay. I have plans to get more in future though so don't worry there will be more... ;)

cheers

Nice work so far, brother. I think some extra highlighting and a touch of wash on that SoH would do the model wonders, personally, but maybe I'm speaking too soon... ;)

How did you do that white and green colour? I was thinking of making a Death Guard army but sofar I can't find or think of a suitable white until I saw this one. Can you make a tutorial? that would be tremendously helpful since I already have 4 Cataphractii squads and 3 Tactical Squads waiting on my painting command. thanks in advance

Thanks for the comments guys;

@ Olisredan: The finished colour of the armour is in the Flickr Gallery, I decided to leave it that pale .

@ Chapter Master Onyxius: I've done a two part tutrorial on how I painted the Death Guard on my blog here. Hope that helps B).

@ Biohazard: The parts I was waiting on have arrived, the World Eater and Emperor's Children marines will be up soon...

thanks

Thought I'd put up a couple of WIP pics of the EC and WE marines on here and see what people think. They're almost finished now:

I feel I might need to 'redden' the armour of the Emperors Children marine a little though, I went with a more regal purple than the one that Forge World, or indeed Games Workshop have used on theirs as I feel it fits more with the feel that the EC have in the book series but I think it still needs a tiny bit more depth to it. I've deliberately kept the highlights on it subtle so as not to detract from the gold so I think a glaze of Baal Red might pull the armour into line.

I'm really pleased with the World Eater. The now that the blue's offsetting the white I think he looks much better. I think the flamer looks pretty good with a nice simple paint scheme too. I figured that the Legion wouldn't concern itself with things looking pretty, only functional so that's what I went with. I've free handed the Legion symbol on his pauldron but the photo I took was out of focus and it's now snowing outside so I'm not going back out to photograph just now...

comments and criticism is always welcome

thanks

James

amazing paintjob on the World Eater and Emperor's Children Marine. Though I have to agree with maby reddening the purple to give the gold more of a highlight, but other then that I like that. Hop eyou make aa new Sons of Horus, since Forge World released the painting guide and i will be using that colour scheme for my army

These guys are looking good, really like the off white you have on the World Eater and the way hes holding the flamer is awesome. As for the weather it's just slight flurries of snow down here but I hear its piling down up north.

They look really good even in the very small pictures. The contrasting blue and white of the WE matches very closely with the color plates out of the Betrayal book. I would suggest a little soot staining on his armor if you are feeling adventurous James and he will match the image I'm thinking of exactly. I'll pm you a picture of the page in the book tomorrow if you would like to see it. The EC photo is a little dark for my old eyes to make a comment on the shade of the purple. I think it contrasts nicely with the purple and looks very striking though. Take some giant pictures when you get a chance and email them to me if you still have the address, if not I'll pm it to you or give you my dropbox address and you can share them that way. You know how I like to hobby vicariously through your work. Keep it up.

Finally managed to complete the World Eater and Emperors Children Legionnaires last night:

So all four of the Legions present at Istvaan III are now complete:

I'vereally enjoyed building and painting these mini's but I'm not done with Heresy/Crusade era stuff by a long shot. I've got a few other bits and pieces planned and in the works and as soon as I can I'll get some posted up ^_^.

@ everyone who has commented thank you for all your comments. Also special thanks go to mikhail as without his generosity the World Eater and Emperors Children Legionnaires would have been a lot longer in the making.

For more images of the Death Guard and Sons of Horus Legionnaires check out my flickr galleries.

I'm hoping to add a Contemptor in the colours of an as yet undecided legion to this merry band at some point soon and I've got a few more Heresy era projects in the planning stages as well so as soon as I get anything off the ground I'll get some stuff up.

@ mikhail: I hope you're surviving the extreme weather over there alright. I'd love to see the image you're mentioning. I'll send you a PM later on .

@ Pulse: thanks mate. As I said above more Heresy stuff is planned :wallbash:.

@ Biohazard: thankfully the snow has cleared off again for just now . I'm glad the World Eater's pose looks good; getting him to hold that flamer at all was a complete pain in the ass!

@ Chapter Master Onyxius: Thanks mate. I've no more Sons of Horus planned just now but that's not a no to ever doing them again.

cheers

James
