bushman101
Well, I'm finally doing it.... I'm going power armor for Halloween. I've spent about $100 on materials and put a week of work (between 2 jobs) into my costume, and the progress is coming along fairly well. I'll post pics if there is any interest Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/ Share on other sites
Erluin
Nope, no interest here. Hey guys, nobody here is interested in power armour, right? LoL "any interest" hehe Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3199398 Share on other sites
Artemid
I'm planning on being a Chaplain to go with my friends' Commissar and Guardsman, because one of them found a really great axe for a Crozius. I'm totally not going to bother trying to do armor though (I also have to play a gig in it)... but I'd love pictures! I figure I'll just do black fatigues or robes and then cloak/tabard and skull mask, and appropriate seals and censors. It's mostly made from cardboard. The gun barrel and pistol grip is PVC pipe and the pump mechanism is from a piece of corragated gutter hose Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3199421 Share on other sites

The armor is made from foam/rubber mat I picked up from the hardware store (got it from the flooring section and was advertised as a 'anti-stress matt for feet). I first made patterns from paper and when I was happy with the shape, I trace and cut them from the foam. I used a needle and thread to stitch the parts together, then used a rubber/foam friendly glue to seal the seams Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3199428 Share on other sites
Ilbram_Harker
Thats for making the inside of the armour, right? TennisBall
Has anyone ever done a scout? I'd have thought that a lot easier to make. You can find it for yourself but do a search for R2D2 cosplay. There are some hilarious and interesting takes on the little guy out there. bushman101
Thats for making the inside of the armour, right? (shudders at thought of a skinny marine.) ;) I've never done this before so I'm not sure yet. That being said, I left myself room to 'fill out' the armor if needed. In the end, when it comes together and before I paint, I'm going to make some last minute adjustments based on how it looks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3201566 Share on other sites

It consists of a belt that attaches via velcrow. On the back is attached a flap to cover my...rear. in front is the cod piece that attaches/detaches via velcrow Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3201572 Share on other sites

The belt is actually a long strap I found at the store. The buckle is made from foam board glued on the foam/rubber I'm using. The base is made from cardboard (a used postal box). The spherical vents are made from these weird plastic drink containers I found. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/bushman010/space%20marine%20costume/IMG_20121015_222241.jpg My backpack is going to have a vent fan at the center. Taking this further, I made a circuit involving a vent fan that lights up via LEDs. Here's the test circuit at work ( I'm visualizing that the glow of the fan is the power plant in the pack working) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3209725 Share on other sites

Akylas
The finished bolter. I wish I could put more work into it, but I was spending too much time on it and not the costume Very interesting. Can't wait to see the final result. I've got some plans for a 40k costume for next year (not power armored, though that's a likely next step). Love the LEDs. Will the battery be hidden in the backpack? Here's some scroll tubes (aka: holy nunchucks) I'm working on. It's 2 pieces of PVC pipe capped at both ends, with eyelets screwed in and connected with chain That's what those are? Two years since I bought my first Space Marine and I've never figured out what the nunchuck looking things were. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3211044 Share on other sites

Artemid
I'm starting to put together my robed Chaplain. I think I might need to steal the idea for the scroll holders so I have more stuff to hang off my belt! Need to find something good for censers.... bushman101
Akylas - yes, the battery will be hidden in the backpack. The circuit will run off a small 9 volt battery that is easier to hide and much lighter. I'll show the circuit when it's mounted And yes, I'm pretty sure they are scroll tubes. Every pic I have seen with them seems to hint that's what they are for. Of course, holy nunchucks seem cool too ;) Artemid - steal away! I'm posting this to help others. For your censer, try finding a sturdy over sized Christmas bulb and drill holes in at regular intervals Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3211504 Share on other sites

bushman101
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/bushman010/space%20marine%20costume/IMG_20121017_134227.jpg Here's my shoulder pads I'm working on. They were a serious pain to make and plan out but they're about the size and curvature I need. For the pieces, I made a paper pattern (the shape inspired by a beach ball and a football) and made a paper version to make sure everything fit and curved properly. The pieces were stitched up and glued. The pads are a bit uneven, but the trim I glue on will hide these defects http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/bushman010/space%20marine%20costume/IMG_20121017_134302.jpg Here's my wrist guards. I just glued the cuffs on (foam board) and they are ready to paint Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3211510 Share on other sites
bushman101
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/bushman010/space%20marine%20costume/IMG_20121017_134408.jpg Everything is getting a few layers of Plastic Dip before I paint. Plastic Dip is a spray on rubber coating you can get at most hardware stores. I have several reason why I want to do this: Waterproofing (especially the stuff that contains cardboard)Consi Hides seams (makes the suit look seamless. Also helps coat and protect the thread I used to sew up things) Consistent texture Takes paint well Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3211521 Share on other sites
Artemid
I think a Christmas ornament or anything glass would be really really fragile. My co conspirator (going as a Commissar, who will have a Guardsman to execute all night) suggested wiffleballs. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3211606 Share on other sites
bushman101
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/bushman010/space%20marine%20costume/IMG_20121019_140220.jpg Here's the progress on the shoulder pads. I made trim from foam board and glued them on. I had originally planned to have the shoulder pads attach/detach via velcrow but they were way to heavy. I simply sewed them to my arm guards (had to use pliers to get the needle through) http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/bushman010/space%20marine%20costume/IMG_20121019_140230.jpg Here's how I'm attaching the backpack to the chest armor. I cut a hole in the back of my armor to allow my backpack to velcrow on both inside and outside the armor. It might sound insane to cut a hole in the armor, but it has several benefits. First, it keeps the backpack stable. The backpack won't wiggle much inside the slot. Also, this armor is extremely warm to wear (I found myself sweating when I was running tests) . The hole will allow for ventilation to keep cool ( and will allow my circuit fan to help cool me, rather than it just be a neat visual) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3213905 Share on other sites

I needed something to hold the battery to my circuit (9volt) so I made something from some spare PVC pipe. I glued some scrap foam on the bottom and rigged some rubber bands on the top to keep the battery from moving around to much once it's installed Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262631-making-a-space-marine-costume-for-halloween/#findComment-3213908 Share on other sites
