Burden of Duty

Just listened to it. Again, very good, albeit short (on a cd, will come with Gray Angel). Good that the Garro series is serving the purpose of letting us see glimpses of other parts of the HH setting that haven't got full books yet.

This one deals with

the Imperial Fists, Dorn, and his response to the Edict of Nikea. Also has an interesting sideline re the tension between Dorn as the high Marshall of Terra and Malcador as it's Regent. I think both Dorn and especially his sons come out of it enhanced.

Well worth a listen.

So any interesting spoilers?

Garro is infiltrating the Phalanx on Malcador's orders, left his bolter behind but still bearing Libertas. He fears that, if he was to be discovered, he might be forced to fight the loyalist Imperial Fists to fulfill his task, so he's all sneaky this time. He reaches a sealed chamber within the Phalanx, sealed by Dorn's own hands, and we get to hear about what's inside - the Fists' own Librarians, locked away after Nikea. They did accept this, however, but as we learn, they do not know about the heresy, and still long to rejoin the Great Crusade.

Garro enters and encounters the Libbies, which ends in a fight with the one he seeked, but they get interrupted by Dorn's arrival. The Librarian feels Garro's thoughts close to the surface, and offers Dorn to 'interrogate' Garro, after he refuses to tell Dorn about the Sigillite's orders.

Dorn first threatens to hold Garro captive on the Phalanx, since he doesn't approve of this type of subterfuge within the loyalist side, but they strike a deal: Garro would tell the Psyker, but only him, in private. It also seems that Dorn has come to terms with the truth of Horus' betrayal and reflects on the first meeting with Garro on the Phalanx.

In the end, the Librarian refuses Garro's offer to join him and the other Knights Errant, and Dorn basically reveals that he has his own reasons for keeping the Librarians prisoner, and that they are exactly where they need to be.

"They stand ready, close at hand, in the heart of my Legion. I will choose the moment, Death Guard. Not you, not Malcador"

Dorn acknowledges Garro's loyalty, though:

"You are a loyal son of the Imperium. My issue is with he who gives you orders. Your only error is that your loyalty might be misplaced.. or missused"

Rogal obviously has more than a little problem with Malcador..
