Purity Seal

Can I ask what other people use for varnishing their models?

I'm back in the scene after a couple years out and I've been using varnish from a jar, or lahian medium or 'ardcoat depending on what effect i want but recently purchased Purity Seal just for the convience of a good spray covering.

I spend a couple of weeks on an Abbadon conversion i'm quite proud of but i feel that the Purity Seal spray covering has almost lessened the paint job if that makes sense. Its dulled it down and theres almost a fine white film over the model.

Did i not shake the can enough or too close or too much or is this the general effect?

What good alternatives are there for matt or gloss finishes?

Thanks.

(What a stunningly dull topic for my very first post)

Sounds like it's frosted. This can be caused by spraying in humid conditions, and purity seal is very very prone to it.

I use an airbrush for varnishing (though a simple spraygun - badger or even the GW one would do). Windsor & Newton Galleria Satin, thinned with about 40% water and a dash of flow improver. Very nice finish, not too flat to ruin metallics, and not too glossy. The corresponding Matt version is dead flat, and knocks metals back a bit.

There are many reasons why purity seal will frost.

- you need to shake it up at least twice as much as any other spray paint

- it was too hot

- it was too cold

- the coat was too heavy

- it was too humid

- it was too dry

But the number one reason Purity Seal will frost: you are using Purity Seal.

I have used Purity Seal a lot and it will give a fantastic effect when it comes out right. I also use it as a top coat over brush on varnish. But I think I have finally ruined my last model with the stuff.

Thanks for that. I think it was a combination of cold (my painting setup is in my garage since the arrival of my second kid stole my study) and not shaking it enough.

I think ill test it out on a test model next time to see if im happy with the results.

This is a pic of the model in question; The purity seal has dulled down a lot of the paintwork.
