MaveriK
do you think great companies still have Skjald's? I only ask because even though the role of the Space wolves have changed over the centuries; especially that from a legion to a chapter, not much has changed in how the wolves operate and organize. If so then I could use one as either a chooser of the slain or a wound counter for my lord. -Volsung-
Berek Thunderfist had a Skjald in his Wolf Guard. Is he the wolf priest figure? Or just a marine that also plays the role of story-teller? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262707-skjalds/#findComment-3200373 Share on other sites

I believe he was just a member of Berek's Wolf Guard. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262707-skjalds/#findComment-3200391 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
Yes they do- it is in fact one of the many duties of the Rune Priests, and to an extent the Wolf Priests aswell. It's quite the responsibility! ~BtW Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262707-skjalds/#findComment-3200461 Share on other sites

What I meant was skjalds/remembrancers like Casper. And when did our Rune Priest and Wolf Priest take over a remembrancers role and why? Blacksad
I believe they still exist, but the only reason I have for believing that is the bits and pieces hinting at Casper still being around, much in the way of dreadnoughts' "pilots" are still part of the rout Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262707-skjalds/#findComment-3200755 Share on other sites

What I meant was skjalds/remembrancers like Casper. And when did our Rune Priest and Wolf Priest take over a remembrancers role and why? Did the Remembrancer groups fade away during the Heresy? I can't remember much talk of them in 40K fluff. And I think the Rune Priests always had the responsibility of being the keepers of the Lore for the Rout, I also seem to recall a piece about Fenrisians being unkeen about outsiders and Remembrancers in particular, I mean other Legions had entire detachments of Remembrancers with various different skills. Russ Brother 92
If you read A Thousand Sons it gives a pretty different view of how the Vylka Fenryka felt about remembrancers - it also shows a perspective of how others (mainly the Cyclops' sons) feel about them - in the present the Skjalds are Rune Priests but also any others in the chapter, for instance each new century (or perhaps it's millenium) Bjorn is woken so he can recount the sagas and stories of the olden days... Ezeriel
I believe in the the story Twelve Wolves by Counter there is one. It has a failed aspirant acting as a skjald, telling stories to a room full of space wolves while they're eating and drinking. It is indeed - not sure if he's a failed aspirant but he's a simple old Thrall of the chapter acting as Skjald - pages 209-237 - it's in the Legends of the Space Marines omnibus :) he's telling them all the cautionary tale (which gives quite a bit more info on how the 'Reign of Blood' by Goge Vandire (ecclesiarch/high lord of terra) affected the Space Wolves in particular... Growler67
I believe they still exist within the Fang. There are times when aspirants would have instruction that isn't being plugged into the "learning engines" or under the direct supervision of Cadre. I beleive there are times when they are told the Sagas of the Fang as well as that of the what it means to be a Space Wolf. It would provide a bridge from the life they once knew and the rituals and practices of daily live in their home villages and the 'new world' they are being indoctrinated in as that of a Son of Russ. The litanies would be explained, the reasons things are the way they are now compared to the way they used to be as simple villagers,....now they are Astartes. Gap bridgers from village folk of Fenris to becoming Space Wolves. They are much like the Bondsmen and other servants within the Fang that serve the other functions within. They serve the function to tell the stories and relate the Sagas and Litanies until the Aspirants are assigned t a Great Company, at which time that function is performed by the Rune Priests and Wolf Priests. It dosn't mean that the contribution to the human Skjalds is done, they continue to serve the Sons of Russ in a capacity that keeps with the honor of the Sagas. Perhaps when they do not have Aspirants to retell the stories to, they are tasked with maintaining the records, or taking care of those ancient ones deep within the Fang whilst retelling the Sagas to them as a prayer or chant so that the Ancient ones are kept calm in their slumbers whilst their memories are being maintained as they listen from within their sarcophogus to the stories they recall when they are awake.
