Lucius the Eternal

Recommended Posts

Hello Brothers!

This post is more or less exactly what it says on the tin. I have been participating in a challenge from my local hobby centre to take any model released with the new Chaos range and to turn it into something different. This model will also feature in a competition in three weeks (once I've painted it :S) at that same hobby centre.

The model I chose to change was the aspiring champion model which is absolutely stunning. One of my favourite minis to date. Accordingly I wanted to create something special. When considering this in the store my eyes fell upon the newly released finecast version of Lucius the Eternal and fond memories came up of me and my best friend making our own versions of the Eternal Swordsman upon the release of the last chaos edition. From then on it was settled. This is the result of my work since Saturday...

The model is finished apart from one or two details and ofcourse the battle-drug pumping back-pack of doom! I was inspired by the new artwork for Lucius in the new Chaos Codex where the arm which bears his Lash of Torment appears to be more of a mutation than a weapon. I liked this idea and set about grafting the details onto the aspiring champion model which has a pose which says 'I've just seen Garviel Loken! I'm gonna eat you alive!!!!' Fitting given that it was Loken who first blemished that now messed up face. Incidentally I intend to paint his scars rather than sculpt them.

Hope you guys like my take on the old Swordsman :) I'll post another picture when the last details are done and during/at the end of the painting stage

very impressive! really like this a lot, though I'm not sure the head really suits Lucius, if you were able to get ahold of it, an awesome head to really finish off your fantastic sculpting work would be Shadow Captain Korvydae's head, probably not needed, but I do think it'd really complete the incredible job you've done with the rest of the miniature

Chaplainmikey: Hello again Mike :P Man I have too many projects going haha The judging for this competition is on the 27th I believe so it will be before then. As for pink or purple, exclusively neither. I planned to go with the scheme described for Lord Commander Eidolon in Reflection Crack'd of sickly rich purple and electric blue chevrons. Vicious violets and reddish pinks and indeed rich reds for the mutation. I hope I can paint the image I have in my head :P

Amulius: Cheers man. That means alot :)

Blindhamster: I wanted to use that head! Though time and funds limited me to my bits box this time around I'm afraid. I know what you mean about the head. I hope to reduce the discord when it comes to painting (at least where the head is concerned haha oh Slaanesh)

Outstanding! Seriously! I love your take on him. I really dont like the original model, I don't feel it fits his fluff. The new aspiring champion does look cool standard as well. Can't wait to see this guy painted.

It's going to be interesting to see if you can pull that off on a model of this scale. I'm not doubting your painting skills, more wondering if so many colours will fit on one model without it looking too chaotic ( if such a thing can be said for Lucius).

If it works then I can see this being the first model I will have seen that really goes all the way with the variety of colours and patterns that EC are supposedly famous for.

Really excited now, get painting! <_<

Mike.

Agree with all fellow posters on just how awesome a job you've done here. It would seem we have a similar view on model height too. I mercilessly hack off anything mounted on shoulders/above the head, in order to put the width back in the shoulders, ala Lucius' drug vials. *applauds* Not to detract from your superb sculpting skills one jot, but for me this is what makes the biggest difference to this model.

It would be cool if you could find a way to get them on the model somewhere. As of yet I haven't been able to find a way to do this justice.

He really should be the official model. Incredible work! Really, really great pose, I like the face sculpts too.

My only qualm (I think the head will come out fine, though indeed Korvydae's head would rock) is that I'm not sure the sword is exotic or ornamental enough.

Hey Brothers,

Thanks for the comments :)

Rhetoricus: The drug vials (combat stimulants) have yet to be added but don't worry they'll make an appearance :) I've been pretty swamped with Uni work and the Heresy Marks tutorials. I'm gonna finish Lucius and get some paint on him in a few days :)

Rune Priest Ridcully: The sword is the Tartaros pattern terminator sword which has been curved with a hair dryer and cut a little bit to make it look more like a sabre. As for how I do it... what can I say? How do you tie a shoe lace? You just do it :P I guess I could point out that the screaming faces are actually really easy. You just scrape away some of the leg or shoulder plate and rebuild it with green-stuff. Before it sets shape the faces into the new plate so it will keep the shape of the marine armour. The chest plate is all green stuff, it's only the back which is plastic. The whip was an interesting test though. It's just a paper clip which I covered with a fairly thick sausage of green-stuff which I then cut into, to make a pattern which wraps around itself.

(edit) Artemid: Indeed you are right Artemid. I long pondered the sword I would give my Lucius and eventually I decided that while the Laer sword would be brilliant, he probably wouldn't have it. He has died so many times, only to respawn as another guy. I reckon he lost his laer sword. Besides the profile is just a power weapon, which further adds to my assumption.

Thanks again for such positive response :)
