Thunderwolf Calvary as allies?

Hey all, I'm a BA player and really love the thunderwolf calvary. I was thinking about getting some of them to take as allies. I know nothing about space wolves so I was just looking for some input from those who do! Do you guys think it'd work taking them for competitive games?

Competitively, from my understanding it is more beneficial for Wolves to take BA allies than for BAs to take Wolves. I don't have any mathhammer to support it, but a lot of chatter in the BA forum regarding allies when 6E was released was that BA isn't lacking any niches that the SW are, referring to Death Company assault squads. That said, competitive or not, TWC are a lot of fun and almost always grant a sense of fear and urgency to remove from the table when your opponent sees them.

TWC are expensive, and when taken as allies, you'll need an HQ and a troopchoise aswell. I don't know how many points you're willing to spend on allied forces, so I'll offer 2 suggestions:

low point cost: Canis and a fenrisian wolf pack

high pointcost: full Grey Hunter pack with plasmaguns, Standard, MotW, Power Axe, and a TWLord

for the TWC itself, 3 bodies, 1 shield, 1 Thunderhammer seems like the way to go to me.

If you want an inexpensive(I refuse to say "cheap") and cheerful TWC ally -

1 Wolf Guard Battle Leader in Power Armour - Bolt Pistol; Frost Blade; Wolf Tail Talisman; Thunderwolf Mount

1 Thunderwolf Cavalry - Plasma Pistol; Close Combat Weapon

1 Thunderwolf Cavalry - Storm Shield; Thunder Hammer

5 Grey Hunters Pack - Flamer

Total Roster Cost: 395pts

The Grey Hunter pack is the required Troops choice, so kept minimal to allow for you TWC. It's still useful as a supplemental objective camper with a Flamer and Counter-attack.

The TWC unit can be expanded with up to 2 more models and still keep the entire Allied Detachment under 500pts. Three TWC are effective, while five can be scary.

I think SW make great allies for BA JP lists

The problem with the BA codex is that there isn't anything that can handle elite assault units or Death Stars. DC die to the same things Asssault Marines die too, Sang Guard don't have an invul save and risk getting shot up by Plasma while TH/SS Terminators are too slow. TWC (with storm shields) allow you to deal with stuff without having to chuck all your precious (troops) jumpers at it.

The other (compulsory) units are good too - Rune Priests give you psychic defence, and Grey Hunters a solid midfield objective sitter.

Stormshields are expensive though, I'd suggest 1 in every 3 models of Cavalry

I would disagree, I run with a pack of 3 TWC and 2 shields and I get their points back every time. Just put the shields in front and your guy with the special weapon in the back. So even if they do pick off one TWC you'll have another guy to continue taking the shots while your special weapon goes to town.

The BA lack

Psychic defence

a rounded Troop choice like GH assault marines lack shots tacticals attacks

cheap split firing devastators like long fangs
