Advice wanted from people that paint but don't play

Hi guys, first post but been lurking for a while

I have been painting for a long while (Space marines usually) but have no interest in playing the game. So once they are painted I have very little use for them and now have marines all over the place collecting dust.

I am just wondering what others do that just paint. I was considering putting things on ebay just to get rid of them and recoup some costs, but have no idea what people expect in terms of quality (magnatizing/bases/weapons). Was also thinking of a diorama of sorts, but then i still have them laying around collecting dust.

I'm just looking for an alternative to putting them in the bin

Whaa? The bin?! :P

For god's sake, man, throw them on Ebay! At least you'll get some money back from them! If you do stick them on Ebay I would say to you to be frank and honest. Provide pictures so that these models can clearly be seen - people very much appreciate honesty and can't legitimately complain after they've bought them if all of the flaws (if there are any) are in plain sight.

Oh, uh, hail and welcome to B&C, btw. :)

Edit - Typo.

Yeah defiantly ebay them if your looking for a little cash back. If your just looking to get rid of them you could always take them to your local hobby shop/club and give them away (much better than putting them in the bin!). Obviously as a gamer, collector and painter I'm interested in what you have to offer would you be able to post up some pictures of your Marine models for me us to looks at?
Ebay. If you're a long time (learned a trick or 2) painter you may end up doing commissions / getting requests, which can be fun, as you get to be creative with things without all the tedium of actually playing the game, lol. Makes the hobby pay for itself too, which is nice.

Have you considered entering some of your better pieces in painting competitions? Golden daemon and the like?!

I've seen well painted models going for A LOT on ebay. You could actually make some money if they are up to scratch!

I would suggest posting up your miniatures here so everyone can admire your work and they you can give the nod when your ebaying them to give people the chance?

As winterdyne has said you may get some love and people will pay you to paint for them. Or an alternative would be to ask for some models which you'll paint in your time and return to the sponsor?

I often strip and repaint miniatures a bunch of times actually, but I agree at least trying to sell them on ebay would be worth it if they are just sitting around and you have no use for them. I don't paint fast enough to really have to worry about this problem much!

Thanks for the reply guys.

The reason I am unsure about ebay is because I have just been painting what I think looks nice, no idea if it will be any good for someones army. I will post the list below. Its mostly Salamanders as i thought the lore behind them was pretty cool. But now I want to paint some Space wolves as they have some really cool looking unique units, something Salamanders lack.

I tried stripping them before using a dettol method I saw somewhere. Results weren't very good so i cannibalized the parts for other models..

And competitions, i actually have no idea about them. What sites host them?

I will try and post some pics on Sunday when I return home, see what people think.

Unit list.

Tactical squad. 1 flamer, 1 melta (i think, maybe its plasma, cant remember offhand)

Devestator squad. 2 plasmas, 1 heavy bolter, 1 melta, and a commander with a power fist and some hand pda looking thing

Assault squad. Chainswords and pistols, cant remember what the commander has

Terminator squad with hammers and shields

Venerable Dreadnought. Right arm is detachable with all 3 options, left arm has the claw thing and heavy flamer (the only thing on the list not painted with an airbrush, so has some mild brush strokes)

Land speeder storm (Really proud how this turned out, looks really cool)

Home made Sternguard using bits from forgeworld heresy armour, and a whole host of other bits from other box sets, including the commander set (only reason i bought the commanders)

Vulcan he'stan

2 commanders

Rhino

I have a bunch of other stuff unpainted but might keep them by for spacewolves

All units have forgeworld Salamnder shoulder pads including terminators, and the Rhino has forgeworld Salamander conversion bits

firstly - welcome to b&c

secondly - bin!!!! what!!!! are you crazy??!?

ebay at the minimum

i like to play but rarely get the chance so usually paint, even things i may not actually ever game with. i have sold a few bits on ebay when i've done with them and got some of the cost back for the models or even just traded models with others either for new or used models/bits that i then painted over/intend to stirp.

Seems ebay is the way to go. I will put some images up when i get home on Sunday/Monday and see what people think of them. How do you guys usually go about it? I have painted what I listed above, but also a bunch of other stuff I intend to get done quite soon. Do you usually put up something as soon as its painted, or is it better to wait until entire sets are done and put them all up?

Also i forgot to ask in my last post, but are the units I listed viable for someones army who plays?

@Olisredan. Is the power spray the oven cleaner stuff? I read about that method, but also that oven cleaner is quite corrosive to your skin so didn't try it.

And im from London Bymis. Lots of gameworkshops here, but only been in there to pick things up. Never played or really socialised with anyone in there. Also have no friends that are interested in this stuff so I usually stick to painting in my cave and letting the things mount up.

It's up to you. You could post up wip pics of each and every mini, if you wished.

It is. The green spray bottle. But the stuff isn't corrosive - or at least not as much as Dettol. I've found that with Dettol your skin gets slippery as the top layer is removed by the Dettol. I've yet to have that happen with Fairy Power Spray. Also - Fairy Power Spray smells a hell of a lot better than Dettol does.

Other oven cleaners may be corrosive, mind you, but you might as well exercise caution and rinse your hands every now and again when using FPS.

I'm much the same, I paint lots of stuff but never really game.

Try to find some comps to enter and get to know some painters from there, it's a real challenge to improve your techniques!

Thats something that is making me want to get rid of my Salamanders. I took such a liking to them in the beginning and have learned so much. But now I am painting things much lower than my ability just to keep consistant with my earlier Salamanders. And probably not learning a great deal more because of this.

If I were to start again I would have a totally different sceme with all the airbrush skills I have gained, as well as buying paints outside of the Citadel range and pigments. Probably I should go to my local GW and meet some people, they have always been really friendly when I was shopping there. Hopefully meet fellow painters.

I should have realised a long time ago that since I dont play, there is no need at all for me to stick to one army.

I think i will leave stripping as my last option, better to try and put them in the hands of someone that will have use for them, and hopefully put some funding towards getting new minis.

@Bymis. If you like what you see when I get pics up, lets talk then.

@puck. Already painted as Salamanders. The list I posted is whats already done, not what I intend to paint ;) Doubt they coud be passed off as DA as they all have forgeworld Salamander shoulder pads.

Sign up over on Platoon Britannica and CoolMiniOrNot if you haven't already. They're paint-centric forums and you'll find a lot better advice and inspiration as well as exposure to minis from a very wide range of manufacturers there.

Joke thread?

This is a non-issue. Just keep painting the best you can and add to the army, then once the oldest pieces start to look out of place strip and repaint those instead of painting new stuff.

That works for me.

Stripping seems wasteful. Unless it's a rarer model then sell your older paintjobs and replace them with newer ones. Let someone else get some pleasure from them. It also gives you the opportunity to update the poses because I'm guessing your modeling skills have improved along with the painting.

Do you have a glass display case to keep the dust off finished models?

Undar,

if you want to pick up cheaper models, Dark Sphere are in London as well near to Waterloo Tube/rail Station, the guys in the LGS are really friendly and they have a full set of paints from different suppliers (Vajello, P3 & GW) as well as modes at 20% off GW standard retail prices.

As to what to do, ebay is good, you will get a decent return or even a profit back, especially if you make people aware of the fact theres lots of FW goodies amongst the normal marines.
