Please assist - marble effects

I couldn't find if this has been asked or whether a tutorial is in place; I want to paint the force staff of one of my Aspiring Sorcerers in a marble effect. Currently the staff pole has been based with Night Blue (Vallejo Game colour), but I am at a loss from there. I'd need a lighter colour certainly to contrast, so I was thinking of something like painting very thin lines of grey, or a green around the staff, then using a gloss varnish to give it a glassy shine. Any advice appreciated.
