IronKobra
Hi All, I am just about finished with another model, but I am having problems with the Vallejo Matt Varnish. Now I have put a layer of Vallejo Gloss down from an airbrush, waited for it to dry for a day or so, then applied a layer of matt, but I am finding the Matt varnish is still drying pretty glossy. Now I have used this method before when I painted up a Gabriel Seth last year and it worked fine, so I'm a bit unsure as to why it's not having the desired effect this time around. Anyone got any tips, like mixes with water or anything to get this Matt varnish to dry with a matt finish? Seahawk
Use GW Matt :). Everything I get from Vallejo is glossy, so I just avoid the line like the plague, it does me no good. winterdyne
Shake it. Shake it until you hurt, then as long again. Vallejo paints tend to settle a bit. Here is the model in question, you can see it is pretty dang glossy despite 2 coats of matt varnish from an airbrush http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab36/IronKobra84/LtgSgtGloss.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263437-vallejo-matt-varnish-is-glossy/#findComment-3214351 Share on other sites
winterdyne
Yeah it shouldn't be that shiny. And yes, the matt varnish in particular needs the snot shaking out of it. Also, apply THINLY. It's a good idea to thin it down with a little water too. IronKobra
Thanks dude... I will try shaking the living crap out of it and try again tomorrow. I have been thinning it down, I tried first with water and it was still glossy, so tried with airbrush thinner and still no luck... but I will carry on and get it to work come hell or highwater! And when it does I'm going to try OSL on the powerfist for the first time Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263437-vallejo-matt-varnish-is-glossy/#findComment-3214543 Share on other sites
Captain Hwarang
Matt varnish from a bottle is insanely matt to my eye. I highly recommend giving that a try.So, I mean to say use a brush. -CH Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263437-vallejo-matt-varnish-is-glossy/#findComment-3214599 Share on other sites
irwit
agree, the vallejo matt varnish is almost too matt for me. Im looking into finding a balance. Somethings not right if thats vallejo matt and still looking so shiny. IronKobra
Matt varnish is finally cooperating, can nearly call this dude finished! http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab36/IronKobra84/LtdSgtMatt.jpg Thanks Winterdyne for the tip... I shook the hell out of the bottle and mixed it with water and is coming up much better ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263437-vallejo-matt-varnish-is-glossy/#findComment-3216317 Share on other sites
winterdyne
No worries. I found the W&N Galleria varnishes to have a much better suspension (requiring less er, 'vigorous' shaking); they seem fairly thick in the bottle but they do actually level very well. My preferred brand at the moment. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263437-vallejo-matt-varnish-is-glossy/#findComment-3216810 Share on other sites
