Thousand Sons project

So I finally have started painting up these guys. I finished the Sorcerer and his Disc of Tzeentch.

Also some fen beasts that I converted into animated molten metal monsters (counts as obliterators).

I also painted up some flamers of Tzeentch. I assume showing daemons is kosher...

  • 5 weeks later...

I decided to sculpt my own Daemon Prince. I'm using the wings from the Isle of Blood griffon for him.

I was going to use the griffons head but then I decided it would be a challenge to try sculpting the head myself.

There are also some pictures of a painted squad of converted Thousand Sons and the squad sorcerers and standards.

Just Wow, brilliant paint work, makes me want to strip and repaint mine..again. How did you do the sculpting? I have been thinking of trying my own daemon prince, but not sure how to do it, though I was kinda hoping to go for a similar look (ie giant in power armour, jackal head, staff/halbeard in one hand, other gesturing, possibly wings or a giant disk/throne.

For the Daemon prince I started with a 'skeleton' made of styrene rods. I then bulked it out initially using Milliput. For the details I used greenstuff.

I wanted to do a Daemon Prince that actually looked like he is wearing power armour.

For the most part I'm happy with the armour and its just a question of adding maybe a few small details to finish it off.

I was wondering if the head turned out okay of if I should try again?

To be fair, I have said if any model in the gaming club ever actually gets daemonic ascension, I will come to the next one in a tiger onesie as a joke :D Still a really nice model, were you thinking of sculpting spawn? I've been thinking of trying it myself and was thinking of making a "sculpt a spawn" thread in the chaos ascendent.

So any advice on starting sculpting in general?

@ Rune Priest Ridcully

Back when I first started playing Thousand Sons in the days of 3.5 (goes misty eyed) I used Tomb Kings Ushabti as my spawns. So I'm still using them.

If I were to make some new spawn I would probably get a box of Milliput and go for making some that are more like the old Horrors. I would use the Milliput to form a blob shaped body and then add lots of tentacles, eyes and mouths with greenstuff to create some kind of amorphous horror that Cthulhu would be proud of :)

@ Galloway

Under the previous Codex I was using the generic daemons unit entry to represent cultists. For the cult leaders I got the plastic Empire wizard box. There are plenty of great wizardy bitz in that box and the head I used for my new Sorcerer came from there. I believe its the Light Wizard head or possibly the lore of Metal.
