Ultramarines responding to distress calls outside Ultramar

According to Lexicanum 40k the Forgeworld Graia is located in Segmentum Tempestus. Why would the Ultramarines honour the distress call as they are so far away and surely there must me other Chapters much closer by?

Do the Ultramarines not stick mainly to the Eastern Fringe or do they have roving groups ready to assist?

I am just curious from a fluff perspective.

Cheers,

I have no ironclad assertion to offer, but I would wager it involves a train of logic or lack thereof that saw the introduction of Khornate sorcerer Chapter Masters to the IP. B)

Also, poster boys.

While it is off the normal track for the UMs, there's nothing actually tying most Chapters to a specific sector or Segmentum. Unless they are created for that specific purpose, most Chapters do what they want, make war where they please.

I always kind of assumed there was some type of 'vetting' process going on in that intro, which goes through all the parameters of each chapter, i.e; which are the closest? which are the best suited for this job? which have the tools ready at that exact point in time to go in?; which chapters are not currently engaged elsewhere?

All of this information would be analysed and the best match would be dispatched; in this case it was the Ultramarines ;)

That's my fluff answer, the real-life answer is just because they wanted Ultramarines to save a Titan :)

It was a single Strike Cruiser that happened to be in the area. Just like all other chapters, the Ultramarines respond to threats all over the galaxy, not just in their own Segmentum or Ultramar. When the distress call went out, they simply were the quickest to respond and get there to delay the Orks while the rest of the reclamation force made its way there.

The Ultramarines Legion added more worlds to the Imperium during the Great Crusade than any other Legion, and they spent the years following the Horus Heresy gluing the entire Imperium back together while the other Loyalist Legions were recovering from the Heresy. As a result, the Ultramarines have ancient oaths of honour with worlds all over the galaxy to come to their aid as their distantly remembered saviors/heroes/founders/whatever.

They could have been way over near Graia having finished responding to one of those worlds under their protection, and then Graia came under attack and they just happened to be the nearest force available.

All of these explainations are good fluff!

However, Ultramarines were originally put in as a place holder in the game, and they were just never swapped out. Which would explain a lot of un-Ultramarine behavior. I think the character would have been much better suited for the space wolves, but maybe the general population is not ready for a power armored Scotsman!

If you read the 40k wiki you will see that they didn't even use the existing captain of the second company, Cato Sicarius.

So yea the game cut a few corners when it came to fitting into the lore, but it was still tons of fun!
