True Scale Space Wolves WIP

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow wolves.

Been lurking on the outskirts of the forum for a while, and with my latest 40k project I though it would be a fine time to join your fine forum

I hope that am posting this in the right place, otherwise feel free to lecture

Its a while since I played 40k but with 6th edition I wanted to get into the game again. It seems more and more true-scale space marines are popping up across the web and the idea really stuck with me, and what better excuse than to start over with a new army.

So here ist is. My Vlka Fenryka in their true-size

First off the Wolf Lord.

Meet Lord Krake

Rolf Krake is a mythical High King from danish folklore, said to carry a sword called Skofnung. Any wound caused by the sword would never heal, and apparently it couldn't be drawn in front of woman... But as far at modeling goes I though a Thunderhammer would stand out more, with the added bonus of instant killing any none-eternalwarriors in his path..

Blood Claws

So far its my new army consists of around 50 truescale marines

I'm working on including scouts as well, although I can figure out how to properly represent them. Perhaps regular scouts models would do the trick without looking to be totally out of place

Anyway hope you like the looks, comments are welcome and I'll be posting progress as it gets along.. Now where did I put the paint brush...

Yes the Truescale kits from Chapterhouse really made it easy to scale the marines up. (my green stuff tills are nonexistence)

I used a few bits from scibor miniatures as well, and used one of their celtic suits for the rune priest

Here is a painting test mini, as well as some size comparison

Here is t2o Grey Hunters, side by side with a blood angel (borrowed from a friend), as well as an imperial guard and a native fenrisian

For once I had a weekend without plans, so I had the time to get some painting done.

Well I could have painted even more, but the new Xcom game got in the way. And as someone who can remember the original game from the 90's it was a blast.. And on the plus side I could name all my squad members after space wolves characters.. :P

Anyway.. On with the pictures

Wolf Lord Krake

I like long walks on the beach, and purging the enemies of the allfather...

Fluffwise I though it would be fun to base my space wolves around either The Great Scouring, or the MK32-33.

The space wolves never struck me as the chapter which got all the cool new toys at once, but placing the wolves further back in the timeline it makes sense using older bits of amour, while still having the option of including a newer mark armour here and there. And since this is way back in the timeline I can feel free to make up my own wolf lord and markings (which is still very much WIP)

Just the Wolf Priest

S1270004.JPG

Ulm, the wolf priest, stalks the wilds of Fenris looking for warriors of skill and bravery to join the sky warriors. When fighting with his great company he often leads a pack on the hunt for enemy weak points, sneaking around flanks to assault the weak spots of the enemy battle-lines where it could hurt the most.

Gamewise Ulm is running the saga of the hunter, leading a 10 man pack of grey hunters and a wolfguard

Rune Priest - Still not done

what models do you use for the natives?

They're LoTRs models - I can't honestly remember which but am sure they're now OOP as I can't find them on GWs site.

they are Dunlending Warriors, which can be found under the Isengard tabs.

WLK

I stand corrected :) - either way they're brilliant models to represent our fenrisian brethren.

trust me, it took me a bit to find those guys, and i play LotR.

i always wanted to start a army of them, but they are all pewter and i aint made of money. shame.

WLK

Yes they are indeed Dunlending Warriors from LoTR model range. I have about 10 of them with various wargear, just to look cool, and they look a lot more viking-like than the Rohans..

But I'm not sure about so many big rocks under the feet of regular troops. Some of those are in a little unbalanced poses.

Totally agree. I bought a bunch of pre-made bases. The idea being that if the bases themselves were shaped with rocks/stones/texture I only needed to paint it, give it a wash and perhaps add some snow flock - easy enough. But as your keen eye observed some of the models are off-balance. I hope that it will become less obvious when the bases are painted with GW's current texture paint, and given some flock just to be sure..

In regards to the Dunlending warriors, I'm toying with the idea of using them as part of a prelude to a small campaign for some friends.

Using the necromunda rules, small bands of fenrisians battle each other and some are eventually taken by the wolf priets.

One of the "gangers" chosen eventually ends up as a wolfguard, with added speciel rules (of which there will be 3)

The wolfguards will form the HQ chose of small 500 points armies, which are handed over to 3 friends and set against ork armies in a small campaign to introduce the rules for 6th edition, and also just for fun.

Again this is just an idea but it would be fun to center the first game around plantstrike, then having the players chose where to place their their small forces a map, each location could have different outcome. Example if they don’t defend the armory the orks gets lootaz..

The wolves came out to play and wanted to post a few (bad quality) pictures of it

A friend called me and said his 2000 points tau bid from ebay had arrived, and if I had time for a game.

It just so happens that I had meet a new IG "player" (who haven’t played his first game yet) and we had talked about introducing him to the game

Seeing the chance to do a combo I suggested that I and the IG player both made an 1000 points army, but that mine would be build using the rules for allies.

When the IG player showed up it turned out to be Catachan

he was collection.

So it was "Real men Vs the greater good"

My 1000 points

Wolf Priest - Sage of the Hunter

5 Wolf Scouts - meltagun

10 Grey Hunters - Drop Pod

10 Grey Hunters - Outflanking

10 SkyClaws

6 Long Fangs

The plan was simple. The deep striking grey hunters was going after armour, while the scouts and the outflanking grey hunters would be able to put further pressure on the tau lines, maybe kill a hammerhead or a suit or 2.

Tau Deployment

S1270014.JPG

Long Fangs - The only unites that I deployed at the starter of the game was the long fangs and the skyclaws. Normally only 50% of your army can start in reserve but since I was technically allies of the IG we ruled it would be ok for me to have 4 units in reserve

S1270017.JPG

Grey Hunters deep strike and wast a razorback. Yeah the tau player had brought his own allies, the boys in blue

S1270021.JPG

But sadly two can play that game. Commander farsight deepstrikes behind the long fangs and while loosing his bodyguards he continued to be a pain in the rear.

S1270022.JPG

S1270030.JPG

Then I outflanked the Grey Hunters and that unit ended up being the only troop unit claiming an objective (we played crusade)

S1270026.JPG

The Wolf Scouts came in right behind a Hammerhead... and missed with the meltagun

As the tau heavy weapons where busy going after the Heavy weapons and tanks of the IG, only "small armes fire" hit the scouts, Killing 3 (including the meltagun)

The Guardsmen Marbo appeared, threw a demolishing charge that killed a devilfish and took a hullpoint of a Hammerhead, which already had one Hul Poins down... aaaand killed a scout - The lone scout then used a krak grenade and broke the Hammerhead, hough I suspect he will force Marbo to eat a grenade after the battle... Veregeld and all :o

S1270028.JPG

The Skyclaws makes it to the tau line (onlu because the suits where busy killing guardmen) and then eats up the Tau scouing units, before the last is gunned down by a Broadside-suit

S1270077.JPG

Being two on the same side worked great. I used my units offensively and talked the IG player through his options and how to do stuff, while still leaving control of his army to him. He may had made a couple of mistakes and "bad" calls, but it was his models to play. All in all it was fun

Post-Game

Seeing how much fun the IG player had leaning the game, and trying out his own list made it a very good game. Our tau opponent is a great levelheaded gamer, and the game looked to be very close up until turn 4.

After the game was ower (2-0 to the imperials: First blood and one objective) the IG player had clearly gotten a taste of the game and was eager to sit down and take a new look at his models, now knowing how they worked and what worked for him.
