Collecting a Legion - Help with lore?

I always wondered who the other two legions and their Primarch's were and with the release of new Chaos models I have decided to collect my own legion (for gaming purposes, but more for bragging rights).

I was planning on making them sort of anti-Heroes (Like the Night Lords in some ways, but never fully aligned with Chaos) but it seems a bit cliche.

So I decided on the following fluff:

The XI Legions Primarch ('The Lost Primarch') was never found during the Emperors conquest of the Galaxy, but he landed in an advanced war-like society and rose to prominence. Prone to visions and using his extensive technological skill, he designed primitive Power Armour suits and genetically engineered his own warriors (The Custodes/precursors to the Space Marines).

After the Horus Heresy, a Chaos warband attacked his home world but were repulsed. Peaking his interest, the Lost Primarch copied the gene-seed and power armour structures of the Chaos-tainted Space Marines and built his own Legion. Dissent sprung up in his government and civil war broke out. After several years he triumphed with the backing of his awe inspiring warriors. His Legion, now numbering over ten thousand warriors, prepare to descend on an Imperium and take the place of the fallen Emperor.

--- What I need help doing is coming up with a plausible reason/excuse why it has taken him so long to build up his power. 10,000 years is a long time. Long enough to build whatever army he needed so there has to be some sort of time-loop/fracture making the procession of time stretched (1 year = 500 years or something like that) ---

If someone could help me explain it i would be most appreciated.

Constructive Criticism is also welcomed gladly :P

(If this is in the wrong place feel free to remove it, Mods. I'm only new here so I'm not sure where this should be posted.)

Thing is, it's consistently stated that all twenty Primarchs were found by the Emperor and united with their Legions.

There are certainly credible ways of having a "missing Primarch" disappear from the Imperium only to return for domination later, though. That having been said, consider that it took the Emperor decades, if not centuries, to complete his Primarch project... and without it, he could not have created the Space Marines. Same thing with power armour, bolters, etc. Unless the missing Primarch landed on a technologically advanced world, it's kind of a stretch for him to single-handedly match humanity's achievements.

I know it is a long stretch that the lost Primarch could've built his own Power Armour which is why I had the part about a Chaos Space Marine warband attacking the planet, being defeated and the Primarch copied the Power Armour of those left on the dead corpses.

What I am finding hard, is fitting it into the time frame and if I should build it from SM or CSM or a combination of both.

The issue I have is that your primarch was never found. The lore has all 20 primarchs being found. In the Horus Heresy books it implied that they were later excommunicated/killed by order of the emperor and it was forbidden to mention them. It's strongly implied that Russ and the Space Wolves dealt with one of these missing legions.

I think you need to work around this bit of existing lore.

The coolest thing I've heard about a missing primarch is that 1 of them is actually Sigmar from the fantasy game, and that it is based on a planet within the eye of terror. I like this, but it's just a theory, not actually 40k cannon. However, if a modern chaos space marine war band struck this planet, it would fit nicely into your background story.

What if a Warband was whipped back in time, landed on one of the 2's world before the Emperor found him. Got their back end handed to them by the Primarch, who then reverse-engineers their equipment to some degree just in time to meet the Big E. E recognizes the taint of Chaos in him, and kills him on the spot and turns over his Terran Legions over to Guilleman to watch over.

AWESOME!

Here's an idea that hasn't been done (I think).

What if the Primarch landed on a hyper-tech world? The scientists of this world examined this young specimen of genetic-superiority for the benefit of their world. Of course, like the other Primarchs, he eventually attained the status of ruler - or Scientist-King - over these people. The people of this world may have used a form of cloning for their military. As the Primarch grew, he adapted what was learned from his genetic makeup and applied in his own research.

Then along comes the Emperor, happy to find another lost son. The Primarch is reunited with his Legion. He is unhappy with the Astartes - and the Emperor's - way of creating space marines. This Primarch can do it better (or at least thinks he can). Such hubris and conceit of being as good as his Father the Emperor cannot be overlooked. Add in the Primarch has his own ideas of how humanity should be guided.

Horror of horrors, what if the Primarch felt the Galaxy could only be brought to peace through cooperation and understanding??

Bye bye Primarch.

Now, imagine someone as intelligent as this Primarch having a failsafe in case his Daddy didn't agree. A clone of himself and possible a Legion of cloned troopers could have been awokened by accident long after they should have been activated.

Now this new/old purged legion is back to resettle the score.
