number6
At the tournament I run every year, the GKs have once again proven triumphant. In fact, winning every single available objective in every single mission of all five games. Same player as well, though with a new army taking advantage of allies. FYI, here's the army list. spartan249
MSU is far from dead... Mech is the thing that people have been crying foul about. Man... something smells fishy about the results here. That list is hiding some huge secret somewhere, cause it sure doesn't look much stronger then what I face on a weekly basis (weaker in fact then some of my more ruthless sparring opponents). Oh well, them's the wraps, I suppose. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263942-gks-win-gentlemens-gt-at-rock-con/#findComment-3215536 Share on other sites
DAwarrior43
I was there and Tim the guy who won rolled pretty well and handled target priority very well. So while the list may not look overwhelming on paper it is definitely a heck of a lot of fire power. KGatch113
What was the overall tournament field like? If everyone brought space marines, then yeah, a list like this wins. Capt. Tates
I thought you were only allowed one 'special' For every troop choice taken with allies. He has 1 HQ, 1 troops, 1 elite and 1 heavy. Surely this is an illegal list? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263942-gks-win-gentlemens-gt-at-rock-con/#findComment-3215679 Share on other sites
Reclusiarch Darius
Nope. Read the rulebook. You have to take an Allied HQ and one Troops. You get one Elites, one additional Troops, one FA and one Heavy as additional selections. There was actually a lot of xenos there. The most common army was main army was daemons. One guy was running the 3x9 flamers and 3x9 screamers. number6
Necrons were also common, both as a primary detachment and as an allied detachment. Full results and army breakdowns are in the topic I linked to in the OP. number6
20 people was after the second day cut or was it all people that played each day ? Unfortunately, that was the total for the entire tournament. ;) (Fortunately, all played both days.) I honestly have no idea why we didn't sell out like we did the previous two incarnations of the tournament. A total of 8 people dropped in the last week, 3 just last Friday, the day before we started. May be the paint requirement + new edition kept the turnout low... Sigh. Next year, a return to full, I hope! I'm thinking -- seriously -- of offering tea and crumpets throughout.... ;) @Payce: What about Marbo? ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263942-gks-win-gentlemens-gt-at-rock-con/#findComment-3216248 Share on other sites
Payce
@Payce: What about Marbo? My thumb is obviously not on the pulse of SOMETHING here... all I can see is a 65 points demo charge, I'm clearly missing something. Or is the disrution he presents actually worthwhile for GK's IG allies? Or is the disrution he presents actually worthwhile for GK's IG allies? I like disruption units quite a bit. I think Marbo is worth the investment. 65 pts to cause trouble mid-game ... not bad ... not bad. He doesn't have to be awesome or "earn his points back" (a metric I don't subscribe to, anyway). He just needs to cause trouble. Honestly, I like him better than any of our assassins. Yeah, I can definitely see that - completely agree on both the matter of "earning points" as well as the assassins issue. Cheers for clearing it up though, I might have to consider something similar for my Iron Warriors now... ;) Was just so surprised to see something competitive where he actually saw use, it's kind of refreshing :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263942-gks-win-gentlemens-gt-at-rock-con/#findComment-3216283 Share on other sites
spartan249
Are you kidding, payce? Marbo is second only to lone wolves, and that's by a tiny margin. I'm more surprised when he's not in a competitive list. CitadelArmyGuy
A list is only a portion of how Tournament winners take home the big prize. All players are not created equal. I strongly believe that the best players will consistently win, no matter what list they're running (within reason of course). Often players who take 3x9 Flamers & Screamers are playing a metagame to shore up their own shortcomings as a player by attempting to cheese out their list. spartan249
True to an extent. Player skill is definitely important in 40k, but I really think it plays a lesser part in this game then, say, chess or other wargames like the old battletech before clans showed up. Inherent imbalance between each set of playing pieces magnify the importance of composition far more then it should, which is what I think makes competitive 40k a bit of a joke. If we had a simpler and much more balanced ruleset, the game itself may grow less fun, but serve as a much better showcase of tactical and strategic acumen. The redeeming factor of 40k is the way it is sparks the imagination and has a high level of immersion-- something lost in chess or other traditionally balanced games. Perhaps its best to just continue on restating the famous "40k is a battle game, not a battle simulation."
