Stormravens

I just wanna say I love my Stormraven(s) and I love to use it as assault-transport/gunship to bring in my palas and puris and support them afterwards. The SR is a very effective unit if you know how to use it so it simply comes down to personal preference whether or not you take one.

Okay, so I guess we're all pretty much agreed Ravens are usable (not in every matchup but many). Lets talk cargo. Here are the units I currently am thinking of;

5 x Death-Cult w/power sword+power axe, 5 x Crusaders w/power axe+storm shield

+

Tech-Marine w/stave, rad, blind, psycho, meltabombs

(300 points)

or

Flame Knight w/halberd, Purifier w/hammer, 4 x Purifiers w/halberds, 4 x Purifiers w/psycannons

(295 points)

or

Paladin w/Bro Banner, 2 x Paladins w/halberd+psycannon, 2 x Paladins w/hammers

(340 points)

Any other ones people use the Raven for?

Henchmen are best IMO. Powerful enough to wipe out just about anything they charge, but cheap enough that you don't miss them if they're neutralized by a crash and burn. Anything else takes too much out of the rest of the army and has basically no protection from the possible crash and burn.

I don't like Henchman in the Stormraven but thats mainly for fluff-reasons. Can't imagine that our most elaborate transport-vehicle is used for bloodthirsty furies and their shiny bodyguards instead of my Paladins or Purifiers.

Regarding the risks of crashing - the odds for a single quad-gun to taking a Stormraven down in the turn it comes in is extremely low (with BS4 it's 8,88% with jinx to be exact). If it is clear that your opponent has SERIOUS AA firepower on the table you can still use 'Shadow Skies' to drop off your units in the flightpath of your SR which gets you an additional shooting-phase with this unit. Just make sure you stay away from impassable terrain! After getting used to that option I see no reason why I shouldn't transport Paladins or Purifiers.

edit: typos

I've been wondering about the shadowskies rule for a good time, could someone explain to this confused knight how exactly does the rule work?

Via the new FAQ: "If the Stormraven has moved more than 6", Passengers can still Disembark, but they must do so as follows..." From what I understand therefore, the Stormraven can activate Shadowskies in either Hover or Zoom, provided it moves more than 6". At that point during the movement phase you basically place the disembarking models along the path the Stormraven has moved, as if they were Deepstriking. From there it's just a matter of following the Deepstrike rules with the caveat that if the unit scatters then it takes Dangerous Terrain tests.

'Shadow Skies' allows you to disembark even if you have moved more than 6". The awesome part can be found in one of the newest FAQs where it clarifies that you CAN use special rules like 'Blood Skies' and 'Shadow Skies' in a flyer even when the flyer gets a locked velocity result. That means we can use in to disembark from a flyer at any time. The process is quite easy - if you wanne use the special rule you can decide to drop the embarked units at any point on your line of movement. They have to test for dangerous terrain if they scattter even the tiniest bit (not a big problem as armour saves can be made) and if even one of your units has to land in inpassable terrain the whole unit is destroyed. Just make sure you position them far away from any of those and you are safe

edith says I'm too slow :\
