Heresy Era True-scale Imperial Fists

It’s about time I started this log now. I’ve been toying around with the idea of a pre heresy army for years but never really nailed down which Legion I’d want to playas, a whole bunch of them have different aspects I really like and would enjoy playing up to. This indecision has had me paint the odd Thousand son here, a Dark Angel there, but never really get anything going as far as an actual army is concerned.

Well, it’s time for that to change. I’ve settled on a legion I’ve had a soft spot for for years. The Sons of Dorn, the glorious 7th Legion, The Emperor’s Praetorians, The Imperial Fists! I don’t really know why. I couldn’t put my finger on what part of their ethos, or aesthetic really makes me click with them, maybe it’s just some left over memory from way back in the 90’s when I got my hands on a copy of Harlequin and was first introduced to the character of Lexandro D’Arquebus.

Either way, I’ve gone yellow, and now there’s no going back. The second Imperial Fists Expansion seemed like a great opportunity to try and get some models actually assembled and painted!

I had originally planned to make the list themed around the Battle of Phall, or one of the other numerous boarding actions the Fists undertook during the Heresy, but have finally decided to abandon the theme. It’s just proving too limiting as it precludes too many of the cool new toys FW have promised with the release of Betrayal, so now I’m hoping for a straight up the line, siege themed Fists list representing Sigismund’s veterans in the first company.

All the models will be built ‘true-scale’ making use of a mix of forge world parts and plastic terminator components to give added bulk and gravitas to the Adeptus Custardes.

Since it doesn’t seem right to start a mini-blog without at least one photo, I’ve snapped a couple of photos of the first 6 bases assembled for the army. These are meant to look like a ruined city scape (not necessarily Terra itself though) and will wind up having half of a Breacher siege squad and a Siege themed contemptor dreadnought (think a bigger, more potato like ironclad) stood upon them later in the week.

thanks guys. Managed to grab and hour and a half of hobby time last night to begin work on turning 5 sets of termiantor legs into true scale pwoer armour (I'm going for a generic power armour look for the legs rather than trying to exactly replicating the look of Mk III armour (which wilf orm the torso head and arms). I got the legs chopped down and the back of the greaves filled in.

I'll try and get some pics up later

Cheers

No progress with the fists model wise yesterday, but here’s a shoddy pic of the work done to the terminator legs the night before. The piping on the thighs and the armour at the hips have been cut away and I’ve begun filling in the back of the greaves to look more like traditional power armour.

I did manage to get a game with the betrayal list last night against Jon using the Tempus Fugitives Adeptus Mechanicus list (so a new experience for both of us). We played 1750 points and I tried to include a few things I couldn’t normally take in games of 40K. My list looked briefly like:

-Praetor with master crafted Paragon Blade and Digi lasers. I was using hi to represent Sigismund himself.

-9 Cataphractii terminators

-Caestus Assault Ram (that all of the above piled into)

-20 man tac squad

-10 man breacher squad

-contemptor dread with 2 CCW and a havok launcher

-Rapier Laser Destroyer array

From the experience I learned:

-in 1750, 9 termis and Sigismund were overkill, especially when delivered out of a flyer

-Whilst the Ramming things with the Caestus was crazy fun (It can rack up a lot of 3” movements before hitting to get some ludicrous strength ram hits) it was probably not the best choice. I had taken it over the cheaper Spartan to give me some anti air ability, but all of it’s weapons are blast so could not be used against flyers, and it isn’t on the board from turn 1. The Spartan could also have complimented my tac squad. Plus, the magna melta is just too inaccurate compared with a normal anti tank weapon for my liking

-20 Tac marines are hard to shift, and put out a withering hail of anti infantry fire, but the total lack of special or heavy weapons makes themvery susceptible to vehicles. Particularly walkers which can then mess them up in combat once they arrive. I’m thinking 2 or 3 rapiers set up right along side them in support/defence of the tac squad from now on.

-I’m still not really sure what to do with Breacher squads, but Graviton guns are awesome. They may not be fantastic at actually killing infantry, but the haywire ability is great. As a defensive weapon, being able to lay down fields of dangerous and difficult ground is invaluable at shielding you from assaults.

-The Betrayal List is very, very fun to use!

Another quick update from last night. I sculpted the thighs in on all the legs, but they don’t look particularly noteworthy at the moment so no pics of them.

I did start assembling my contemptor dread. I wanted to recreate the pose of the FW boarding marine so also had to create a dread sized boarding shield.

My concern is at the moment there is no bow or curve in the shield along the long axis as there is in the FW boarding shields. I’ve tried heating the shield up to bend them, but the plastic at the bottom is over 1cm thick. I think I’d need to boil it to get the plastic hot enough to bend now and am not sure what that will do to the plasticard, glues and brass etch.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hey dude, liking this project!!!! As for the boarding shield, I reacon it looks aces how it is and wouldn't risk damaging the other parts. If your super keen on it, I'd recommend rubber-banding it to a object with an appropriate curve and submerging it in boiling water.

As for the thighs on your marines, leave the pipeing, this will make placing and shaping the GS much easier, and will help you to get a consistant thickness all around.

Cheers,

Jono

Holy crap - a Boarding Contemptor. That right there is distilled awesomesauce. :cuss

I would worry less about the lack of curvature (don't worry about it) and more about mounting it on the Contemptor, really. If you can pull that off, the fact the shield is flat will not matter one jot, imo. The amount of awesome would simply outweigh the issue. I doubt people will notice, honestly. :D

thanks for the kind words and suggestions guys. Regrettably I already tried bending the shield by applying heat which just resulted in the plasticard section deforming and melting! I've patched it quickly and added some more brass etch banding and rivets so it loks okay again. A friend is going to help me make some resin casts of it on Tuesday (at which point I can try to bend the resin pre-curing to get a bit of curvature). If that doesn't work I still have the original to mount. If it does work, I can knock out 3 shields and make a boarding contemptor talon!

I hadn't thought of that. Certanly the piping ont he back of the greaves is useful for acting as a pseudo armateur. Thanks, I'll give it a go on the next half of the squad (although the thigh armour, the correct name of which escapes me, will still neep to be lopped off!).

Last night I stole 10 mins of hobby time to sculpt the ribbed joints back into the legs so they are now ready to start having the bulked up Mk III bodies adding and start posing the marines.

this will have to wait fr next week thoguh as I am heading down to London tomorrow to be in town to catch the only NFL game played in the UK each year on Sunday.

hopefully there'll be some pics that are starting to resemble and actual space marine appearing at the start of next week.

cheers

Dan

Love that dread bro. Fantabulous work. Don't often come in here (spend most of my time in wip) so I've managed (much to my detriment) to miss your stuff up until now! However now that i've found you, you will find me a regularly visitor here ;) keep up the sterling work mate.

thanks brothers!

The weekend in London (and the 18 days of work with no break which preceeded it) took more out of me than I thought but I've still managed to grab some hobby time this week. Ultimatley, I decided I wasn't happy with the shield the way it was. It looked too much like a cop out to take some of the cities of death kit instead of manning up and scracth building one. So like any true son of Dorn I got my gear out and begun fashioning some siege equipment. I'm much happier with the scratchbuilt shield as it ore closely mirrors the FW marine sized ones and I was able to get a nice gentle curve to it.

Here it is attached to the finished boarding contemport (who will count as an iron clad dread in non heresy rules games)

and a close up of the shield. In the end I opted not to sculpt any battle damage or bolter impacts etc into the shield istelf and will instead paint these on to the same level as the rest of the weathering on the mini

Now to add some studs to the siege squads legs and finally get on with assembling their torsos!

Cheers
