Dark Vengeance Chaos Force - BLACK LEGION

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Some of you may recognize me as a Dark Angels fanatic as I have an active plog of the Sons of the Lion but after painting all DA miniatures from Dark Vengeance set I decided to try sth different. I decided to start a Chaos oriented project.

At this point I don’t know where it will lead me but for now I plan to paint all chaos marines from dark vengeance (except cultists) as BLACK LEGION and add to them new plastic aspiring champion. Perhaps I will expand the force with new raptors/some vehicles or maybe I will end up with selling them on ebay. We will see.

I have spent almost a week painting two first miniatures: Kranon (my Chaos Lord) and Draznicht (Chosen). Effect is below:

Hope you like them. It was a hard work and a lot yet to do with the rest of the Chosen (not to mention the Helbrute as I plan to convert him a little…)

Stay tuned for more,

Cheers

Thank you guys, I am glad that you like them.

As for the bases it is very simple:

I glue some cork and gravel to the bases - when glue is dry I fill them with some sand and that's it. I basecoat them with black paint (sand with brown) and then drybrush cork with grey paint, sand with desert yellow / bleached bone and skull white.

Hope it helps ;)

Thanks! What thickness of cork do you use?

Also I notice you didn't go for a glow effect on the coils of Kranon's plasma pistol - that's very unusual, and it looks great. Makes more sense for them to be a metallic colour, if they're electromagnetic coils.

Yes, I sold all the cultists and I really do not plan to paint any of them

Cork thickness is about 3 mm. See picture below:

some of you asked so I also took a picture of all my basing materials:

...and to finish this post some pictures of chaos and dark angels together :D :

Thanks for all the basing info, I'll have to give it a shot myself. (you know, if you ever had the time or inclination, I reckon you could make one of the most popular basing tutorials out there...)

Your DA look fantastic as well, just checked out your thread for them. Top-notch work!

Hi guys,

it took me some time but I finished two more chosen. I do not have as much free time lately so my painting pace is really slooooow now. Either way here they are:

Some of you asked me for a tutorial of how I make my bases so I here it is:

HOW TO MAKE ROCKY BASES

Below you can see materials I used for a first step - I glued (using PVA glue) some cork to the bases and some gravel:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x240/bevulf/01baseswithcorkandgravel.jpg

you need to leave it at this point until the glue is dry - I always leave it for aprox. 12-14 hours before I go to the next step which is sanding:

When the glue dries (another 12 hours) I undercoat the bases as follows:

Chaos Black - for cork

Scorched Brown - for the rest

for the next step - drybrush cork with Astronomicon Grey, sand and gravel with Bestial Brown:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x240/bevulf/04firstlayer.jpg

Next drybrush only the sand and gravel with Desert Yellow, followed by Dheneb Stone:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x240/bevulf/05secondlayer.jpg

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x240/bevulf/06thirdlayer.jpg

Drybrush sand and gravel with Bleached Bone:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x240/bevulf/07forthlayer.jpg

The Last drybrush is done with Skull White - drybrush all cork, sand and gravel:

To finish the bases paint rims with Scorched Brown:

and that's it :jaw:

Hope some of you find it interesting...

Thank you guys.

@Alphz - glad you like it. Unfotunately making a tuto of the cloak would be complicated as it was a long painting process.

I will give you colours and some hints on how I painted it:

- Basically it was painted using several colours - basecoat of Hawk Turquise followed by few layers of base colours highlighted with skull white.

- After the highlights were done I focused on shading - this time I used base colour mixed with some chaos black (just a DOT in each progressive layer) and I glazed it onto the most shadowed areas of the cloak (very time consuming).

- I also applied some dilluted dark angels green mixed with dilluted hawk turquise as a wash on some parts of the cloak - I didn't apply it on all the surface just in some areas to give the reflection of colour changing.

- Final highlights were done with pure skull white on the very edges

hope it helps :)

I have also finished the rest of the Chosen:

Kranon (ehm, I mean Black Legion Lord) with his warband:

and now slowly and painfully onto the Helbrute...

Those mini's look so lush brother, the aquamarine cloaks are just perfect, I've been trying to work with aquamarine for eldar for ages and never got it quite that tone, or as good blending, and it's nice to see clean crisp bright colours on chaos, it really works!
