Battleforce Question + Introduction

Hi all

DA player here (don't shoot me!). I'm pretty much sorted for 1750 points and leaving the rest till the codex is out. In the meantime I'm going to start SW as they're my first love. I remember reading in a White Dwarf a long time ago about the progression of an aspirant which totally gripped me. I think the battleforce looks nice as scouts are more of an option with wolves (at least they look like it to me) and there's a nice drop pod there too! I was just wondering:

1 - Are the Blood Claws ONLY Blood Claws or can I make them into more Grey Hunters? I have some bolter arms from a DA conversion kit (unless Russ would kill me for doing that!)

2 - Is the Space Wolf Omnibus a good place for fluff? Fluff drives me in my hobby, a reason the Space Wolves attract me.

3 - Can I play DA and SW together as allies? If so, will it work as they are "Allies of Convenience"?

You can model them as GH or BC. If you start with this box I would do 20 GH.

I liked the omnibus. It gives you a lot of fluff.

You can ally DA and SW but they are indeed Allies of Convenience. Hammer DW comes to mind since the WG termis with hammers are very pricy.

The SW battleforce comes with "space wolves". Not Blood Claws or Grey Hunters, but options for either, or any PA-equipped model you can imagine for a SW army (short of heavy weapons and meltas). So if you want them to be Grey Hunters (undoubtedly everyone's advise), then by all means.

The Omnibus has lots of fluff, some good, some bad, some conflicting, but it's allll Wolf. Of particular fondness for me was the initial stages prior to becoming a Claw.

Additionally, I highly recommend Battle of the Fang. Gives a more gritty and "grim-dark" rendition of the Wolves (and will clue you in to why some people refer to them as Vlka Fenryka).

I think in the grand scheme of things, anything can work if you tweak it for a specific purpose. This should be the same with allies of convenience. IMO, Wolves compliment any force, simply because they're better.

Absolutely. THe Long Fangs are one of the SW strengths & although in a lot of lists you only see a 5 strong pack with 4 ML, Wolves can have 5, so why not take advantage of that. I know some times it's about pts for something else but IMO, max your heavy weapons whenever possible. I currrently run 3ML & 2 LC so I can deal with any threat on the table but that's because I have the whole range of oppponents & lively gaming club & we usually just show up at the store & play who ever is there. As Wulfebane said, they are Space Wolves in the BF set. Make BC's,GH's,LF's(if you have the HW's) or WG. Whatever you like. Enjoy.
I was wondering of buying some ML (5 to be exact) and redoing 5 of the marines in the battleforce into a long fangs pack. I think that would work nicely with the DW and RW, best of both. Does that sound sensible?

It's deffo a good idea - gives you 14 Claws/Hunters, 5 (6 inc. pack leader) and those scouts :D nice midfield/long range force to complement the manouverability of a DW/RW force :P

that would work really well.

you could use the battleforce to make

1 x wolflord/wolfguard battle leader

1 x rune priest/wolf priest (use wolf helm and scratch build staff or crozius)

6 x longfangs (5 x ml, 1 x pack leader to split fire, take hits)

12 x grey hunters (split into packs between 5 and 9 )

5 x scouts

this gives you a playable force with 2 HQs 1 heavy support 2 troops and 1 elite

for fluff go with all the above but i think prospero burns, thousand sons and battle for the fang to get a feel for the direction the wolves are going at the moment.

just my two cents worth and welcome to the fang

There is a link to the buying guide that I posted up in the 2.0 FAQ sticky above.

First and foremost, the SW Omnibus will give you a somewhat Disney channel version of the SW. To see the roots of the SW, read the Horus Heresy novels of A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns. Then read Battle of the Fang for a version of the Wolves, 1000 years after the Heresy.

As far as the battleforce goes, it is the opinion of some that the SW pack boxes built alone are just too "wolfy". I and others have diluted the SW packs by mix and matching SW packs with Tactical Space Marine Squads. This allows for a less "wolfed" out squads as well as missile launcher and melta bits being made available. So how would that work out with a battleforce?

Battleforce + Space Marine Tactical Squads x2:

HQ:

Lord/WGBL: kit bashed from SW packs

Elite:

Wolf Scouts: kit bashed from Battleforce and SW bits

Wolf Guard: kit bashed from SW pack/SM squad

Troops:

GH x10 w/plasmagun x2: kit bashed SW pack and SM squad

GH x10 w/plasmagun x2: kit bashed SW pack and SM squad

GH x10 w/meltagun x2: kit bashed SW pack and SM squad

Heavy:

Long Fangs: you will have the bodies to make a Long Fang pack and already have 2 missile launchers towards your goal of 5.

Thanks guys, that's a lot of help and I can't wait to get my teeth into them! (Sorry, couldn't resist) I've downloaded BotF as the other books you mentioned are on my Christmas list and I don't want to risk duplicates.

I'm definitely going to make a wolf lord, wolf priest/rune priest, long fangs and one unit of grey hunters. I'm going to save the rest of the models until I get a tactical squad to do what Brother Ramses suggests.

Stay tuned for pictures as I assemble them. For the Wolftime! For Russ!

Last question: wolf priest or rune priest?

I must thank everyone here, as Ive recently fallen prey and felt the powerful pull of the Wolves. (Funnily enough, I'm a DA player as well, Deathwing-style) This thread has helped me figure out a good way to start a Wolf army. So much thanks!
