New GK Player - henchmen questions

Good day,

I'm a new GK player, and have a few questions regarding henchmen:

-Are DCA's allowed to wield a power sword + power axe, officially or condoned at least (on non-GW tournaments for example)?

-What is the best power weapon to equip Crusaders with? Would that be a Power Axe always?

DCA are allowed to equip anything thats in the category of power weapons.

- Sword

- Axe

- Maul

- Spear

So yes, a sword and axe would be really nice.

Best power weapon for Crusader is really up to your playstyle and the synergy of your army.

If they are intended to fight 2+ guys, then of course the axe is the better. If you have other units dealing with 2+, a power weapon is enough. But since they are I3, they will usually strike "last", as the most common foe is Space marines.

I'd actually put power mauls on them. S5 from the mauls makes it much more likely that you put wounds through, and crusaders need all the help they can get with that.

Also, I'd put a power lance and power Axe on DCA. Lances have superior stats on the charge, and you either mulch the unit on the charge or die with DCA.

Unit entry says 'two power weapons'. GW have stated multiple times that if it says generic power weapon, you can model and equip the unit however you like (whichever you pick has to modelled properly however).

Power sword+power axe is the best combo for DCA. Sword lets you go at Initiative and ignore power armour, power axe is for suicide trades with enemy Terminators (their mass powerfist deletes you, but your mass power axe deletes them back).

Power axe. Ignoring TDA is clutch in this game (6th edition is Terminator edition), and +1 Strength is nice. They have terrible I3 anyway, so its no real loss to go to I1. They only have 1A normally, so you need to make it count.

Power spears are terrible. AP4 = irrelevant, and its not guaranteed you'll get the charge anyhow (Raven can always get shot down). The +1 Strength can be obtained from the attached Tech-Marine ('Hammerhand' and rad grenades with DCA is just brutal), who you wanna bring anyway due to Ld8 and ATSKNF (not to mention he brings servo-arms and meltabombs for blowing up Dreadnoughts in melee, and a stave for challenges).

Power mauls are a complete joke. Most people are taking powerfist or (for Templars) twin-lightning claw Chaplains for this exact reason.

I have left all my DCAs with Power Swords, but changed my Crusaders to Power Axes.

I run 6 DCAs and 2 Crusaders in a squad, and whilst my main aim is to now hunt PA squads, I still try my luck against 5 man TDA squads. The reason being is simple;

Terminators die to shear weight of saves just like anything else.

6 DCAs churn out 24 attacks on the charge. At I5. 3s to hit, 4s to wound. On bad rolls I still put 5 wounds on them, on good ones, 10+. If I can take out 2 of a 5 man unit, my Crusaders stand a pretty good chance of taking another 1. My foe lose combat invariable as I take their attacks on my Crusaders and use the Storm Shields to stay alive. I sweeping advance the terminators :)

Are there cheap ways to get around 20 power axes for DCA's/Crusaders? Most bit sites sell 'em for 1 pound a piece or more, that's abit too much if you ask me. Same for the Forgeworld chain axes, so I was thinking I'd go with Fantasy axes perhaps, although that doesnt do my henchmen models justice imo.

I used Warrior of Chaos - http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/...dId=prod1040516

Cut the head out, put a terminator head in its place, sand off the chaos markings and they look pretty reasonable.

For the finishing touch, put the inquisition symbol on the shield (painted or buy the brass ones from forgeworld)

I'm actually in need of some idea's for Crusader conversions. I tried out with Bretonnian Men-At-War and Chaos Warriors, fitting em with custom heads and such but I don't like neither. I'm really looking for knights that have that "space" feeling, just like the GW Crusaders have (shame they didn't make a box out of it with more stances/torsos). Does anyone have any good ideas for custom Crsuaders? Preferably GW miniatures and can be outside the GW range as well.

How about the dark angel upgrade set?

Used the robed bodies / heads. Just need to find a nice Storm Shield.

(They're down on the GW site atm, so here's a link to the box from Wayland)

The thing is though, you lose nothing by taking an axe for the second weapon. Neither are specialist weapons, so you get the +1A regardless. Might as well have AP2 handy for when you need to kill Stormhammers (3++ breaks more easily than 2+ ever will).

  • 2 weeks later...

So I've nearly finished modelling + painting my first 10 DCA's (based on DA Wyches), but I 've hit a brick wall reagrding Crusader models. I've spent countless hours googling, looking up threads to get some conversion ideas, but I don't like a single one of them (Bretonnian, Chaos, etc.). The GW models would have been perfect if they came in a kit to make different poses etc. I want to make/buy a model that closely resembles the GW model, but something I can convert well and isn't as expensive.

Anyone with a brilliant suggestion? :D

You can use cheap stuff to get the effect you want. Something to consider:

- get cheap storm shields off eBay bits store

- get cheap axe bits off eBay bits store

- get an IG Infantry Squad box

That should be a good starting point. It'll require a fair amount of work to get the posing right, but you should be able to get one hand thrusting the shield forwards, the other one holding the axe. From there, you can make further decisions about wargear, helmets, capes etc.

This is how I´m doing it - Still only finished this first one, but has 10 planned:
