Ignominious Defeat!

My first 6E game at my new (to me) LGS.

Take and Hold Spearpoint, using those random point objective thingies. Turns out the majority of the good points are nearer to me. He deployed in the Northwest behind an Aegis defense line, me in the Southeast in a little valley. Lots of forest and a few hills. That's about all I remember coherently...

First mistake: he and I both read over my list and neither of us caught that only one of my three units of Grey hunters were supposed to deploy in a Rhino. More about this later.

Turn 1, he deep strikes a squad of 5 TDA right into the middle of my deployment zone.

Second mistake: I ignored my gut instinct.

Instinct said "Turn around and unload everything we have at those unwelcome gatecrashers until there's nothing left but random particles."

Intellect said, "Continue forward toward the objectives we intend to hold and let the snipers and Long Fangs deal with that unruly and ungentlemanly lot."

You can pretty much guess how that went from there. For the next two turns, his termies slugged it out with my scouts, Long Fangs and TLas Razorback, pretty much doing whatever he felt like doing until he came into base contact with my senior citizens and made them all take naps. Kudos to my squad leader, who shall be remembered posthumously as Olvar the Stubborn; it took them two turns to lay him low and he hit with everything - he just never wounded anyone.

Meanwhile, GH squad Arvi with Rune Priest had enough of the nose of their Rhino sticking around the corner that they had there ride turned into a bee-autiful crater before anyone could put their foot on the accelerator. The next turn saw squad Roni wreck their ride and squad Jeri managed to blow up right on top of an objective. Both of these last cost Team Wolf a few GH each. The poor wretches never even got to chamber a round...

Soo... I held four objectives - 1 3, 3, and 4 points, respectively - off and on for 5 turns while he sat back behind his line and blew my squads to pieces, continually laying Malediction on my most forward unit (holding the objective in the middle of the board with no cover) while Hagin Sigrbrand the Beastslayer - he who laid out a Penitent Engine single-handedly as a young, 100-point Rune Priest - dithered and dallied and basically did his best to cause me to regret ever writing an epic ode in his honor...

Even as a glorious last stand, this was a miserable fail.

To add insult to injury - you guessed it. They were Sons of the Lion. Darn Unforgiven twerps...

Altogether I had a blast and am already looking forward to tomorrow night with a newly modified list.

Dark Angels fielding Penitent Engines?

The Penitent Engine was from a previous 5E battle. Hagin was an un-named, 100-point Rune Priest and destroyed the Engine without suffering a single wound. So I named him, put him in Runic Armor and gave him Saga of the Beastslayer.

Last night, he was supposed to be deployed in my only Rhino and zoom around beating on T5 baddies. He managed to fire off Jaws once or twice but never came closer than about 12 inches to any enemy models, in part thanks to having his paper-thin Rhino being blown out from under him in Turn 1.

And were your grey hunters supposed to deploy in something other than Rhinos?

My list came in at 1247 points. I had knocked the Rhinos off two of my GH squads in my original list in order to come in under 1250, but when it came to deployment I completely forgot about it and plunked all three Rhinos down on the table.

"Ignominious" - that's a big word for a wolf

I kid. I kid.

I'm actually surprised the DA player would even risk that squad with such a move, dropping them in unsupported. You are right though, you should have went with your gut when they first dropped. Mass small arms fire will take them down and send off a nice chunk of his army in doing so. That game had just started, you had time to get to your objectives.

I'm curious what the rest of his list was?

Please take no offense...but your narrative had me laughing my arse off! Personally I love games like those. I have a particular friend that feels the need to name every new character I plonk down and the result is the character usually lives up to his lowly name, example: hamwallace.

Anyway glad you are enjoying 6th.

I'm curious what the rest of his list was?

Curse you for forcing me to dwell on the past! :whistling:

Think it was two tacs broken into 5-man squads, a dev squad, libby, those five TDAs and an Aegis with quad gun.

Other than a combat squad trying to come at me from either end of the board, his guys sat behind their wall (cowards!) and plinked away at me all night.

Brom:

None taken! My missive was received in the spirit in which it was written.

I'm curious what the rest of his list was?

Curse you for forcing me to dwell on the past! ;)

Haha... We Unforgiven have been dwelling on the past 10K years. ; )

Well, he certainly had a list where sitting back and plinking away at Space wolves is probably a good idea, I suppose.
