hrafnkel
You guise know what? that Ork list I made a few weeks back is really fun. scream HERETIC all you want. haha. Anyhoo, I think this has been a topic of discussion amongst the people in my local group: HOW TO BEAT A MIXTURE OF RAVEN+DEATHWING This is actually a very dangerous list if you ask me, the MSU qualities of the ravenwing mixed in with the sheer staying and dominant power. The list in question roughly has about 2 squads of 5 thunderhammer TDAs and 4 squads of 5 bikes. plus 2 whirlwinds and 1 twinlinked lascan. Inclusive of belial and the prereq landspeeders of course. 2k points. Anyone have any tips? I pretty much eat Deathwing for lunch, Ravenwing not that tougher, but I seem to have a problem with a mixture. Same goes for the rest of the guise in my local group. Brom MKIV
Hard to say what the exact problem is without knowing your list (mech, infantry, hybrid etc). His looks like Ravenwing with support from the DW/GW. Anyway my first and most practiced army is still deathwing/deathraven so I might be able to give you a few pointers. In general elite lists like RW/DW suffer most from weight of fire and bodies on the ground. Dont try and play their game or you'll lose. His list looks pretty far from what I personally would consider competitive but that doesnt mean it isnt strong. Remember his whole army is fearless and doesnt put out much firepower pt for pt (less if taking all th/ss) but it does pack plenty of AT (this list has less it seems) and its good at focusing those shots on one area. His list will also have superior deployment options so be on the defensive, dont get crazy during deployment and remember to support each of your units. RW/DW are bully units by nature. Rapid fire the termies and catch those bikes in combat with anything and they will lose. For choices I wouldnt rely on mech unless its a flyer, to elaborate my double wing army has mopped the floor with BAs max pred/razor spam in a couple turns. It loves kibbles N mech. For specific counters lonewolves and grey hunters are your heavy lifters. Long fangs could be ok too if taking HBs although ultimately its gonna be GHs that will win this thing for you. Just to reiterate RW die like flies in combat which is why you usually see an MSU approach, that and melta/plas spam. Im surprised he isnt running more of those 75 pt typhoons of awesomeness though. Lastly jotww brings great returns if you can get a good line on multiple units. That power always gutted me from multiple RPs but now I get to use it without remorse mwahaha! hrafnkel
Ooo yea sorry about that, I forgot to give you a brief of what my 2k army looks like. Mine is an alpha strike list: 3 drop pods with 8 GH (plasma, mark and standard) + 1 WG TDA (power axe, combi melta) 2 squads of 10 GH (mark, plasma, plasma) 3 LF squads of 5 ML 1 RP. I bring IG allies of 2 Leman Russ Battle Tanks, 1 command squad (1 autocannon), 1 vet squad (1 autocannon). Normally I'm very aggressive with this list, 2 DPs to cover chokepoints in terrain. Against the Deathraven dude I try to box them in and I concentrate on one bike squad at a time. Anyhoo, he does have some landspeeders. I don't have a problem with his outflanking, if he tries that I just concentrate all my forces on one flank and own it. For some reason I have trouble dealing with his TDAs that he deepstrikes with irritating accuracy (srsly hate you guys for having that hahaha). His landspeeders do a number on my forces that are out of cover. Sheer number of shots, twinlinked. Ergh. Thanks in advance dude. Brom MKIV
Ya deathwing assault can be pretty effective especially with scouting bikes. DWA is better now in 6th with the friendlier DS mishap table and better reserve rolls also. It used to be considered a non-bo due to risk and 1/3 DW units in reserve. Anyway.. back on topic, lone wolves are perfect here. He DWAs meaning he is packing th/ss so nominal firepower from those units. Just absorb it then charge with LW and tarpit. Otherwise the mantra of shoot the fighty stuff applies. Also I must say this is a perfect opportunity to send jotww right through both units and possibly some bikes if hes not mindful. Everything from the earlier post still applies especially the support part.
